Francis Lieber: Anglican And Gallican Liberty Reading And Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson

Francis Lieber, who later held the first formal political science chair in America (Columbia, 1858), contrasted the English and French contributions to civil liberty in an article he published in 1849, the year following the European revolutions of 1848. Four years later, Lieber extended his analysis and added a major section on American liberty in Of Civil Liberty and Self-Government (1853). More than a century afterwards, Friedrich A. Hayek, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1973, drew on Lieber's comparison of Anglican and Gallican Liberty in his treatise on political philosophy, The Constitution of Liberty (1960).

Large-scale wildlands reserve systems offer one of the best hopes for slowing, if not reversing, the loss of biodiversity and wilderness. Establishing such reserves requires both sound biology and effective advocacy. Attempts by The Wildlands Project and its cooperators to meld science and advocacy in the service of conservation is working, but is not without some problems. Scientists and advocates have differences in methods of work, different understandings of the origins and place of values in conservation, and differing expectations about the efficacy of biological information in achieving protection. Transparency is on the rise, touted as the solution to such disparate problems asfinancial volatility, environmental degradation, money laundering, and corruption. Buttransparency faces much opposition, particularly from those under scrutiny. Such actorsoften have strong incentives to avoid providing information. To explain the growingdemand for transparency and to assess its prospects for success requires attention tomatters of politics – that is, power. Power is often needed to induce disclosures orrestructure incentives. And the information thus revealed can shift power from the formerholders of secrets to the newly informed. The Sustainable, The Expendable, And The Obsolete, Michael D. Lieber

This is a preliminary exploration of the concept of sustainability and its potential usefulness to anthropologists. “Sustainable” is distinguished from “stable” and “viable” in terms of its implications of directionality of time, pointing both backward and forward. Given the time implications, the contexts of “sustainable Xs” (technology, activity, development, etc.) are crucial to explaining what happened to X in the past and prognosticating its future. The argument is illustrated by analyzing data on obsolete fishing practices on Kapingamarangi Atoll (Federated States of Micronesia), focusing on the contexts of change in political /religious organization in the twentieth century.
