The Utility Of A Computerized Assessment Battery To Evaluate Cognitive Functioning And Attention, Carl Richard Ellis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In recent years much attention has been given to the application of computer technology to psychometric methods, but researchers have concentrated on adapting traditional methods of psychological testing to the new technology instead of utilizing it to develop innovative methods of assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a computerized assessment battery designed to evaluate cognitive functioning and attention could demonstrate reliability and validity. The Computerized Cognitive Assessment Battery (CCAB) was developed according to the PASS Model of Cognitive Functioning and administered via a Macintosh computer and test results included response style variables (mouse movement and response …

The sample for this study consisted of 44 adolescent acute care patients in a private psychiatric hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. their length of stay averaged 20.1 days and ranged from 8 to 38 days in the hospital. Each was diagnosed by an accredited psychiatrist or a licensed psychologist as having symptoms of depression or dysthymic disorder. This study used self-report measures of self-esteem, locus of control, and anxiety to contrast the thinking styles of depressed mothers and their children. The resulting profiles were then compared with those of a control group of non-depressed mothers and children in an effort to document differences on the dependent variable measures.;Mothers were admitted to the depressed group if they were currently in treatment for either major depression or dysthymia. Significant depressive symptoms also had to be documented in a self-report depression inventory. Mothers for the control group could have no history of depression or other significant psychiatric disorder.;Children in each …

Therapists' behavior were rated on the following factors: anxiety, responsiveness, immediacy, and genuineness. The results did not indicate any significant differences between therapist's behavior before and after phone interventions, and only modest differences in …

Perceptual-Expectancy Style (Pes) And Pretreatment Adjustment : A Study Of Subtypes Among Male Alcohol Abusers, Jonathan H. Berns

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the possibilties of subtyping inpatient alcohol abusers using three personality constructs: locus of control (LOC), state dependence-state independence (SD-SI), and perceptual expectancy style (PES). PES is formed by an interaction of LOC (measured by I-E) and SD-SI (measured by GEFT); congruent (I-SI and E-SD) and incongruent (E-SI and I-SD) styles result.;A population of male, active-duty military personnel was sampled. Ss evaluated their own level of adjustment using SAS-SR and, when possible, were evaluated by a significant other using KAS-R(,1-3).;It was hypothesized that the independent measures would define subtypes which would be reflected …
