Accio Empathy: Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire Through The Lens Of Cognitive Literary Studies, Elise Horning

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this thesis, I examined the literariness of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (GF), calling upon research from the field of cognitive literary studies. Cognitive literary studies is a field in academia that merges scholarship from literary studies and psychology, and one of the main goals of this field is to investigate the impact that literature has on the cognitive and emotional development of the reader. A large portion of my thesis project included a close-reading analysis of the chapter “Flesh, Blood, and Bone,” as my goal was to hypothesize whether GF can be classified as …

Social Media's Impact On Compassion, Courtney L. Tulipani

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to understand whether individuals are losing their sense of compassion through the use of using social media. The Empathetic Human: The Story Of How Story Increases Cognitive And Social Ability, Olivia C. Flores

Honor Scholar Theses

This thesis all started from my reflections on being an English Literature major. I mention this not because it is rare or unique, but rather because realizing my interest in literature and considering the cognitive effect it has on humans initiated my current academic endeavor: writing a very, very long paper. Even though the skills English majors exercise seem like the mundane activities of introverted bookworms, these experiences with language are spectacular phenomenons that prove to be, in fact, universal. Many argue that literature has an adaptive function that not only demonstrates why we gravitate toward story and how we …

The Wounded Healer: Finding Meaning In Suffering, Garret B. Wyner Jan 2012

The Wounded Healer: Finding Meaning In Suffering, Garret B. Wyner

Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses

In modern history, no event has more profoundly symbolized suffering than the Holocaust. This novel “Husserlian-realist” phenomenological dissertation elucidates the meaning of existential trauma through an interdisciplinary and psychologically integrative vantage point. I use the testimony of a select group of Holocaust witnesses who committed suicide decades after that event as a lens to examine what their despair may reveal about an unprecedented existential, moral, and spiritual crisis of humanity that threatens to undermine our faith in human history and reality itself. By distinguishing what they actually saw about our condition from what they merely believed about reality, I show …
