The progression of human civilization sits at the crossroads. Fueled by an emphasis in recent decades on interdependence, the world has realigned its economic and political operations to an international scale. Couple this development with grand advancements made in technology which have served to unite the world, and human civilization has set off on a path that leads to further integration. What is needed, however, is a realization of the inherent benefits that would come from the creation of a capitalistic world federal system.

Nationalism--one of the most salient forces working within the contemporary system of states--is on the rise, and no state is immune. Contemporary nationalism is fundamentally different from that which first appeared on the political scene more than two centuries ago. In the international system, state sovereignty is recognized over the right of self-determination of nations Since the right of self-determination is incompatible with sovereignty, changes must be made. Some nations work toward receiving a voice or gaining greater autonomy; others clamor for secession. It is the latter which poses the greatest threat to peace and international stability. As the United States moves from being a predominantly biracial to a multiracial society, racial attitudes continue to become more diverse and more complex. Scholars need to address these changes not only in terms of black and white Americans, but also how these changes involve and affect other racial groups, particularly Asian and Hispanic Americans. This inquiry looks at some of these complexities by examining how social construction differentials in the minds of white Americans affect their attitudes toward the issues of equal opportunity and multiculturalism. With the great increase in the number of violent crimes committed by juveniles, the rights of their victims are greatly overlooked by a. judicial system which does not meet the changing needs of society. Violent juvenile crime has transformed completely over the years in frequency. in the types of acts committed, and in the profiles of the perpetrators. Great changes in federal and state laws concerning the treatment of such violent youths are taking place; however, nothing is currently being done to ensure the rights of the victims of juveniles. These aspects of the judicial system are explored.

Attitudes Towards The Market And The State In Post-Communist Europe, David S. Mason

This paper examines the level and sources of suppon for the market-oriented reforms in East-Central Europe and the relationship between these attitudes and political trust in the governments. The analysis is based on data collected in a common public opinion survey on social, economic and political justice implemented in the spring and summer of 1991 in eleven countries: Russia. Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany (east and west), Holland, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States.

The survey results suggest some measure of caution and concern regarding the possibilities for a successful transition to market democracy in the former …

A substantial literature on lower federal courts and state courts suggests that the "haves" usually come out ahead in litigation because they possess superior resources for it and they reap advantages from their repeat player status. We investigate the success of 10 categories of litigants before the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist Courts to determine whether the resources or experience of litigants has effects on Supreme Court outcomes paralleling those found in the courts below. While different categories of litigants are found to have very different rates of success, those differences do not consistently favor litigants with greater resources. A time …

Texts designed to introduce political science students to the history of political thought or to past political theories have been commonplace in the discipline, as have disputes about their pedagogical utility or justifiability, and methodological debates concerning their adequacy or legitimacy. In an effort to address these disputes and some of these debates, I construct three models of historiographical inquiry. Each model represents a particular approach, and each is defined in terms of three common features. Even though the significance of Brown v. Board of Education is recognized by almost everyone, implementing the decision has been a very difficult task. Implementation of the resulting desegregation order in Dallas has been influenced by the national response to desegregation as well as by local conditions and responses. The purpose of this study is to analyze those factors which influenced implementation. A history of the fight for public school desegregation up to, and including, the Brown decision, is given as background and to help understand why implementation was so difficult. This paper examines, through secondary research, the concept of industrial democracy and how it has been applied in several different counties. A brief explanation of industrial democracy introduces the paper, followed by an examination of its application in selected countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, South American and the United States. Because the codes, rules and ideology of mass. single-party systems reach the village areas more slowly than do the tangible personalizations of party authority, a situation of potential misuse of power exists where rural party organizations operate. Peasants are aware of face-to face confrontations by a familiar figure who has gained a party position; they are unaware of the precepts and regulations that the national party has laid down for the village level functionaries. Consequently, political victimization is most pronounced at the very grass-root level that national leaders are attempting to integrate politically. Moreover, by its nature the rural party …

The election defeat of a national Cabinet Minister in Rungwe West Constituency marked one of the most dramatic events of the 1965 Tanzania elections. Jeremiah S. Kasambala, the Minister for Industries. Mineral Resources and Power and a well-established political figure, was defeated at the polls by an unknown clerk from the local District Council. At first glance the outcome might scem due to a voting pattern which followed tribal lines: two small ethnic groups simply combined to defeat a member of the Nyakyusa people who predominate in the District.
