The relationship between democracy and social policy in Southeast Asia is a critical topic that has received insufficient attention. This study aims to describe the efforts of female candidates to break the practice of money politics and the influence of shamans in the 2018 Sriharjo subdistrict election (pilkades). The author used qualitative methods with a case study of the Sriharjo village-head election in Bantul Regency. The author collected primary data through interviews, in-depth group discussions, and observations. Secondary data were collected through a literature review, online articles, photos, and video studies of the pilkades process. Indonesian interagency coordination to prevent terrorist-financing offenses by nonprofit organizations has several drawbacks. This article applies textual analysis and an evidence-based approach to draw effective coordination mechanisms from several countries’ experiences and to design a model of interagency coordination. The model illustrates mechanisms that can be the drivers of changes and minimize ineffective interagency coordination, which may lead to an increase in nonprofit vulnerabilities to terrorist-financing offenses. Evidence drawn from several countries that are contextually relevant to Indonesia, namely, Australia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, illustrates that effective interagency coordination potentially reduces the risks of terrorist financing and has synchronized …

Indonesian overseas elections were first done in 1955. However, Indonesia has lacked specific laws in regards to regulating overseas elections, with almost no distinction between overseas and domestic elections. It has barred the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) from properly conducting simultaneous elections as well as affecting the quality of the elections. Whereas Indonesian elections are traditionally done through paper ballots in which data are collected manually, PPLNs have promoted innovations to overcome challenges. In the study of female activists in politics, the role of women seen from the perspective of women’s representation tends to revolve in political recruitments and decision making process after the elections. This perspective assumes that political process works in a more advanced level by providing channels for female activists to articulate their political interests and thus help with their future endeavors. This research tries to review a number of ideas of some Indonesian scholars such as Yudi Latif, Franz Magnis-Suseno, and Syamsul Ma’arif, who saw and described the relationship between Pancasila and public reason, one of the popular political concepts in political studies. Some Indonesian scholars have linked Pancasila to public reason, with a secular nuance, so that it could potentially be free of religious associations. Is a flourishing civil society’s political activism positively correlated with the deepening of Indonesian democracy? This article addresses this question by examining the role of civil society in the 2014 presidential election in Indonesia, focusing on the collective actions of volunteer groups (known as Gerakan Relawan) that shaped both the election process and its result. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan fenomena praktik politik oligarki dalam pemilihan kepala desa yang memiliki perbedaan pola dengan pemilihan umum di tingkat lokal dan nasional. Dengan metode penelitian kualitatif dan mengambil studi kasus di Desa Tanjung, Kecamatan Pagu, Kabupaten Kediri, penelitian ini menggambarkan bagaimana politik oligarki berbasis sumber daya material gagal memenangkan pemilihan kepala desa Tanjung. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semua calon kepala desa menggunakan sumber daya material selain sumber kekuasaan Jawa yang bersifat spiritual. This article discusses the modality of Yasin Limpo’s family in the 2015 Gowa Regency local election. The modality itself consists of economic, social, cultural, and political capital. This research applies qualitative approach which shows that influential capitals are actually the legacy of resources owned by an influential older member of the family. As he acted as regents in previous terms he controlled resources which in turn signifi¬cantly generate public support to the candidates in the 2015 local election. This article explains how local government can hamper the development of retail net¬work in Padang City. In the case of Padang, the local government in the era of economic decentralization is assumed to encourage openness to investment, instead of using the instrument of authority to block the entry of retail network. This article will outline the factors that can drive the success of a civil society orga¬nization at the village level in influencing decisions by local governments, with case study of the Sekar Mulyo farmer group in Batu City. The question raised is why the Sekar Mulyo farmer group influences the local agriculture and infrastructure policy more successfully in Batu City in 2009-2016. This article uses qualitative approach by using primary and secondary data. The research found that there are determinants of success are collaborative strategies of civil society organizations, social capital, and clientelistic relation.

This study discusses the land grabbing practiced by political oligarchy at the local level after the New Order. By using qualitative research methods and case study in Karawang, this study attempts to describe how political oligarchy allows the expropriation of land at the local level. This study finds that networking power of the oligarchy as a common practice in the New Order regime is still continued and practiced by local authority decades after its fall. This study discusses the role of political actors in Egypt during the transition period leading to the failure of democratic transition in the country.
