The Impact Of The Federal Stamp Program On Food Purchasing Habits Of The Socioeconomic Class, Joe Turner

The implementation of the Federal Food Stamp program affords an opportunity to do responsible research on this topic due to the manner in which the program is administered. The fact that coverage is authorized on a county basis rather than a state-wide basis, which requires that each individual county request and apply for the Stamp Program, provided the availability of a sample area in southern Kentucky where five contiguous counties existed, three of which were participating in the program and two of which were not. This permitted both a control and experimental group from which to draw a sample.

Statements about the relative proportions of blacks and whites owning their homes are not infrequently stated in dogmatic fashion, even though not supported by "hard data." One possible use of the data contained in this report is to test hypothetical statements about race and home ownership. The data herein are all derived from Bureau of the Census computer tapes -- it will be assumed here that the available census figures approximate "reality. "

1970 First Count Census Data: Population And Housing Characteristics For Douglas County, Nebraska, John P. Zipay

Publications

Changes in Omaha population from 1960 to 1970 have been more areal than real. While significant spatial changes of population may be noted, the rate of population growth during the decade can only be described as moderate. This is a conclusion from initial output from the U.S. Bureau of the Census' 1970 First Count computer tapes.

The census computer tapes provide population and housing data in more detail and in finer geographic areas than the traditional printed reports. In addition, since they are the medium through which the printed reports are generated, they provide valuable advance data to census users.

The states of Kentucky and Ohio have numerous reservoir projects at various stages of planning and construction. Each of the projects produces substantial social impact for the residents of the area and particularly for those persons affected by a loss of property and homes. This impact is not uniform in that people respond differently to displacement and the methods of adjusting relocation are known to differ among people.

Purpose To inventory the number of persons presently employed in the various occupational areas in the Columbus, Nebraska service area and to identify the prOjected employment needs due to turnover and expansion for the next year and the following two years in the same occupations. Methods. The inventory was conducted in postal zip code area 686 surrounding Columbus, Nebraska. A 25 percent random sampling of business firms in the area netted 667 businesses to be inventoried. This study is an extension and refinement of a previous report on the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) by Perry P. Chang. The present study makes three major changes in Chang's report, in that it obtains output and value added of industries in the Omaha area, exports and imports of the industries, certain income multipliers, forecasts of output in the Omaha area. for 1975 and 1990, and compares the three results with Chang's.

This is the third of a series of continuing studies in the attempt to ascertain Omaha's retail trade area. The method utilized, as in the past, is that of recording license plate prefix numbers at the three major and two minor shopping points within the Omaha SMSA. Emphasis is placed upon the three major shopping points, Downtown, Crossroads and Westroads, for they are the best indicators of the regional focus of Omaha. The present report aims to show the procedures and findings of an input-output study for the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). This study is based on national technical co-efficients and some simplifying assumptions, with 1963 as the base year. While it is provisional in the sense that this study may be improved through the use of additional data and relaxation of certain assumptions, this report will show some interesting aspects of the area's economy and trends of its development. The milk marketing area of Omaha, shown on Figure 1, includes all or parts of 12 Nebraska counties and 20 counties in western Iowa. Normally 80 percent of Omaha's fluid milk needs comes from the region outlined as Omaha's milk marketing area. Southwest of Omaha, the major milk producing counties of Gage, Jefferson and Lancaster are part of the Lincoln milk marketing area. On September 29, 1967, Armour and. Company announced that effective six months from that date, the Omaha Armour plant would be closed, displacing a labor force of approximately 2, 200 workers. This statement, announcing the closing of the third meatpacking firm in Omaha within the past two years, was startling and indicative of far- reaching consequences for Omaha, its people and economy.
