Domestic workers are among the most exploited groups, composing 24% of the estimated 45.8 million forced laborers worldwide. The market for domestic workers has expanded especially rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region; in Hong Kong alone, there are currently 360,000 domestic workers—about 10% of Hong Kong’s workforce—mostly originating from the Philippines and Indonesia (Hincks, 2017). 94% of these workers show signs of exploitation or forced labor (Kang, 2017). Venezuela, due to economic and political sabotage, has been experiencing a humanitarian crisis since the late part of 2018. This oil-exporting nation was faced with economic decline after 9/11, the 2008 economic recession and again in 2014; as a result of oil prices tanking. Under Cesar Chavez’s presidency the Venezuelan Bolivar faced destabilizing inflation rates surged in part by the ‘economic war’ against private enterprise and the bourgeoisie class, as well as a lack of diversification of exports and a dependency on imported goods. After Chavez's death in 2013, Nicolás Maduro took office and social unrest intensified.

In previous years, the covering of woman’s hair and/or face was a systemic oppression forced on by a patriarchal government. These women have made efforts to reclaim this clothing by enforcing a choice to wear or to not wear the garment. This dissertation explores the question of why China responded particularly harshly to pro-U.S. military actions taken by South Korea, when this nation was identified as a friend to China, while responding less harshly to similar pro-U.S. military actions taken by Japan, who was not identified as a friend. My argument is that these divergent responses were caused by China’s different expectations, according to whether different nations had a perceived identity as a friend or a rival. State repressions of minority groups threaten human rights, undermining their development and survival. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, countless minority groups found themselves living in a new country as a result of annexation, redefined territorial boundaries and migration, with some suffering repression from the states in which they now resided. This thesis examines the interactions and conditions necessary for such repressions from the state to take place with the central research question: why and how might a state, having just acquired an ethnic or minority group, repress the said group following its acquisition. How does the extent to which rebel organizations are embedded into local conflict contexts - i.e. the extent to which they "fit in" or "stand out" from local populations - affect their behavior on and off the battlefield during civil war? This dissertation examines why rebel group propensities to engage in governance and violence during war vary at the macro and microlevels of analysis and uses as its point of departure the presence of foreign fighters in the ranks of rebel groups engaged in civil war. Counting conservatively, and ignoring physical injuries and mental trauma, data show about 100 million mass atrocity-related deaths since 1900. Occurring in war and in peacetime, and of enormous scale, severity, and brutality, they are geographically widespread, occur with surprising frequency, and can be long-lasting in their adverse effects on economic and human development, wellbeing, and wealth. As such, they are a major economic concern. This article synthesizes very diverse and widely dispersed theoretical and empirical literatures, addressing two gaps: a “mass atrocities gap” in the economics literature and an “economics gap” in mass atrocities scholarship. The purpose of this thesis is to determine how different variables can affect a terrorist group's reaction to a targeted leadership strike, known as a decapitation strike. Decapitation strikes often produce unwanted results, such as a splintering of the terrorist group, or a failure to destroy the group. It is important that we understand which variables can lead to a group's destruction after a decapitation strike, to maximize the decapitation's effectiveness. The rise of Chinese multinational enterprises (CMNEs) and the growth of Chinese outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) have been two important trends in the world economy. This dissertation aims to deliver a complete picture of Chinese OFDI by investigating what determines Chinese OFDI. Based on a perspective of international political economy, we use a multilevel framework which includes country level, industry level, and firm level to demonstrate a reciprocal relationship between the Chinese government’s political benefits and CMNEs’ economic benefits. This paper focuses on different national economic development structures, such as microsmall-medium-enterprises (MSMEs) vs. big or state-owned enterprises and their relations with political development. A well-established literature argues that MSMEs are conducive to economic growth. Existing literature does not tell us much about the relationship between MSMEs and democracy. This dissertation examines the relationship between economic development structure and democracy. I demonstrate that we observe a negative correlation between high concentration of MSMEs and political development in the early stages of a country’s economic development (pre-takeoff or takeoff states stages), ceteris paribus. This article introduces a Thematic Section and theorizes the multiple ways that judicializing international relations shifts power away from national executives and legislatures toward litigants, judges, arbitrators, and other nonstate decision-makers. We identify two preconditions for judicialization to occur—(1) delegation to an adjudicatory body charged with applying designated legal rules, and (2) legal rights-claiming by actors who bring—or threaten to bring—a complaint to one or more of these bodies. We classify the adjudicatory bodies that do and do not contribute to judicializing international relations, including but not limited to international courts. Currently Latin America experiences a phenomenon of widely varying levels of violence across the region. Many countries, such as El Salvador and Honduras, have exceptionally high murder rates upwards of 40 homicides per 100,000 people (UNODC 2015). Other countries, such as Uruguay and Argentina, have relatively low rates, below 10 homicides per 100,000 people (UNODC 2015). สารนิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของการปรับแนวทางการให้ความช่วยเหลืออย่างเป็นทางการ (ODA) ของญี่ปุ่นเมื่อปี ค.ศ.2015 กับการดำเนินยุทธศาสตร์ของญี่ปุ่นในยุครัฐบาลชินโซ อาเบะต่อภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ด้วยกรอบแนวคิดการถ่วงอำนาจแบบใช้ไม้อ่อน (soft balancing) เนื่องจากญี่ปุ่นใช้ ODA เป็นเครื่องมือดำเนินยุทธศาสตร์ต่างประเทศมาตั้งแต่หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ที่เป็นพื้นที่เป้าหมายหลักของ ODA ญี่ปุ่นและมีความสำคัญเชิงยุทธศาสตร์ความมั่นคงและเศรษฐกิจต่อญี่ปุ่น โดยการปรับแนวทาง ODA ของญี่ปุ่นต่อภูมิภาคดังกล่าวเกี่ยวข้องกับการปรับเป้าหมายและแนวทางการดำเนินยุทธศาสตร์ของญี่ปุ่นต่อภูมิภาคในแต่ละช่วงเวลา ซึ่งผลการศึกษาพบว่า รัฐบาลอาเบะใช้ ODA เป็นเครื่องมือสกัดกั้นการขยายอิทธิพลของจีนในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยมุ่งเสริมสร้างความเป็นแกนกลางของอาเซียน (ASEAN Centrality) และศักยภาพด้านการพัฒนาของประเทศในภูมิภาคด้วยการให้ ODA เพื่อให้อาเซียนและประเทศสมาชิกลดการพึ่งพาจีนและรักษาระเบียบของภูมิภาคที่เอื้อต่อผลประโยชน์ของญี่ปุ่น เนื่องจากการผงาดขึ้นมาของจีน โดยเฉพาะการขยายอิทธิพลทางทะเลและยุทธศาสตร์ Belt and Road เป็นประเด็นท้าทายต่อการดำเนินยุทธศาสตร์และอิทธิพลของญี่ปุ่นในภูมิภาค
