As part of the Brookings Scholar Lecture Series, Brookings Mountain West presents a lecture titled "Migrants and Refugees: Are they holding us back or pushing us forward?" by Brookings Fellow in Global Economy and Development, Dany Bahar. It is often cited that human mobility is key to economic growth and productivity. Evidence also points to the economic costs and benefits of international migration for both the sending and receiving countries. This lecture explores if roads to economic growth and prosperity require restrictions to migration, or quite the contrary.

Having the world's largest unbroken sea-beach and vast coastline, Bangladesh has an immense potentiality to develop sustainable coastal and marine tourism. According to the World Inequality Report 2018 (WID 2017), Brazil is one of the few countries that has not recently displayed an increase in income inequality, having instead sustained it on persistently very high levels, actually composing the world’s “inequality frontier”. While such levels of inequality may be partly attributed to poor distribution of property rights, human capital endowments, and specificity of labor relations, a significant part of it is undoubtedly due the national fiscal system’s reduced distributive capacity, compromised by one the worst taxation systems in the world. Ship breaking is comparatively a sustainable business, particularly in the developing world, but the conditions where it is practiced is non-sustainable. Ship breaking is the process of dismantling ships and selling their parts - primarily the steel - for scrap. The main impetus for breaking a ship down is that maintenance costs go up as a ship ages. Shipping companies also have to pay port charges, crew salaries and oil fees for their ships, so when they are no longer economically viable they are sold to ship recyclers who strip the old ships down, salvaging anything of value. This study aims to see whether appreciation and depreciation have asymmetric impact on Indonesia's industrial exports and which impact is greater. The researcher uses disaggregated panel of Indonesian industrial product export HS Code 10 digit level with all partner country of export. Acquired domestic appreciation has a negative impact and depreciation has a positive impact on exports, where the impact is both asymmetric. The negative impact of appreciation is greater than the positive impact of depreciation. This study analyzes the influence of the level of company ownership and also analyzes further about evaluating the requirements of foreign capital ownership as a Negative Investment List (NIL). This study uses a panel of Indonesian manufacturing companies 2007-2014 with the estimated GMM method of Arellano-Bond. The estimation results show an increase achieved with foreign ownership, but after reaching a certain point the increase or increase as intended inverted U. Required to achieve optimal needs. The ability of Indonesia’s private banks to muster funds vary from one province to another. The test result from 33 provinces in Indonesia during 2011-2015 show that the ratio of GDP against BUDGETS, the private bank’s delivery channel ratio, and population density have a significant influence on the market share of private banks. When exclude DKI, the ratio of trade and services sector in regional GDP to bank deposits and the ratio of civil servants to the working population also have a significant effect. The ratio of APBD to GRDP gives a negative influence, while other variables contribute positively. Zoning …

The study attempts to find out to what extent "grease the wheels" hypothesis can explain the bribery phenomena in Indonesia that has been done by the poor to access public services like public administration, police, health, and education. The study used cross-section data from a national survey of the Public Perception of the Corruption Trend 2018 conducted by Lembaga Survey Indonesia (LSI). The survey’s respondents are 3,670 households spread in 34 provinces in Indonesia. The study shows that the grease the wheels hypothesis is found only in health sector, confirming that the characteristics of the public services determine the likelihood …
