The Political Pandemic: Investigating The Relationship Between Political Ideology And Covid-19 Compliance, Allison Moore
The Political Pandemic: Investigating The Relationship Between Political Ideology And Covid-19 Compliance, Allison Moore
Undergraduate Theses
One key to curtailing the health costs of COVID-19 is adherence to social distancing measures. Despite their importance, distancing measures seem to have proved divisive. The present research sought to identify ideological differences in behavioral compliance to distancing measures and to account for the psychological underpinnings of behavioral differences. A first study (April, 2020; N=571) using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk revealed conservatives to be significantly less likely to obey social distancing recommendations than liberals. Differences among conservatives and liberals in adherence to self-reported social distancing practices were significantly mediated by perceived COVID-19 health risk and perceived media accuracy in covering the …
Analyzing Two-Year College Student Success Using Structural Equation Modeling, Jessica Taylor
Analyzing Two-Year College Student Success Using Structural Equation Modeling, Jessica Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The goal of this study is to more fully understand the scope of community college student success using the principles of mindset, engagement, and college readiness. Using structural equation modeling ensures this study is able to measure the combined effects these concepts have on student success, group differences, and the combined model of student success. Findings suggest student success can be significantly impacted by self-belief and mindset behaviors that can outweigh the initial effect of academically under-prepared students. Groups included in this study are non-traditional students, minority populations, first generation students, and Pell eligible students.
Religious Motivation, Priming And Their Effects On Sexist Language, Bridget Bard, Hank Rothgerber
Religious Motivation, Priming And Their Effects On Sexist Language, Bridget Bard, Hank Rothgerber
Undergraduate Theses
This experiment delves into the potential effects of sexist language used in the Christian religious context on increased use of sexist language, and endorsement of sexism on an individual level. In order to demonstrate a relationship between these two variables, an experiment was designed. Participants were exposed to either a religious or neutral priming session and were then immediately asked to complete several scales and measures of sexist language, sexism, and their level of intrinsic religious motivation. The hypothesis was that participants who ranked lower on intrinsic religious motivation, and who received a religious prime, would generate increased sexist language …
Supporting Women Veterans: Transitioning From Military Life To University Life, Kristen M. Zellers
Supporting Women Veterans: Transitioning From Military Life To University Life, Kristen M. Zellers
Undergraduate Theses
Many researchers have analyzed the various adversities that women servicemembers/veterans face in the military, upon reintegration into society, and upon transition into a university setting. These researchers suggest that women veterans experience an identity crisis throughout those three stages of their military career and future plans (Baechtold & DeSawal, 2009; Heineman, 2016; Women Warriors, 2011). What the research lacks is a more in-depth analysis of the women’s experiences and a look into how prevalent identity crises are among female veterans. The present study analyzed these ideas. Student women veterans (N = 9) from three different universities in the Mid-Western …
The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Self-Esteem For Successive Generations, Molly A. Bee
The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Self-Esteem For Successive Generations, Molly A. Bee
Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem across three generations: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. The researchers hypothesized that parenting styles from Baby Boomers to Generations X and Y have shifted from authoritarian to permissive, so a decrease in authoritarian parenting behaviors and an increase in permissive parenting styles were expected across the three generations. Further, we expected a decrease in self-esteem across the three generations, and speculate that this hypothesized change in parenting styles might relate to the decreases in the self-esteem of each generation. A total of 111 …
The Nerve: Associations Between Perceived Parenting Style And Coping With Stress, Lauren Mcgrew
The Nerve: Associations Between Perceived Parenting Style And Coping With Stress, Lauren Mcgrew
Undergraduate Theses
Throughout a lifetime, women are twice as likely as men to develop an anxiety disorder. Several factors – biological, psychological, and social/environmental – are involved in the mechanisms of anxiety. The present study was designed with particular interest in the association between parents’ parenting styles and daughter anxiety, specifically paternal influences in correlation with how daughters cope with stress. Previous studies suggest that anxious tendencies in parents can be transferred to their children (Ballash, Leyfer, Buckley, & Woodruff-Borden, 2006). Studies have also identified three main parenting styles – authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive – which may also play a role in …
The Influence Of Gender And Language Complexity On The Credibility Of Expert Witness Testimony, Darcy Egan
The Influence Of Gender And Language Complexity On The Credibility Of Expert Witness Testimony, Darcy Egan
Undergraduate Theses
With the increased use in expert witness testimony in civil trials, the decisions that jury members have made based on those testimonies have become very controversial. Previous research indicates that when a testimony is particularly complex, mock jurors will rely on cues outside the content of the testimony in order to determine the credibility of the witness. Research shows that there are different cues that are associated with higher credibility the expert. Common cues include the gender, occupation, and level of language complexity of the expert witness. This study used these three different cues as the independent variables, with two …
