How did France’s refusal to take part in the war on Iraq in 2003 has created the conditions that legitimizes its future military interventions abroad? In this paper, a discourse analysis of the official French Foreign Policy Discourse is done to show why saying no to war in 2003 paradoxically allows France to carry out military interventions in 2015. High unpredictability has emerged as a dimension of early-life adversity that may contribute to a host of deleterious consequences later in life. Early-life unpredictability affects development of limbic and reward circuits in both rodents and humans, with a potential to increase sensitivity to stressors and mood symptoms later in life. Here, we examined the extent to which unpredictability during childhood was associated with changes in mood symptoms (anhedonia and general depression) after two adult life stressors, combat deployment and civilian reintegration, which were assessed ten years apart. We can reconceptualise warfare by contrasting Clausewitz with the modern practice of cognitive warfare, as evidenced by Ukraine’s defence methodologies. The strategic orchestration of ‘infopolitik’ and the sophisticated use of social media can shape narratives and public perception. This article revisits Clausewitz’s tenet of war as a political instrument and juxtaposes it with contemporary conflict’s multidimensional tactics. By scrutinising Ukraine’s digital and psychological warfare tactics, one may question the applicability of Clausewitz’s framework, seeking to understand if these novel dimensions of warfare compel a redefinition or an expansion of his thesis to navigate the complexities of contemporary geopolitical confrontations.

How do military moral injuries affect reintegration? All service members leave the military eventually, but reintegration can be challenging, bringing changes in career, family life, and friendships, potentially prompting a loss of purpose, drive, and connection. This research review examines the experiences of 11 parents of children with disabilities, recruited through military and disability agencies using snowball sampling. The study reveals varying experiences within the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), highlighting military families' resilience and reliance on peer support, and the military mothers' pivotal role in advocacy, often requiring their spouse's presence at IEP meetings for effectiveness. Approximately 1 in 7 veterans are discharged from the military under less than “Honorable” conditions. Veterans with less than “Honorable” discharges experience bias and stigma related to their discharge, which can lead to elevated risk for behavioral and mental health challenges and homelessness. This brief summarizes the different military discharge types, explains how less than “Honorable” discharges can affect veteran health, identifies groups of veterans who are at risk of receiving a less than “Honorable” discharge, and makes policy recommendations for the Department of Defense (DoD), civilian employers, and community healthcare providers.

Research Review: "National Study Of Sleep Health For Student Servicemembers/Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

This IVMF research review examined sleep health in student servicemember/veterans (SSM/Vs) using National College Health Assessment data with 88,178 participants in 2018 and 67,972 in 2019. Through propensity score matching and multivariate analysis, SSM/Vs (n = 2984) reported higher levels of specific sleep issues than peers but fewer days feeling sleepy, suggesting that higher education institutions should train staff to recognize and support SSM/Vs with poor sleep health. Implications for practice, policy, and future research are also addressed in this IVMF research review.

This research review focuses on women veterans who deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) to show if they had a greater likelihood of breast cancer (BC) than other women veterans who did not deploy during that service era. This research review highlights the lower BC risk associated with deployment as well as implications for practice from this study to include recognizing the “healthy soldier/warrior effect” as a potential factor. This IVMF review also provides implications for policy and future research on the topic of women veterans and breast cancer, particularly those who deploy.

In recent years, the U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has observed a growing number of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) veterans seeking healthcare services. In 2018, approximately 139 per 100,000 VHA users had a documented gender identity disorder diagnosis, a significant increase from 32.9 per 100,000 in 2013. Despite this increase, TGD veterans often encounter distrust and face unique barriers when accessing various aspects of VHA care, including health services research.

The workplace commonly operates as a source of chronic stressors, in fact 25% of Americans find their job is the most stressful part of life. Transitioning service members and veterans (TSMVs) face difficulties throughout their reintegration into civilian life, including challenges with employment, poor social connections, and elevated risk for suicide. To take a deeper dive into ways to decrease these challenges, researchers in the current study used randomly controlled trials focused on reducing reintegration difficulties and improving social support for TSMVs through community-based interventions to evaluate their effectiveness. Results revealed that the group receiving the addition of certified sponsors from the Expiration Term of Service Sponsorship Program (ETS-SP), showed the most promise in reducing reintegration difficulties and improving social support for TSMVs. Choosing Sides: Military Behavior In Severely Polarized Democracies, Timothy W. Ford

Why does severe polarization result in military intervention in some cases but not others? I argue that the organizational culture unique to a particular military plays a critical role in influencing behavioral outcomes in severely polarized democracies. When faced with sovereign power disputes that arise as a result of severe polarization, military organizations are most likely to develop new strategies of action from the dominant practices, norms, and ideas of military leaders. Severe polarization presents a unique threat to civil-military relations and provides the type of unsettled social periods in which cultural ideologies express an observable influence on military behavior. …

Examining Access To Decent Work Among Women Veterans: A Psychology Of Working Theory Perspective, Rebecca C. Gaines

The present study investigated predictors of decent work among a sample of women Veterans (N = 354), grounded in the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT). A structural equation model demonstrated that women Veterans’ experiences of marginalization, economic constraints, work volition, and career adaptability all directly predicted their ability to secure decent work, and economic constraints and marginalization experiences indirectly predicted decent work via work volition. Proactive personality was additionally examined as a moderator variable and did not significantly moderate any model paths; however, it was found to be a unique predictor of decent work and work volition, as well …

Colleges are increasingly providing training to their staff and faculty to better understand and support students with military backgrounds. This study, based on four years of program data, examines the outcomes of a specialized training program that aims to enhance cultural competence regarding military matters. The study assesses participants' retention of knowledge, and application of learning on campus, and compares results between in-person and online versions of the training. The findings reveal that both in-person and online participants exhibited increased confidence and improved capacity to support student veterans. Junior officer attrition has increased over the last two decades. The early departure of army officers leaves a dearth of middle- and senior-level leadership, creating risk for future military readiness. West Point leaders theorized that new officers’ poor person–job fit within their specific career fields contributed to attrition. West Point implemented a talent-based system to place new officers into branches that should offer a stronger person–job fit, hoping it would reduce officer attrition.
