Erneuerbare Energien spielen im Kampf gegen die globale Erderwärmung eine Schlüsselrolle. Nur der verstärkte Einsatz von erneuerbaren Energien und die Steigerung von Energieeffizienz werden es ermöglichen, dass die durch klimaschädigende Gase bedingte Erderwärmung kein „gefährliches“ Ausmaß annehmen wird. The Middle East is a demographic time bomb. According to the United Nations De¬velopment Program’s (UNDP) Arab Human Development Report 2002, the population of the Arab region is expected to increase by around 25 percent between 2000 and 2010 and by 50 to 60 percent by 2020—or by perhaps 150 million people, a fig¬ure equivalent to more than two Egypts. Even under the UNDP’s more conserva¬tive scenario, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates will be the only Arab countries in 2020 with median ages above 30. Among the chief contributors to the anthropogenic causes of global climate change are carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. Though the sources of these emissions are clearly identified, global carbon dioxide output from energy generation is still on the rise. Personal media bypass mass media hierarchies, generating a sense of community and proximity. Print “zines” and online “blogs” also serve to culturally and socially distinguish those who produce and consume them. Digital network technology has transformed personal media. For example, blogs enable viewers to add comments, extending the parameters of inclusion. At the same time, instances of exclusion seem to proliferate in the “blogosphere”. The simplification of complex tools makes it ever-more easy to create personal media: hence the multiplication of internal exclusion procedures which serve to differentiate agents equalized by undifferentiated inclusion in dominant networks.

Using the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), the article seeks to evaluate the quality of life in modern Mexico. The GPI employs the same indicators used to arrive at per capita GDP, but adds positive and negative monetary and non-monetary actors that affect people's lives. Monetary factors include income distribution, increased health care cost due to air and water pollution, and loss of wetlands. Non-monetary factors involve parenting, time spent in highways, loss of leisure time, the cost of volunteer work, and other social costs. Microfinance is emerging as an integral part of the new development paradigm, described by the phrase "participation and development.
