An Evaluation Of The Endocrine Response To Dystocia In The Primiparous Cow And Calf, Glenda M. Borcher
An Evaluation Of The Endocrine Response To Dystocia In The Primiparous Cow And Calf, Glenda M. Borcher
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Parturition is a very stressful event for both the cow and the calf. Endocrine changes occur which typically enable to calf to make the transition from a uterine to a gaseous environment. These endocrine changes are basic stress responses, necessary for an organism to maintain homeostasis. They include surges in catecholamine and cortisol secretion and changes in T3 secretion in response to temperature changes. It is well established that the stress response, if
prolonged, can become detrimental. Prolonged stress can result in muscle wasting, immune impairment and gastrointestinal ulceration. If parturition is delayed or particularly stressful due to environmental factors …
The Relationship Of Moral Reasoning Level Of Instructors To Their Teaching Style And Adult Student Perception Of The Learning Environment, Nancy Kay Teresa Gifford
The Relationship Of Moral Reasoning Level Of Instructors To Their Teaching Style And Adult Student Perception Of The Learning Environment, Nancy Kay Teresa Gifford
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between instructor moral reasoning level. teaching style. and adult students' perception of the classroom environment. Rest's Defining Issues Test
measured the independent variable, principled level of moral cognitive development. Teaching style was identified as either learner-centered or teacher-centered using Conti' s Principles of Adult Learning Scale.
Student perception of classroom environment was measured by Stern and Walker's Classroom Environment Index (Fonn 971). The possible influence of the demographic variables of (1) gender, 2) age range, and (3) level of education on principled moral reasoning level was explored. The
sample consisted …

Perceived Importance Of Effective Teaching Competencies Used In Secondary Education And A Comparison Of Usage Between General And Vocational Secondary Teachers, Leroy Eldon Sayer
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to identify and rank effective teaching competencies by secondary vocational teachers, general secondary teachers, teacher educators, and State Department of Education supervisors, and to determine if there was a difference in teaching effectiveness between secondary vocational and general secondary teachers as measured in the classroom, utilizing the COKER (Classroom Observations Keyed for Effectiveness Research). An instrument was constructed from a variety of sources, primarily from the University of Toledo competency indicators as noted by Medley, Coker, and Soar (1984). This list of 28 competencies was completed by secondary vocational teachers from selected high schools …

Analysis Of Laboratory Management Competencies In Nebraska Agricultural Education Programs, Neal J. Schlautman, Thomas A. Silletto
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Laboratory learning has long been associated with the educational process. The use of school and community laboratories in which students “learn by doing” is an integral part of agricultural education programs (Sutphin, 1984). Effective scheduling and management of the agricultural mechanics laboratory is a must for carrying out an effective instructional program (Shinn, 1987; Bear & Hoemer, 1986). The ability to manage laboratory learning was rated as a highly important ability for agriculture teachers by first-year agriculture teachers (Barrick and Powell, 1986). Agriculture instructors must be prepared so they possess and practice laboratory management competencies in order to maximize the …

Deterrents To Female Enrollment In Secondary Agricultural Education Programs In Nebraska, Lloyd C. Bell, Susan Fritz
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
“Scientific and professional expertise in the food and agricultural sciences is a national resource critical to the continuing security of this Nation.” This renewable resource, however, is being depleted by an annual employment shortfall of ten percent. Approximately 4000 employment opportunities go unfilled because of too few new college graduates with expertise in agriculture, natural resources, veterinary medicine, and closely aligned fields (Coulter, 1986). Students usually equate a career in agriculture with farming or ranching only, rather than with the science or business of agriculture which leads to a pervasively negative opinion of pursuing a career in agriculture (Orthel, Sorensen, …

National Trends In Programming, Preparation And Staffing Of County Level Cooperative Extension Service Offices As Identified By State Extension Directors, David M. Agnew, Richard Foster
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
A variety of technical, economical, and social changes are rapidly altering the lives of people served by the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). At the same time Extension has been undergoing the difficult task of evaluating its effectiveness in addressing the needs of society. Reorganizing Extension programs to address the changing clientele directly affects the jobs of field-based faculty in the CES. As Extension responds to the Futures Task Force Report (COP, 1987) and moves to issues programming, a high degree of change will be required. “As we approach the year 2000, Extension is caught in the rapids of change” (Geasier, …

Perceptions Of Agribusiness Leaders Toward Agricultural Education In Nebraska, Allen G. Blezek, Roy D. Dillon
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
The need for change today is perhaps no greater than within the ranks of public programs in agricultural education. Technological advancements coupled with the need for even greater economic efficiency not only continues to encourage and force change, but suggests that the pressures for even better educational programs in agriculture will continue until change actually occurs or most importantly is actually perceived to occur. Miller (1983), stated that “other teachers also often perceive our students (agricultural education) as the less talented and our instructional content as less than rigorous.” He further indicated that “our image with legislators is best characterized …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Teachers constantly face the decision of how to design instruction which will best meet the needs of the learner. These decisions include selecting methods and techniques. The selection process requires not only that the teacher be aware of how to use various techniques, but that he/she know which types of students learn best with various techniques, which techniques should be used under various conditions and what levels or types of information can best be learned using various techniques.

According to Naisbett and Aburdene (Reinventing the Corporation, 1985) it will be the management of human resources rather than management of economic resources that will determine-the margin of success for organizations in the future. In addition, the recently (1988) published report from Stanford Research Institute (SRI) International, called "New Seeds for Nebraska," indicated that skilled and adaptable human resources are a major area where action is needed to give Nebraska the competitive advantage in tomorrow's economy. The report encouraged the University of Nebraska to be more proactive in developing the human resource capital available in the state. The Center for …

Much time and effort have gone into the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and the Department of Agricultural Education's strategic planning effort. Coincidentally, the Department had started its own process of strategic planning in the summer of 1987 where it identified the four departmental "thrust" areas.
The IANR process was started in the fall of 1987 by the Vice Chancellor Omtvedt of the Institute and was to be followed by a series of meetings, not only within the Institute, but with town hall meetings around Nebraska, to ensure a broad representation of input regarding future directions of IANR. …

The five year Comprehensive Department Review provides the Department with a special opportunity to do two things -- to look back on accomplishments of the past five years since our last review, and to look ahead toward the goals, the challenges and the opportunities in the years ahead.
The Department of Agricultural Education took bold steps at a staff retreat in Aurora, Nebraska in the summer of 1987, to establish departmental priorities or program "thrusts." Little did we realize at the time that we were taking steps that would soon be followed by all units within the Institute of Agriculture …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
Agriculture and agribusiness are Nebraska's dominant industries. Ninety-six percent (47.1 million acres) of the state's land area is occupied by 55,000 farms and ranches. Over one-half of the states workers depend upon agriculture and business for their livelihood. The average growing season ranges from 170 days in southeast Nebraska to 120 days in the northwest. Underneath Nebraska is stored nearly 2 billion acre-feet of water, and in Nebraska we receive an average of 90 million acre-feed of precipitation yearly.
Approximately 17 million acres are utilized as cropland, of which approximately 8 million are irrigated. Corn, soybeans, winter wheat, and sorghum …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this research was to identify subject matter areas and specific concepts in home economics which senior high school home economics students consider important. Comparisons were first made between students' perceptions and the perceptions of parents, both economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged. In addition, comparisons were made between students' perceptions of subject matter and specific concepts needed and what home economics teachers perceive is emphasized in their teaching. Questionnaires were mailed to home economics teachers in 22 schools from the six class sizes of schools in economically depressed Nebraska counties. The questionnaire was completed by 174 home economics …
Agribusiness Skills Required By Agriculture Students As Perceived By Nebraska Vocational Agriculture Instructors And Agribusiness Managers, David R. Spotanski, Richard M. Foster
Agribusiness Skills Required By Agriculture Students As Perceived By Nebraska Vocational Agriculture Instructors And Agribusiness Managers, David R. Spotanski, Richard M. Foster
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Agribusiness instruction in vocational agriculture programs can help prepare employees for service related job opportunities in agriculture. Many employment opportunities can be found in occupations related to food and fiber production, transportation, processing, packaging, storing, advertising, and distributing. These jobs are numerous and diverse, strengthening the link between farm products and the consumer (Steward, 1987). The need for trained employees in non-farm agricultural occupations has been well documented in the decade of the 1960's (Williams, 1971). Cooper (1985), reported there is a need for continuous expansion and revision of competencies for employment in agriculture/agribusiness occupations. Birkenholz and Stewart (1986), found …

Attitudes Of Nebraska Superintendents, Principals And Vocational Agriculture Instructors Regarding The Delivery Of Adult Education Through Secondary Programs, Michael F. Adelaine, Richard M. Foster
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Rapid changes in agricultural technology, coupled with an increasingly older agricultural population, make adult education in agriculture a must (Drueckhammer & White, 1984). In order to facilitate the process of incorporating adult vocational agriculture education into traditional secondary programs, the individuals most directly involved in organizing, funding, and conducting adult programs need to be encouraged to do so. Viterna (1973) concluded that school administrators were directly responsible for program development. Viterna also found that the same administrators were willing to support young farmer classes in Nebraska. In studying the attitudes of superintendents of comprehensive high schools in Ohio, Miller and …

Farm Credit Competencies Needed And Possessed By Selected Nebraska Young Farmers/Ranchers, Allen G. Blezek, Daniel H. Post
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Agriculture has changed a great deal, particularly during the past five years. Lower prices for commodities and higher production costs, including higher interest rates, have made it necessary for farmers to become better financial managers. "The farm of the future will be treated financially like any other business--it will have to demonstrate profitability before a bank will finance its operations" (Congress of the United States, 1986). The Iowa Department of Agriculture (1985) and others concluded that rapid economic and social change is not a new phenomenon in agriculture. Agriculture has in fact been adjusting to conditions of greater efficiency since …

Cognitive Processes In The Curry Learning Style Framework As Measured By The Learning Style Profile And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Among Non-Majors In College Biology, Claudia Tarver Melear
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Curry's (1983) model of learning style framework with Claxton & Murrell's (1987) adaptations was used to study the profile of the non-major in a college biology course. The purpose of the study was to provide empirically derived data in both a qualitative and quantitative format of the non major (both successful and unsuccessful students) to improve the course. Over 600 students were administered the Learning Style Profile [(LSP) (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Indicator (MBTI) (NASSP) and the Myers-Briggs Type (Consulting Psychologists Press)] to determine the students' learning styles as a predictor for Success in the course. The MBTI …
