WMU Maritime Week 2024 Beyond Horizons: Maritime Sustainability

This proceedings is the output of the WMU Maritime Week 2024 Conference, which was held from August 27 to 30, 2024, at WMU in Malmö. As the first conference of WMU Maritime Week, it focused on themes such as the IMO World Maritime Day theme 2024: 'Navigating the Future: Safety First!', Maritime Sustainability, Digitalization, Decarbonization, Maritime Business and Logistics, and Capacity Development. A total of 42 experts in these fields presented across 8 sessions. This proceeding provides a summary of the presentations from all the speakers.

The Zero Emission of Domestic Shipping in the Republic of Korea (ZED-PK) project is an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and developing a path towards zero emissions for the domestic shipping fleet in the Republic of Korea. ZED-PK encompasses a systematic and transdisciplinary approach involving multiple stakeholders. The project is structured into three phases, each dedicated to progressively advancing the decarbonization efforts within the maritime sector.

Domestic shipping is integral to the Republic of Korea’s economy, but contributes significantly to air pollution and GHG emissions. The sector’s emissions pose environmental risks, human health threats, and additional external costs, …

The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts.
