Navigating the Future of the Colorado River (Martz Summer Conference, June 8-10)
Competition for scarce Colorado River water resources is nothing new, but the conflicts that prompted the seven basin states to negotiate the 1922 Colorado River Compact have grown considerably fiercer and more complex in recent decades. In 2007, responding to the challenges of increasing demand and sustained drought, the seven basin states and a number of other affected interests agreed to a set of interim guidelines for allocating Colorado River water in the event of shortages. This agreement represents an important evolution in the governance of the Colorado River, suggesting that the many interests in the basin can work together …

The Role Of Environmental Ngos In Chinese Public Policy, Andrew I.E. Ewoh, Melissa Rollins
The Role Of Environmental Ngos In Chinese Public Policy, Andrew I.E. Ewoh, Melissa Rollins
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The emergence of environmental nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in China is increasingly drawing attention from observers interested in Chinese environmental politics. In the 1980s, the Chinese government started introducing environmental laws as well as seeking assistance from international NGOs, and bilateral and multilateral aid organizations. The 1990s witnessed a shift in government's focus on command and control regulation to more progressive citizen participation and market incentive laws. In fact, many ambitious environmental and energy efficiency targets were included in both the 10th and the 11th five-year plans. This analysis examines the role played by the environmental NGOs in Chinese public policy …

Go Farm, Goleta: Urban Agriculture Protection For Eastern Goleta Valley, Eli M. Krispi
Master's Theses
This paper explores two potential land use planning strategies that can be used to preserve and enhance the economic viability of agricultural operations surrounded by suburban development in Santa Barbara County’s Eastern Goleta Valley: buffers between agriculture and other land uses, and agritourism. In the case of buffers, academic literature is examined to determine how effective buffers are at various tasks (filtering runoff, mitigating dust and wind, providing habitat, etc.) and how to construct buffers to maximize their effectiveness. Land use plans and codes from several California jurisdictions are studied to see how buffers are put to use. Academic literature …

Planting Seeds For An Improved Agrifood System? Linking The Aims Of The Alternative Agrifood Movement To Executive Action In The First Two Years Of The Obama Administration, K. Glowa, Sarah Carvill, Costanza Rampini
Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies
This paper uses several case studies to look at the dialogic relationship between the Obama administration and the alternative agrifood movement. We evaluate the case studies based on criteria developed from the agroecology literature and literature on food security, agrarianism, and the alternative agrifood movement as a whole. Additionally we compare the policy tools utilized and the funding levels of each of the cases. Our findings suggest that the Obama administration is committed to tackling issues of food security and promoting the well-being of small- and mid-scale farmers and their local agrifood economies. Deconsolidation of large agribusiness, equitable trade, and …

Best Management Practices (BMPs): What? How? And Why? (May 26)
The Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems (EFD) Program, managed by the Houston Advanced Research Center, works to identify, develop and transfer critical, cost effective, new technologies that can provide policy makers and industry with the ability to develop natural gas reserves in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Funding for the EFD Program is through a grant from the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America, established under the 2005 Energy Act. Within the EFD Program, some projects focus on technologies for developing energy sources in environmentally sensitive areas; others (like the NRLC’s BMP Project) seek ways to reduce the environmental …

Household Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices In Solid Waste Segregation And Recycling: The Case Of Urban Kampala, Margaret Banga
Household Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices In Solid Waste Segregation And Recycling: The Case Of Urban Kampala, Margaret Banga
Zambia Social Science Journal
This article investigates households’ knowledge, attitudes and practices on the separation and recycling of solid waste in Kampala, Uganda. A survey was administered to 500 households randomly sampled from Kampala. The results indicate that, although the public is aware of solid waste separation and recycling practices, it has not participated in such initiatives. The results also indicate that participation in solid waste separation activities depends on the level of awareness of recycling activities in the area, household income, educational level and gender. It is, therefore, argued that increasing accessibility to recycling facilities is the best means of promoting positive attitudes …

Sozialpolitik Nach Dem Verursacherprinzip : Beispiele Der Anwendung Bei Sucht, Gewichtsproblemen, Medikamentenmissbrauch, Arbeitslosigkeit, Prostitution, Isidor Wallimann
Books
Parks And Obesity In Rural And Urban Nebraska, Michaela S. Wolf
Parks And Obesity In Rural And Urban Nebraska, Michaela S. Wolf
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
In order to better understand the role community design plays in obesity rates, this project studies a potential relationship between distance of parks from homes and obesity rates in four Nebraska counties. Park use may contribute to important health benefits, such as reducing risk of obesity by increasing physical activity levels. There are limitations to park use, such as crime rates and facility upkeep that are important to understand so that they might be managed and communities can reap greater benefits from their parks, including better fitness. This study examines park distance from homes as a potential limiting factor to …
