The Effect Of Child Care Costs On The Labor Force Participation And Welfare Recipiency Of Single Mothers: Implications For Welfare Reform, Rachel Connelly, Jean Kimmel

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper considers the effect of child care costs on two labor market outcomes for single mothers - whether to participate in the labor market and whether to receive welfare. Hourly child care expenditures are estimated for all women in the sample (using data drawn from the 1992 and 1993 panels of the SIPP), whether or not they are currently using nonmaternal child care. These expenditures are then included as an independent variable predicting the probability of welfare recipiency and the probability of labor force participation. The main goal of this study, carried out by the author on behalf of the Swiss Defence Procurement Agency (DPA), was to characterise existing technologies, and identify corresponding commercially available systems, for the direct detection of explosives for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) tasks. The term “microsimulation” has been linked to a range of tools and techniques that are finding growing use in empirical social science applications. This paper considers one such area, namely the potential for microsimulation to serve the needs of the data analyst, in contrast to the more common use of microsimulation by the model user. Furthermore, the focus is on longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data analysis. The paper identifies several types of longitudinal data modeling approaches in which microsimulation is particularly relevant, suggesting algorithms with which to conduct such microsimulations. At 0829 Hrs on Monday 29th January 200 1, a deminer from Mine Action Team Number 2 from Pursat Province, was injured by a small explosion, at Svay Donkeo minefield. He was conducting Electronic Clearance drills as part of a two man demining pair, when he found an as yet unidentified metallic item which exploded in his hand when he picked it up.

On 17th January 2001 demining was being conducted around a former helicopter base in San Francisco Libre, near Managua. A deminer stepped on a PMN mine just outside the marked area while moving between the front and back of the lane. He was “going to prod” so had presumably returned to the back of the lane to remove his metal-detector.
