The Effects Of Chlorpromazine On Escape And Avoidance Behavior, Susan E. Bohlmann Lapato

The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a two lever escape avoidance paradigm as a potential drug evaluation procedure. In this procedure responses on one lever postponed the onset of shock for a fixed period of time while responses on the other lever were effective only in terminating shock. This procedure effectively separates the escape and avoidance behaviors of a single organism and should provide a sensitive baseline upon which to measure the specific effects of drugs upon these two behaviors. Avoidance And Escape Responses In A Free Operant Avoidance Procedure As A Function Of Avoidance-Shock Intervals, Kathleen M. Krumhus

Rats were trained on an unsignalled shock procedure, using a two lever apparatus. Responses on one lever postponed the onset of electric shock for a specified time period, the Avoidance-Shock interval. A response on the second lever terminated shock and delayed the onset of the next shock eight seconds, the Escape-Shock interval. Shock was continuous until the subject depressed the second lever. Changes in response rate on both levers were recorded as a function of manipulations of the duration of the Avoidance-Shock interval.
If responses on both bars are summed, data obtained are comparable with findings obtained from the manipulation …

The relationship between baseline response rate and the effect of presenting a stimulus followed by response-independent reinforcement on baseline response rate was investigated in this study. Six pigeons were divided into two equal groups, one of which was conditioned to key peck on a VI-DRH schedule of food reinforcement, the other on a VI-DRL schedule of food reinforcement. Once responding had stabilized, a tone was introduced seven times during each session followed by a response-independent food reinforcement. The results indicated no change in the response rate of the VI-DRH group during the tone, and acceleration of responding during the tone …

The effects of exposure to various climatic conditions were analyzed to determine whether these conditions could produce aggression or facilitate shock-elicited aggression. Paired rats and single monkeys were used as subjects. The effects of independent and simultaneous changes in temperature and relative humidity were investigated in an attempt to produce aggression. Temperature, relative humidity, and length of exposure to climatic conditions were varied to determine if these conditions would facilitate shock-elicited aggression. The climatic conditions investigated were ineffective in reliably producing aggression between rats and also in facilitating shock-elicited aggression with rats and monkey subjects. Gerbils were fed under two different schedules for six weeks after base-line measurement of open-table-top exploratory behavior. One schedule was a variable schedule such that a variable food amount could be administered at any time or place within the S's environment. The other schedule was fixed as to amount of food, time of administration, and feeding area. Separate Ss were utilized under each schedule and total amounts of food per group was equal. Earlier studies using both mice and rats have revealed a significant, positive correlation between preference of alcohol concentration and activity of the liver enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase. In this study two groups of Sprague- Dawley rats, matched for sex, were presented alcohol by either a choice or forced condition for three twelve day periods in a choice-forced-choice or forced-choice-forced sequence. Data were recorded as the amount of alcohol - consumed under each consumption condition. After the rats were sacrificed, their livers were removed and assays were made for the alcohol dehydrogenase activity.
