Through the story of a mid-career military spouse who builds a business after repeated career disruptions, it examines why many spouses turn to entrepreneurship and what stands in their way. The profile covers the barriers spouses face when starting a business, including access to funding, certifications, and grants, along with the reality that self-employment does not eliminate the military spouse earnings penalty. Unaffordable housing, food insecurity, and mental health challenges are three of the most pressing issues facing many veterans in the United States. Research demonstrates that agricultural initiatives for veterans have the potential to positively impact veterans’ quality of life while also providing an accessible source of income, fresh healthy food, and community engagement. The 2022 National Survey of Military-Affiliated Entrepreneurs provides detailed insights into the experiences and challenges of military spouse entrepreneurs. In this brief, “military spouse” includes spouses/partners of active duty, National Guard, and Reserve servicemembers, as well as spouses/partners of veterans and retirees. However, we acknowledge that the differences between all of these groups are great, and their unique circumstances vary greatly. These findings are based on the data collected from 243 current business owners who self-identify as a military spouse. These challenges include navigating access to capital, overcoming operational hurdles, and seizing growth opportunities. In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9981, which formally desegregated the military in 1948, this brief presents data on some of the contemporary “dualities” in the experience of Black veterans. It highlights both positive and negative aspects of Black and African American service members and veterans who have made significant contributions to the U.S. military throughout history, despite the challenges of segregation, discrimination, and unequal treatment.

Veteran employment continues to be an integral part of many companies' veteran strategy; notwithstanding the fact that 60% of veterans work for small or medium enterprises. That said, helping veteran-owned small businesses succeed in the marketplace is increasingly relevant to the American economy. According to a comprehensive study by the Small Business Administration, there are more than 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses (VOBs), that's 9% of all US businesses, with total annual revenues of more than $1 trillion. This resource is helpful for s general understanding of the veteran entrepreneurship industry.

This research discusses the types of programs available to veterans, and presents a framework for evaluating the performance of veteran entrepreneurship programs. In practice, veteran entrepreneurs should continue taking advantage of available programs and veteran entrepreneurship program directors, and managers should consider reviewing the eight outcomes provided by the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) in the UK. In policy, the VA might continue supporting veteran-owned businesses through its many programs and services, and the SBA might continue offering courses, training, and funding to support veteran entrepreneurs. This study examines the association between entrepreneurship and military service in a combat unit, and leadership positions for Israeli veterans enrolled in a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program. In practice, veterans venturing into entrepreneurship should consider applying the many social skills they attained during their military service. In addition, career advisors should discuss with servicemembers and veterans how their social skills can be applied outside the military. In policy, many of the policy implications can be applied to American veterans, and TAP might offer programs and tools that teach servicemembers interviewing skills, such as maximizing social media platforms. …
