At the Annual Management Meeting of the Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery held on 22 July 1994 industry put forward a proposal that supplementary and non-transferable quota that was "lost" to the fishery when a licence holding non-transferable quota was transferred should be retained by the Fisheries Department and leased back to licence holders on an annual basis. The gray wolf once inhabited a wide variety of habitats throughout most of the northern hemisphere north of 20°N latitude. Because the animal preyed on livestock and competed with humans for wild prey, it was extirpated from much of its range outside of wilderness areas. Environmental awareness in the late 1960s brought for the wolf legal protection, increased research, and favorable media coverage. The species has increased in both Europe and North America, is beginning to reoccupy semiwilderness and agricultural land, and is causing increased damage to livestock. A pack of two to eight adult wolves (Canis lupus arctos) and their pups was observed during ten summers (1986–95) on Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. The author habituated the wolf pack to his presence in the first summer and reinforced the habituation each summer thereafter. The first alpha female produced four to six pups each year between 1986 and 1989. However, her daughter, who succeeded her as the alpha female, produced only one to three pups each year between 1990 and 1992 and in 1994, and apparently did not whelp in 1993 or in 1995. Executive Summary

Two hundred and forty-seven galliform taxa (subspecies, groups, or species) were considered by the Galliform Conservation Assessment workshop. Two extinct taxa were not considered. Of the 247 taxa, 91 (37%) were assigned to one of three categories of threat, based on the Mace-Lande criteria:

Critical, 5 taxa
Endangered, 26 taxa
Vulnerable, 60 taxa
Secure, 145 taxa
Unknown, 11 taxa

Three of the 247 taxa (1%) were recommended for Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) workshops.

Recommendations for future action were made for 168 taxa in the following categories:

Shark Bay was inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 1991 on the basis of its natural values. The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) is the management agency with responsibility for the oversight and development of management plans dealing with both the marine and terrestrial aspects of the World Heritage Area. This Draft plan deals with the management of fish resources in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area which are the responsibility of the Fisheries Department of Western Australia.

The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.
