Geographic information systems (GIS) are being increasingly deployed by transportation agencies to help them display, review, and utilize data. The primary items of interest are transportation facilities and services, which may take the form of highways, airports, bus routes, and seaports, among others. Using GIS software, transportation facilities are represented as geometric shapes; i.e., points, lines, and areas. However, it is increasingly apparent to GIS users in the field of transportation that a geometry-based approach is not sufficient.

We propose an artificial intelligence technique called stochastic learning automata to design an intelligent vehicle path controller. Presents a solution to the user equilibrium dynamic traffic routing (DTR) problem for a point diversion case using feedback control methodology. The sliding mode control technique which is a robust control methodology applicable to nonlinear systems in canonical form is employed to solve the user equilibrium DTR problem. The canonical form for this problem is obtained by using a feedback linearization technique, and the uncertainties of the system are countered by using the sliding mode principle. Simulation results show promising results.

Although the future of logistics looks bright as the new millennium approaches, logistics programs in higher education face significant changes and challenges. This article examines six challenges—three challenges facing business education in general and three challenges directly and uniquely facing logistics education. Five propositions about the future of logistics education are developed. For logistics education, particularly the traditional logistics programs, the years after the new millennium will be both the best of times and the worst of times.

Increased demand for third-party logistics providers who can offer multiple services to their customers has encouraged many entities to explore innovative ways to expand service offerings. The current research examines Class I LTL motor carriers who have expanded their services to include warehousing. While there are several ways to achieve a service expansion into warehousing, the current research focuses on firms who have elected to expand by creating a strategic alliance type relationship with an external warehouse provider. Conventional wisdom suggests that the basic job of public policy studies (and public institutions, for that matter) is to deal in a timely and practical fashion with pressing public issues of the day. The focus typically is on 'ripe' topics, 'hot' political problems. If a study can be ahead of the curve, in John Kingdon's apt phrase "an idea whose time has come," so much the better. But unlike more traditional academic research, where the focus is timeless — i.e., an explanation of previously inexplicable phenomena, timeliness is a prime reason for initiating a policy study.

The signing of the NAFTA agreement signaled the beginning of increased efforts to harmonize trade between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Unfortunately the harmonization of transportation links is lagging far behind proposed implementation dates. This narrative describes the highway safety, and concerns expressed by highway safety advocates and Teamsters union representatives, and documented by the GAO. The authors propose a market based alternative to restricting transborder traffic to the narrow commercial zone presently in place.

What Is A Logistics Analyst? A Perspective From One British University On Increasing Student Awareness And Knowledge Of Logistics Education And Career Opportunities, John Dinwoodie

Many sophomore Transport students at a British university were unfamiliar with the role of the logistics analyst. This paper discusses the current extent of student knowledge of some employment roles within intermodal distribution and the processes by which students acquire an understanding of it,providing new information for logistics teachers and career advisors. Qualitative analysis of student descriptions of relevant roles revealed a schema whereby concepts evolved, enabling a teaching package to be devised which accelerated the learning process. The assistance of practitioners, and similar studies by other academics are needed in attempting to raise the awareness of future students.

Tri-Met, the transit agency serving the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area is implementing a new bus dispatching system (BDS) that includes automated vehicle location (AVL) technology. An important objective in the agency's decision to invest in a new dispatching system was to maintain or improve service reliability in an urban environment characterized by rapid growth and worsening traffic congestion.

This report presents the results of a preliminary analysis of axle weights from the Oregon DOT Slow-Speed Weigh in Motion (SWIM) scale at the Wyeth weigh station.* This report includes an analysis of methodology and variables used in the study; estimates of accuracy and precision of the WIM readings; and a regression analysis of the WIM and static scale weighings. Axles weights were collected from the traffic stream.

In theory, proximity to a light rail (LRT) may have two different effects on residential property values. On the one hand, accessibility (proximity to the LRT stations) may increase property values. On the other hand, nuisance effects (proximity to the LRT line and stations) may decrease property values. Existing empirical studies are inconclusive, and failure to separate the effects of accessibility from the nuisance effects may explain some of the ambiguity. This study reviews the efforts of Singapore to curb road congestion through restraints on motor vehicle ownership as well as user fees. In particular, it traces the history of the famous Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), and then discusses its shortcomings, also the need for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), its advantages and disadvantages and the technology involved in this state of the art system. This paper identifies important research questions to be addressed in connection with the first full-scale adoption of ERP.
