In this book, the author urges laypersons and professionals to consider the complexities of moral decision making about technology. This paper presents a case study of the steps taken to prioritize academic advising at a small, four-year, liberal arts university. Assessment data from several sources and an advising task force shaped the plan for changing the importance and culture of academic advising within the institution.

Psychosocial And Physical Health Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Six Months Post Roux-En-Y Bariatric Surgery, Alexander L. Patterson

Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular intervention for obesity, and psychologists have seen a growing role in the evaluation of surgery candidates. Studies of pre-surgery psychosocial and physical health variables that are predictive of post-surgical outcome have been inconclusive. In the present study, pre-operative health status, psychological testing results, and support group attendance were measured to determine their relationship with weight-loss outcome at 6 months post-surgery. The Health Perception scale of the Health Status Questionnaire was a significant predictor of weight loss outcome. This suggests that individuals who endorse more negative perceptions of their physical health are more likely to …

This study examined male and female psychologists in academic administrative positions with regard to their perceptions of their own power and their actual power within the administrative hierarchies in which they work. In the past, researchers have compared women and men in academic administrative positions with regard to parity of numbers, salaries, number of publications and citations, types of institutions where they work and, the job titles they hold. These indices had suggested that women administrators had less prestige, control fewer resources, and a more limited scope of job responsibilities than did men. To date, minimal research has addressed the actual services provided to maintain the mental health of leadership in the church. Three major Protestant denominations were consulted within this study, including a total of 434 pastors across the United States. Among these three denominations, a range of services are now being offered to support clergy, with services such as time off, prayer support groups, and clergy retreats among the most valued, adequately provided, and utilized. Still, clergy do not see the provision of services as fully adequate, and report a number of obstacles to utilizing services. Generally, the most highly rated …

Patients with chronic pain continue to seek medical care from emergency departments nationwide despite the fact that an emergency department is a less-than-optimal environment for meeting their specific and specialized needs. As the scientific community has gained a more sophisticated understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of chronic pain, the central role of psychological factors have emerged. Therefore, an ED-based, behavioral health intervention for chronic pain patients is needed to better serve this population and to help hospitals provide cost effective treatment at the appropriate level of care.

Most psychologists seek to control self-disclosures they make to patients, but the Internet’s rapid development and widespread use over the past decade have introduced new problems for psychologists trying to avoid inappropriate disclosures. A total of 695 psychology graduate students and psychologists were surveyed about their current use of social networking Web sites (SNWs), opinions regarding regulation of online activities by the American Psychological Association (APA), and interactions in clinical work as a result of online activities. In response to Porter's article, "Theology as Queen and Psychology as Handmaid," three criteria are offered for theology as science. A scientific theology must be open to new discovery, it requires a community, and it is available for practical application. In addition to the benefits offered by Porter, viewing theology as science can promote practical helping efforts within the church.

Adolescent residential treatment staff members have jobs that are emotionally exhausting, physically taxing and spiritually draining. Good coping skills, including religious/spiritual practices, may reduce burnout. Results from a small rural adolescent residential treatment center indicated a high degree of burnout. Burnout was negatively correlated with existential and religious well-being, stress, income, social support and personal mental health treatment

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common psychiatric diagnosis in childhood that requires a level of attention or hyperactivity that falls short of the expected developmental level. Past research shows cognitive discrepancies in ADHD populations with verbal deficiencies observed primarily in tasks that require a combined auditory and verbal component. Working memory has been a long acknowledged deficit in persons with ADHD. This research examines cognitive differences among children with ADHD on working memory and other components of the Stanford Binet, 5th edition (SB5). Though scientific psychology once attempted to distance itself from religious constructs, times have changed. It now seems clear that the clinical practice of psychology involves metaphysics as well as science (O'donohue, 1989, Jones, 1994). Recent research also shows significant relationships between religion, spirituality and health (Hill and Pargament, 2003, Richards and Bergin, 2005). Yet the body of psycho logy and scholarship largely overlooks the study of sin. As a result, there is a shocking absence of measurement tools for research on perceptions of sin. Since the 1930s, various versions of the Stroop interference task have been used to illuminate how the mind processes information. Over the past 10 years it has been applied to emotion recognition processing in increasingly complex, competing expressions. Koch (2006) used competing emotion words and faces and found the words produced interference in identifying the facial emotion, particularly when they were incongruent and the eyes were removed. Children coping with chronic illnesses employ a variety of strategies to help them defend against their illness-related stressors. In a study of children diagnosed with asthma, Ezop (2002), using the Children’s Religious Coping Scale (CRC), found that the use of positive religious coping techniques led to a better adaptation to life and a more positive perspective on illnesses. The Ezop study also found that children and adolescents used positive religious coping moderately and made only limited use of negative religious coping. The present study analyzed the positive and negative coping skills of adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Specifically, in a prior …
