Improved Safety Performance Functions For Signalized Intersections, Karen Dixon, Christopher Monsere, Raul Avelar, Joel Stephen Barnett, Paty Escobar, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

For this effort, the research team developed new safety performance functions (SPFs) for signalized intersections in Oregon. The modeling dataset consisted of 964 crashes from a total of 73 intersections that were randomly selected based on the presence of a traffic signal (identified through the crash data records). The SPFs were developed using a Poissonlognormal Generalized Linear Mixed model framework for total crashes and severe injury crashes (coded as KAB). Three SPFs were developed: 1) an SPF for total crashes, which relies on both major and minor AADTs to predict the expected number of crashes; 2) an SPF for KAB …

Cooperation In Delay-Tolerant Networks With Wireless Energy Transfer: Performance Analysis And Optimization, Dusit Niyato, Ping Wang, Hwee-Pink Tan, Walid Saad, Dong In Kim Aug 2015

Cooperation In Delay-Tolerant Networks With Wireless Energy Transfer: Performance Analysis And Optimization, Dusit Niyato, Ping Wang, Hwee-Pink Tan, Walid Saad, Dong In Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider a delay-tolerant network (DTN) whose mobile nodes are assigned to collect packets from data sources and deliver them to a sink (i.e., a gateway). Each mobile node operates by using energy transferred wirelessly from the gateway. For such a network, two main issues are studied. First, when a mobile node is at the data source, this node must decide on whether to accept the packet received from the data source or not. In contrast, whenever a mobile node is at the gateway, it has to decide on whether to transmit the packets collected from the data sources or …

Development Of Bus-Stop Time Models In Dense Urban Areas: A Case Study In Washington Dc, Stephen Arhin, Errol Noel Aug 2015

Development Of Bus-Stop Time Models In Dense Urban Areas: A Case Study In Washington Dc, Stephen Arhin, Errol Noel

Mineta Transportation Institute

Bus transit reliability depends on several factors including the route of travel, traffic conditions, time of day, and conditions at the bus stops along the route. The number of passengers alighting or boarding, fare payment method, dwell time (DT), and the location of the bus stop also affect the overall reliability of bus transit service. This study defines a new variable, Total Bus Stop Time (TBST) which includes DT and the time it takes a bus to safely maneuver into a bus stop and the re-entering the main traffic stream. It is thought that, if the TBST is minimized at …

Neighborhood Crime And Transit Station Access Mode Choice - Phase Iii Of Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior, Christopher E. Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Bruce S. Appleyard Aug 2015

Neighborhood Crime And Transit Station Access Mode Choice - Phase Iii Of Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior, Christopher E. Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Bruce S. Appleyard

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report provides the findings from the third phase of a three-part study about the influences of neighborhood crimes on travel mode choice. While previous phases found evidence that high levels of neighborhood crime discourage people from choosing to walk, bicycle and ride transit, consistent with the authors’ hypothesis, they also produced counterintuitive findings suggesting that in some cases, high crime neighborhoods encourage transit ridership at the expense of driving—the opposite of what common sense would suggest. Phase 3 tested possible explanations for these counterintuitive findings with a series of methodological improvements. These improvements were:

  • Improvement 1: Used the Bay …

On Mining Lifestyles From User Trip Data, Meng-Fen Chiang, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large cities today are facing major challenges in planning and policy formulation to keep their growth sustainable. In this paper, we aim to gain useful insights about people living in a city by developing novel models to mine user lifestyles represented by the users' activity centers. Two models, namely ACMM and ACHMM, have been developed to learn the activity centers of each user using a large dataset of bus and subway train trips performed by passengers in Singapore. We show that ACHMM and ACMM yield similar accuracies in location prediction task. We also propose methods to automatically predict "home", "work" …

Using Visual Data Mining In Highway Traffic Safety Analysis And Decision Making, Yao-Te Tsai, Huw D. Smith, Stephen M. Swartz, Fadel M. Megahed

Journal of Transportation Management

An ongoing, two-fold challenge involves extracting useful information from the massive amounts of highway crash data and explaining complicated statistical models to inform the public about highway safety. Highway safety is critical to the trucking industry and highway funding policy. One method to analyze complex data is through the application of visual data mining tools. In this paper, we address the following three questions: a) what existing data visualization tools can assist with highway safety theory development and in policy-making?; b) can visual data mining uncover unknown relationships to inform the development of theory or practice? and c) can a …

Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor Jul 2015

Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor

Journal of Transportation Management

There is theoretical and practical evidence indicating the existence of significant differences between the needs and wants of firms and end consumers, as well as the existence of significantly different needs between offline and online environments. Therefore, it is not clear how effectively measures of logistics service quality developed in an offline, B2B context can be applied to an online, B2C environment. This manuscript explores the elements of logistics service quality that end consumers value in an online context. The literature on logistics service quality in B2B and the literature on online consumer satisfaction are integrated. This results in the …

Promoting Intermodal Connectivity At California’S High-Speed Rail Stations, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Deike Peters, Wenbin Wei Jul 2015

Promoting Intermodal Connectivity At California’S High-Speed Rail Stations, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Deike Peters, Wenbin Wei

Mineta Transportation Institute

High-speed rail (HSR) has emerged as one of the most revolutionary and transformative transportation technologies, having a profound impact on urban-regional accessibility and inter-city travel across Europe, Japan, and more recently China and other Asian countries. One of HSR’s biggest advantages over air travel is that it offers passengers a one-seat ride into the center of major cities, eliminating time-consuming airport transfers and wait times, and providing ample opportunities for intermodal transfers at these locales. Thus, HSR passengers are typically able to arrive at stations that are only a short walk away from central business districts and major tourist attractions, …

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton Jul 2015

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban planning and public-health research has long been interested in the connection between land-use mix and travel. Interest from urban planners stems from the potential of transportation efficiency gains achieved by an increased land-use mix and subsequent shortening of trip lengths; whereas, public-health research advocates an increased land-use mix as an effective policy for facilitating greater physical activity. Yet, despite the transportation, land-use, and health benefits related to improving land-use mix and the extent of topical attention given by researchers, no consensus has been reached regarding the magnitude of its effect on travel. This absence of agreement may largely be …

The Benefits Of Transit In The United States: A Review And Analysis Of Benefit-Cost Studies, Christopher E. Ferrell Jul 2015

The Benefits Of Transit In The United States: A Review And Analysis Of Benefit-Cost Studies, Christopher E. Ferrell

Mineta Transportation Institute

This white paper presents the findings from a review and analysis of the available literature on benefit-cost (b-c) estimates of existing U.S. transit systems. Following an inventory of the literature, the b-c estimates from each study were organized according to the type of study area (e.g., rural, small urban, urban, etc.). Through this process, categories of monetary transit benefits were identified. The estimated dollar value for each benefit category was divided by the total estimated costs of providing the transit services, thus creating a benefit-specific b-c ratio for each category and allowing benefits from each study to be compared on …

Fast Optimal Aggregate Point Search For A Merged Set On Road Networks, Weiwei Sun, Chong Chen, Baihua Zheng, Chunan Chen, Liang Zhu, Weimo Liu, Yan Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aggregate nearest neighbor query, which returns an optimal target point that minimizes the aggregate distance for a given query point set, is one of the most important operations in spatial databases and their application domains. This paper addresses the problem of finding the aggregate nearest neighbor for a merged set that consists of the given query point set and multiple points needed to be selected from a candidate set, which we name as merged aggregate nearest neighbor(MANN) query. This paper proposes two algorithms to process MANN query on road networks when aggregate function is max. Then, we extend the algorithms …
