Perspectives Of Residential Treatment Center Staff On Organizational Climate And Rehabilitation, Erika Drayton
Perspectives Of Residential Treatment Center Staff On Organizational Climate And Rehabilitation, Erika Drayton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Residential treatment centers (RTCs) within the juvenile justice system (JJS) are commonly used as an out-of-home placement for adjudicated youths who require more individualized care. Several researchers studied the JJS; however, few explored RTCs or the direct care staff. Probation officers and detention facility staff have been the focus of previous studies. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of RTC staff on organizational climate and rehabilitation of adjudicated youths. The participants included 12 direct care RTC staff age 18 and older who had worked with adjudicated youths for one year or more. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological …

A Comparison Of Methods For Binning Responses To Open-Ended Survey Items About Everyday Events: A New Tailored-Binning Approach, Derrick M. Angier, John D. Mayer
UNH Personality Lab
Psychologists and other researchers employ diverse types of surveys and survey items. Lifespace-type items include questions about a person’s external life conditions and activities, for example, “How many hours did you spend playing video games last week?” and elicit countable responses, for example, 0 hours, < 1 hour, 1-2 hours, 3-5 hours, etc., where the response intervals are referred to as bins. We report on a procedure for creating tailored bins for participants and compare it to two other binning approaches in an original and a replication study (Ns = 263 and 246). The Tailored binning approach developed here is highly structured, but, for convenience, can also be applied in less formal fashions. In the structured form focused on here, it compares favorably with alternative approaches such as Equal Percentage and Equal Interval methods. The pros and cons of each method …
African American Mothers’ Descriptions Of Teaching Their Daughters Racial Socialization And Identity Development In Affluent Communities, Vashonda Helen Eason
African American Mothers’ Descriptions Of Teaching Their Daughters Racial Socialization And Identity Development In Affluent Communities, Vashonda Helen Eason
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American mothers’ experience of teaching self-love and confidence to their daughters while faced with discriminatory practices has been examined regarding African American parenting in urban and low-income areas. However, the experiences of African American mothers who face similar discrimination but live in affluent communities are less understood. Grounded in motivation and systems theories, the purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to describe how African American mothers in affluent communities teach racial socialization and identity development to their daughters. Ten African American mothers residing in the Northwest Arkansas region participated in one-on-one in-person interviews to explore their individual experiences …
Moral Positioning In The South China Sea Disputes Between The Philippines And China, Eryan Ramadhani
Moral Positioning In The South China Sea Disputes Between The Philippines And China, Eryan Ramadhani
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
For the past two decades, disputes between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea (SCS) have experienced continuous escalation. Benigno Aquino III filed an arbitration case against China. This legal success was later overturned by Rodrigo Duterte in exchange for closer relations with China. However, his decision did not cease hostility in the SCS. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. then brought the Philippines back on legal track and steered the country closer to the United States, which further heightened tensions. Built on this background, this article intends to explain the unceasing escalation in the SCS using Positioning Theory (PT). This …
The Role Of Acculturative Stress, Discrimination In Healthcare Settings, And Migration-Related Trauma On Hiv Prevention And Mental Health Among Immigrant Hispanic Sexual Minority Men: An Integrated Model Of Acculturation And Minority Stress, Jonathan Lopez Matos
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation expands Minority Stress Theory (MST) by integrating the Fourfold Acculturation Model (FAM) to examine the impact of psycho-sociocultural stressors on health outcomes among immigrant Hispanic sexual minority men (HSMM) in the U.S. The study explored how language proficiency, acculturative stress, discrimination in healthcare, migration-related trauma, and stress-related growth influence HIV prevention behaviors and mental health. Survey data from 194 Spanish-speaking immigrant HSMM revealed that monolingual Spanish speakers experienced significantly higher acculturative stress than bilinguals. Acculturative stress significantly mediated the association between stressors and health outcomes, such as HIV testing and mental health symptoms. Discrimination and trauma were directly …

Tracing Reverberations: Vietnamese Refugee Mothers' Adaptations To Complex Structural Forces And Intergenerational Engagements, Kim Khanh Nguyen-Nalpas
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The main purpose of this study is to learn how refugee mothers adapt to hierarchical systems of oppression with agency and resistance. Global refugee forums and decades of past research on refugees have identified the importance of increasing agency to best support refugees as they resettle. Previous research by the author has demonstrated that refugee mothers model resistance to oppressive systems which has implications for children who witness this resistance. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 Vietnamese refugee mothers to explore their mothering practices, how they adapted given the socio-political forces shaping their lives, and how these adaptations reverberated through …

Childhood Sexual Abuse Among Asian American Adults: Prevalence, Cultural Barriers, And Mental Health Implications, Kruti S. Chaliawala, Liliana Rojas-Guyler
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Childhood sexual abuse represents a significant public health concern, particularly within minority populations, where adversities and complications are prevalent but understudied. This study aims to investigate the mental health of Asian American childhood sexual abuse survivors and explore the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among Asian adults. A secondary analysis of the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data was conducted, including a final sample of 1,894 Asian adults (0.16% of the total sample size of N = 401,958). Among these participants, 16.8% (n = 1,894) reported experiencing CSA. The most common forms of abuse were inappropriate touching …
Religion: Evolutionary Foundation For, Nicole Fellice Ko, Norman P. Li
Religion: Evolutionary Foundation For, Nicole Fellice Ko, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Religion refers to a structured set of spiritual beliefs and rituals. Evolution refers to the process by which living organisms transform and develop over time. Religion—the belief in spiritual beings—influences nearly every aspect of life, making it challenging to understand many phenomena without considering its influence (Bloom, 2012). About two-thirds of the world’s population is religious (Kramer & Tong, 2024); 70% of Americans consider themselves spiritual, and 83% believe they have a spirit separate from their bodies (PEW Research Center, 2023). Throughout history, religion has played a significant role in conflicts like war and continues to influence contemporary issues such …

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have made significant strides in generating human-like conversations. With AI's expanding capabilities in mimicking human interactions, its affordability and accessibility underscore the potential of AI chatbots to facilitate negative emotional disclosure or venting. The study's primary objective is to highlight the potential benefits of AI-assisted venting by comparing its effectiveness to venting through a traditional journaling platform in reducing negative affect and increasing perceived social support. We conducted a pre-registered within-subject experiment involving 150 participants who completed both traditional venting and AI-assisted venting conditions with counterbalancing and a wash-out period of 1-week between …
Social Influence In Close Relationships, Kenneth Tan, Ya Hui Michelle See
Social Influence In Close Relationships, Kenneth Tan, Ya Hui Michelle See

Romantic partners frequently spend substantial amounts of time with each other (Gerstel & Sarkisian, 2006), forming profound connections, creating meaningful memories (Philippe et al., 2013), and having an indelible impact on one's self-views and identity (e.g., Aron & Aron, 1997). Indeed, extant research showcases that the relationship between romantic partners plays a pivotal role in addressing a multitude of life's challenges together. Besides addressing goals that are specifically related to surviving and reproducing, romantic partners also serve as vital sources for assistance, advice, companionship, and emotional support (see Feeney & Collins, 2014; Finkel et al., 2014; Fitzsimons et al., 2015). …
Connectedness And Engagement As Predictors Of Dual-Factor Mental Health Groups: A Latent Profile Analysis, Kyle Wilson
Connectedness And Engagement As Predictors Of Dual-Factor Mental Health Groups: A Latent Profile Analysis, Kyle Wilson
LSU Master's Theses
When it was introduced, the dual-factor model of mental health revolutionized student mental health conceptualization by including measures of subjective well-being alongside psychopathological indicators. However, the manner in which students are assigned to mental health profiles may not be reflective of their actual characteristics. Therefore, the current study sought to expand on dual-factor model research through the employment of latent profile analysis (LPA), a person-centered approach to group classification, to examine to what degree well-established constructs predict student mental health. Constructs selected for the current study included school connectedness and school engagement. School connectedness is generally considered a protective factor …

Expectations Versus Reality In New Cairo's Gated Communities: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Socio-Spatial Features, Ala'a Marwan
Theses and Dissertations
This research aims to introduce a new framework to identify the disparities between gated community residents’ experiences and real estate developers' visions towards the development. As New Cairo experiences significant growth, many residents are increasingly relocating to gated communities. It has become crucial to assess users’ expectations before moving and their lived experience post-moving to allocate the gaps between their expectations and reality, otherwise, the GC developments will grow apart from users’ updated preferences. The research focuses on the socio-spatial qualities such as accessibility to services and facilities, community interaction, and vast green areas between buildings for privacy, all of …

He was very much cherished and highly respected by all board members throughout his long, dedicated and remarkable service to AHP and its members.
The Impact Of Race And Gender On Benevolent Sexism Endorsement, Kelsey Berryman
The Impact Of Race And Gender On Benevolent Sexism Endorsement, Kelsey Berryman
Dissertations
Research investigating the influence of race and gender conjointly on sexism endorsement is limited. Much of this existing research exclusively focuses on difference between Black and White women and men or have focused on race and gender as separate entities. The goal of this study is to investigate gender and race difference in benevolent sexism (BS) endorsement while considering relevant cultural factors for each race-gender group. A mixed-method design examined differences in endorsement of BS for Asian, Black, Latina/o, and White women and men. A meditational model using each race-gender group as independent variables examined difference in BS as mediated …

Open-Minded Cognition And Transmission Of Norms, Mia Jasmine Martinez
Master's Theses
This research aimed to explore general and general normative open-minded cognition, respectively, as shaped by prominent social figures (i.e., normative referents). The administered survey included two distinct measures in attempt to estimate the amount and/or severity of influence each referent possesses over the participants, GOMC (i.e., General Open-Minded Cognition) and GNORM (i.e., General Open-Minded Cognition as determined by normative standards). The research hypothesized the GNORM of the determinants: Caregivers, Teachers, Community Leaders, and Peers, have a statistically significant affect over both the GOMC and GNORM of the participants, due to the fundamental psychological authority each determinant maintains over the participant …

The study also makes suggestions for improving the websites. Among the members of the International Guide Dog Federation, 110 official websites of the organizations were analyzed. Websites were evaluated based on criteria including organizational basics, staff details, top page images, donation information, guide dog application guidance, user comments, and specific guide dog information. The websites play various roles, such as providing both general and visually impaired people with information on organizational activities, while calling for donations. …
Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso
Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso
UNH Personality Lab
We examine evidence for the validity of different measures under the label emotional intelligence (EI). Some measures are valid for the assessment of EI and others are valid for the assessment of socioemotional attributes (SEA). The constructs of EI and SEA are defined and measures of each described, along with the mental response processes the measures elicit: test-takers’ abilities, self-estimated attributes, or observer reports. Both EI and SEA measures are valid but for distinctly different purposes, and the two classes of measures make different predictions. We add our voices to those who have advocated for dropping the EI label from …

The Effects Of The Replication Crisis Instruction On Skepticism, Ericka Hoppes
The Effects Of The Replication Crisis Instruction On Skepticism, Ericka Hoppes
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Over the past decade, there has been growing concern regarding the Replication Crisis in psychology. The crisis has called into question the credibility of psychological research by highlighting the field’s difficulty in reproducing findings (Open Science Collaboration, 2015), as well as the prevalence of questionable research practices amongst psychologists (e.g., p-hacking, falsifying data, incomplete reporting of measures, etc.). Given that the crisis presents psychological research through a critical lens, learning about the aspects of the crisis can be a useful pedagogical tool for helping students develop a healthy sense of skepticism regarding scientific studies. The present study investigated how teaching …
Examining Antecedents Of Diversity Initiative Fatigue: A Moderatedmediation Model, Anne Simpson
Examining Antecedents Of Diversity Initiative Fatigue: A Moderatedmediation Model, Anne Simpson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis investigates the relationships between bias awareness, motivation to respond without prejudice, racialized attitudes, and diversity initiative fatigue (DIF) among employees within an academic setting, specifically focusing on faculty and staff at Western Kentucky University. Data were collected through a survey-based approach to measure these constructs and assess their relationships. This study hypothesized that bias awareness negatively correlates with DIF and motivation to respond without prejudice mediating this relationship. Furthermore, the research examines how racialized attitudes moderate the relationship between bias awareness and motivation to respond without prejudice. By examining these relationships using a moderated mediation model, the study …
College Students’ Beliefs: Association Between Skin Color And Acceptance, Christopher James Thompson
College Students’ Beliefs: Association Between Skin Color And Acceptance, Christopher James Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
The Multiracial population represents the fastest-growing demographic group in the United States and is expected to more than double by 2060 (Vespa et al., 2018). Despite this rapid increase in the Multiracial population, there is a dearth of research regarding racial identity development, anxiety, and depression on this group. Social inclusion has been recognized as a fundamental human need, and Multiracial individuals may be more likely to be accepted into a majority group if their appearance is racially ambiguous. The current study builds on previous knowledge by utilizing a novel measure developed to examine the beliefs held by Monoracial and …
Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. The results did not support the primary hypotheses, as most empathy-related measures showed no statistically significant …
The Mediating Role Of Social Connectedness In The Association Between Volunteering And Affect In Daily Life: A Dynamic Approach, Megan E. Mansfield
The Mediating Role Of Social Connectedness In The Association Between Volunteering And Affect In Daily Life: A Dynamic Approach, Megan E. Mansfield
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Sustained engagement in prosocial behaviors, like volunteering is an evidence-supported facilitator of well-being. Volunteering and well-being are also dynamic processes unfolding over long and short timespans, which is well reflected in research on well-being (e.g., Heshmati et al., 2023) but less so in the research on volunteering. This is the case despite existing evidence demonstrating that dynamic changes in components of well-being, like emotions, are associated with engagement in particular behaviors including civic or prosocial behaviors (Hou & Bonanno, 2018; Snippe et al., 2017). Therefore, it would be reasonable to suspect that volunteering may have a similar dynamic relationship with …
A Motivational Approach To Understanding Uncertainty And Information-Seeking As An Inherent Condition Of Relationships, Samantha Brindley Wozniak
A Motivational Approach To Understanding Uncertainty And Information-Seeking As An Inherent Condition Of Relationships, Samantha Brindley Wozniak
Wayne State University Dissertations
Romantic relationships are precarious contexts where individuals have a significant opportunity to constrain their close other’s outcomes (Kelley & Thibault, 1978). Such circumstances make uncertainty in a relationship challenging and inherently impose vulnerability to hurt and rejection for both partners (Murray et al., 2006). To deal with these challenges, people are known to employ information-seeking behaviors as ways to improve confidence in their perceptions of the relationship (Knobloch & Solomon, 1999; 2002). Despite existing perspectives on relational uncertainty and communication, there lacks a parsimonious framework identifying what motivates different information-seeking behaviors. The research presented here suggests that a regulatory focus …
Experiences Of Community Leaders And Organizers Within The Stop Six Community, Caitlin Herron
Experiences Of Community Leaders And Organizers Within The Stop Six Community, Caitlin Herron
Social Work Theses - Archive
Although community-based and grassroots leadership research exists, little exists in the way of exploring the personal and relational experiences of community organizers to their work and to their community. Using data collected from semi-structured interviews with self-identified community leaders, this research addresses insights into their lived experiences. In particular, a thematic exploration looks at what appeared across each interview. This research is intended to serve as a basis for future research into the lived experiences of community organizers outside of one specific experience or cause, but rather to take an in-depth look into them, their perceptions, and their relationship to …
