Comparison Of American And Chinese College Students By Means Of The Holtzman Inkblot Technique, Te Jung Chang

The major purpose of this study was to explore personality differences between American and Chinese college students.

Sixteen American college students and two groups of the same number of their Chinese counterparts, one of the Chinese student groups being in the United States for less than one year and the other group being in the United States for longer than two years, were randomly selected and matched by ages to be the subjects of this study.

This research compares the performance of a group of extraverts to a group of intraverts on a cognitive reasoning task. According to the theory of Hans J. Eysenck, one would expect that the intraverts would perform better than the extraverts on a task of massed reasoning. On the basis of scores on the Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Otis Lennon Mental Ability Test, a sample of 72 Ss were drawn from two undergraduate classes, Principles of Applied Learning and Human Development, at Western Kentucky University. The study was to determine the correlation between a person's investment in society, as measured by economic factors, and a person's liberal attitudes about that society. The attitude areas used to measure liberal-conservative attitudes were political, religious, and moral.

The hypothesis stated that as investment increased, the scale of liberal attitudes in politics, religion, and morals would decrease. A significant negative correlation would support the hypothesis. A significant positive correlation indicated a reverse of the hypothesis, that is an increase in investment showed an increase in liberal attitudes.

This study sought to expand a study by Kamano (1960) to a normal population. In that work, Kamano used the D.A.P. in conjunction with the Semantic Differential. He concluded that the Ss (schizophrenics) analyzed their drawings consistent with their own self concepts. In the present study the relation between Ss ratings of the D.A.P., their self concept, and judges ratings of the drawings were sought. It was predicted that the Ss would rate themselves and the Drawings similarly. This prediction was upheld for the Potency factor. This thesis, presented at Xavier University in 1969, examines Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock" as a significant early step in Greene's development of psychologically complex characterization. Madigan argues that the novel represents the first sustained combination of three elements in Greene's fiction: the "thriller" plot structure, the "Catholic element" as a framework of belief opposing his characters' actions, and genuine psychological depth, distinguishing it from both his earlier thrillers and his lighter "entertainments."

This study was an attempt to help determine whether or not a modified Draw-A-Person test has possibilities for development into an adequate dual-purpose group screening device (intellectual and personality assessment) for psychologists working in educational, guidance, and clinical settings.

The modified DAP test used includes drawings of the same sex, opposite sex, and a self drawing. Scoring procedures are similar to Goodenough's method; however, some modifications were necessary as female drawings were scored frequently.

The historical survey in Goodenough's Measurement of Intelligence by Drawings reviews this area since 1885 and indicates a continued interest of investigators in many parts of the world in the drawings of children. A recurrent theme suggested in most of the published observations was that some characteristics of the drawings were subject to a developmental process and showed significant maturational changes. For many years considerable interest has been shown in spontaneous drawing productions as related to personality study. However, little has been accomplished toward validating this measure as useful in the clinic, and even less has been done to demonstrate its usefulness with "normal" individuals. This study, therefore, is an attempt to determine whether or not certain aspects i.e., the manner in which the arms and hands are represented, in drawings of the human figure will objectively differentiate between social and non-social, "normal" individuals.
