Sex, Gender Roles, And Bias In The Diagnosis Of Personality Disorders: A Models Comparison Approach, Jeremy Paul Crosby

Clinicians have been found to assign differing personality disorder diagnoses based on the patient's sex, raising concerns of sex bias. However, studies assessing symptom ratings have yielded different results than studies assessing the assignment of diagnoses. The present study utilized both approaches to address sex bias. A national sample (N = 167) of psychologists provided both symptom ratings and diagnoses for two case vignettes meeting minimum DSM-IV criteria for Antisocial and Histrionic personality disorders, and the sex of the patients in the cases was manipulated. The purpose of the present study is to broaden knowledge in the area of adjustment to incarceration. Clemmer (1950) proposed that a process known as prisonization develops as inmates adjust to the arduous circumstance of incarceration. Previous research has compared two competing models of adaptation, known as importation and deprivation, as predictors of prisonization. Given that Clemmer (1950) originally hypothesized that prisonization serves as a method of adjusting to the prison environment, the present study explored the relationships among the importation model, the deprivation model, prisonization, and adjustment. From the inception of philosophical counseling an attempt was made to distinguish it from (psychological) therapy by insisting that therapy could not be more misleading. It is true that philosophical counselors should not pretend to be able to heal major mental illness; nevertheless they do contribute to positive health—health understood as something more than the absence of mental disease. This thesis is developed by critiquing Lou Marinoff’s book, Plato not Prozac!, but also by ranging more widely in the literature on philosophical counseling. I also interpret philosophical counseling as a form of philosophical ethics.
