Multiple Genre Argument

Research in progress for ENGL 1301: Composition I

Faculty Mentor: W. Scott Cheney, Ph.D.

Standard research papers and five-paragraph essays can train students to blend quotations and organize paragraphs, but advanced writing in the disciplines and the workplace requires much more robust and nuanced thinking. To this end, the Multiple Genre Argument (MGA) pushes students into new writing situations where they create fictional genres to supplement traditional research—a challenging and often confusing task. Learning new skills requires becoming more comfortable with encountering this kind of difficulty and uncertainty. In their book Writing Analytically, David Rosenwasser and Jill …

What Is The Potential Of Non-Battery Energy Storage To Increase Grid Resilience?, Andrew Withers Dec 2023

What Is The Potential Of Non-Battery Energy Storage To Increase Grid Resilience?, Andrew Withers

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This paper seeks to evaluate different technologies in energy storage to determine which ones have the most potential to benefit the energy grid. Technologies like pumped hydro, thermal, gravity, hydrogen, and compressed air storage will be evaluated based on overall costs, marginal costs, unique applications, and efficiency. This paper compares the technologies to batteries on the previous criteria. I also provide a discussion on the policy and economic barriers to the further use of non-battery technologies to support grid reliability during the transition to a cleaner grid that is more reliant on variable renewable generators.

Occupant-centric controls (OCC) and operations have emerged as a key concept in shifting the focus from conventional building- (or system-) centric operations to a more occupant-centric approach. Despite the potential of OCC to meet occupants’ demands and bridge buildings’ energy performance gap, its implementation in real-world settings has been limited. In addition, there is a lack of standardization in methodologies and terms to facilitate meaningful comparisons among case studies. Therefore, this paper aims to present a repository of OCC case studies, offering a platform for standardization and presenting key information about practical implementations of these strategies in real-world scenarios. To …
