The Link Between Humor And Personality, Alexander R. Hawley

This study sought to expand upon the research on humor and personality by attempting to find connections between the two through a digital survey. The participants of this study were 51 individuals obtained through social media that were 74.5% women, 23.5% men, and 2% non-binary. The Humor Styles Questionnaire and Midlife Development Inventory were used to assess humor styles and personality factors. Then, a correlation matrix was computed to examine associations between the two sets of variables. Four significant relationships were found: self-enhancing and openness to experience, self-enhancing and extraversion, aggressive and agreeableness, and self-defeating and neuroticism. The emerging psychological field of men and masculinities is credited with the development and validation of an array of instruments to assess masculinity-related constructs, with many emanating from the gender role strain paradigm (GRSP; Levant & Powell, 2017; Levant & Richmond, 2007, 2016; Pleck, 1981, 1995). Personality traits among athletes is a highly researched topic. A primary area of research focuses on studying personality traits in individuals who classify themselves as athletes versus non-athletes and this research shows significant differences between these two groups. Research also shows personality differences between female and male athletes and how these personality differences help each gender cope with injuries in athletics. In addition, research has been completed to support the notion that athletes who participate in different sports contain distinguishing personality traits.
