Looking To The Future ... Distance Education Issues In Nebraska, Nn21 Distance Education/Outreach Action Team
Nebraska Network 21: Publications
The Nebraska Network 21 (NN21) Action Team on Distance Education/Outreach has studied a variety of issues related to distance education in order to better serve the people of Nebraska. Distance education has grown rapidly in Nebraska, but is clearly in its infancy. Many important issues still are being identified and are far from understood. The possibilities of distance education are yet to be fully realized. But in a state with a small, spread-out population such as ours -- perhaps in any state -- it would seem that distance education holds great promise for making many forms of education accessible to …

K. Kellogg Foundation. Given its mission, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation focused its initiative on the land-grant mission of higher education and on food systems, broadly defined to range from the communities that produce the food to the communities that consume it. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), the NN21 project has been centered in the Institute of …

My Work And Welcome To It, Stephen Hillard
Nebraska Network 21: Publications
“I want to go to graduate school in English," said my student Peter, then blurted out, "and be a professor, like you." I bit my lip not to say something deflating--at the end of the semester I didn't feel my life should be anyone's goal. I knew that he pictured the life of a professor as reading interesting books, talking about them with enthusiastic students like himself, doing research one loves, and serving on a few committees. And being paid for doing this! I didn't warn Peter that the scholarly life he aspires to is seen as a scam by …
Patriarchy And Pragmatism: Ideological Contradictions In State Policies, Lily Kong, Jasmine S. Chan
Patriarchy And Pragmatism: Ideological Contradictions In State Policies, Lily Kong, Jasmine S. Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Theories concerning the state sometimes treat it as a rational system. This paper raises questions about this assumption by examining the coherence of the ideological frameworks underlying state policies in Singapore. The contradictions are shown most clearly when state policies deal with gender issues, especially where they concern women. Through an examination of such policies, we show that, under some conditions, state patriarchy may be subverted by the state's capitalistic developmental considerations. We are aware that patriarchy does not stand or fall by state policies alone, but the following article illustrates how such policies can limit the space for negotiation …

What started as two initiatives involving public and private entities in Nebraska has resulted in the development of the Governor’s Task Force on Agriculture and Natural Resources Education. Both initiatives were funded by grants from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. One went to The Reinventing Agriculture Education for the Year 2020 Project which was coordinated by the Nebraska Department of Education. The other went to the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to establish the Nebraska Network21 (NN21), a group of people working together to creatively meet the learning needs of …

"Last May at the finals of the National Geographic Bee held in Washington, DC, Alex Trebeck was getting concerned because he thought that he would be running out of questions for the ten finalists who came from throughout the country. Well, he did have enough, although it was close.
In the previous year it took just 80 questions to determine a winner of the Bee, an annual event sponsored by the National Geographic Society in which over five million kids nationwide from grades four through eight compete. In 1999, however, it took 140 questions before a winner was determined. In …
Private Interests Or Public Goods?: Dewey, Rugg, And Their Contemporary Allies On Corporate Involvement In Educational Reform Initiatives, Deron R. Boyles, Kathleen Knight Abowitz
Private Interests Or Public Goods?: Dewey, Rugg, And Their Contemporary Allies On Corporate Involvement In Educational Reform Initiatives, Deron R. Boyles, Kathleen Knight Abowitz
Educational Policy Studies Faculty Publications
In some ways, John Dewey lived through a time similar to what we now experience: the rise of corporate power in a historical moment of unsurpassed national wealth and consumer materialism, and the accompanying substantial influence of business interests in the structure, politics, and agendas of public school systems. Dewey’s writings in the first three decades of this century mark a kind of “wisdom of the elders,” offered by a public intellectual who experienced, at least in some form, the kind of tumultuous relationships we are currently witnessing between the economy and education.

An Investigation Of The Importance Parents Ascribe To Quality Criteria Established By A National Early Childhood Accrediting Agency, William Clayton Burch
An Investigation Of The Importance Parents Ascribe To Quality Criteria Established By A National Early Childhood Accrediting Agency, William Clayton Burch
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The increased use of childcare in the United States has drawn attention to the choices parents make pertaining to childcare. Professionals in the field of early childhood education have begun to question the methods parents use for choosing childcare. Questions arise about the ability of parents to detect quality in early childhood education settings. Ninety-eight parents in an urban area of Southern West Virginia were included in a sample that explored parents’ agreement with quality criteria defined by professionals in the field of early childhood education. Participants completed a 28-item survey, which provided information on demographics and consistency between parents …
Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley
Indoctrination And Assimilation In Plural Settings, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
"A twofold problem faces Canadian education. The first fold involves the indoctrination debate, still unsettled after several decades, yet still bearing decisively on educational policy. The second fold involves the changing Canadian educational landscape, now obviously characterized by increasing cultural, religious, and linguistic plurality. This plurality manifests itself in tribalism and in regular conflicts about normativity in the public square. In the midst of this plurality, many Canadian parents of school-aged children believe that courts, provincial governments, and educational authorities deny them educational justice by determining that their own religion cannot inform what their children learn in schools. Yet, from …

The Impact Of Pressure Groups On The Western Australian School Education Bill 1999 : A Case Study, Sharan Kraemer
The Impact Of Pressure Groups On The Western Australian School Education Bill 1999 : A Case Study, Sharan Kraemer
Theses : Honours
This study examines the influence which pressure groups, unelected, unrepresentative groups, exert on the legislative process. This thesis studies the issue in relation to the Western Australian School Education Bill 1999, and the action of four pressure groups- the Aboriginal legal Service of Western Australia, the Disability Services Commission, the Home Based Learning Network and the Western Australian Council of State Schools Organisations. The re-writing of the School Education Bill1999 presented an opportunity to study pressure group activity against the background of two unusual circumstances: the first being that the updating of the seventy year old Act was the occasion …

The Irish Education System And The Economy, Paddy Mcdonagh
Maine Policy Review
This article summarizes McDonagh’s remarks at the June 14, 1999 Maine Governor’s Economic Development Conference. He outlines Ireland’s educational strategies and investments of the past 30 years, as well as plans for the future, which include not only new educational initiatives but also significant investments in research and development. The educational roots of Ireland’s economic miracle include a concerted national effort to increase participation rates in higher education and a strategic effort to match the country’s education and training programs to the skills needs of global, high-tech companies. Such efforts have spanned decades, have required substantial investment, and have been …

The Argument For: Retaining Income As One Of Two Factors In Maine’S School Aid Funding Formula, Michael F. Brennan, Orlando E. Delogu
Maine Policy Review
Brennan and Delogu’s commentary asserts the importance of retaining local household income as a factor in determining school funding formulas in Maine. They note that inclusion of income in school aid equalization formulas has been embraced in over a dozen other states.
