การเล่นพนันออนไลน์บนแอปพลิเคชันโทรศัพท์มือถือในกลุ่มผู้สูงอายุ, ประชาธิป กะทา

งานวิจัยมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อศึกษาลักษณะพฤติกรรมการเล่นพนันออนไลน์บนแอปพลิเคชันโทรศัพท์มือถือในกลุ่มผู้สูงอายุ ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ทำให้ผู้สูงอายุเกิดแรงจูงใจในการเล่นพนันออนไลน์บนโทรศัพท์มือถือ และผลกระทบด้านต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นกับผู้สูงอายุที่นิยมเล่นพนันออนไลน์ งานวิจัยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาในกลุ่มผู้สูงอายุหลากหลายกลุ่มที่เล่นพนันออนไลน์ งานวิจัยมีข้อค้นพบสำคัญ คือ ผู้สูงอายุที่เล่นพนันออนไลน์สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 กลุ่มใหญ่ ได้แก่ 1) กลุ่มผู้สูงอายุที่นิยมเล่นการพนันเป็นทุนเดิมอยู่แล้ว 2) กลุ่มผู้สูงอายุที่ไม่เคยเล่นการพนันอย่างจริงจังมาก่อน แต่เล่นพนันออนไลน์ด้วยเหตุผลว่ามีเวลาว่างและคาดหวังรายได้เพิ่ม ปัจจัยที่สร้างแรงจูงใจมีอยู่ 4 ปัจจัยหลัก คือ 1) ความชื่นชอบเล่นพนันเป็นทุนเดิม 2) วิถีชีวิตของผู้สูงอายุ 3) รายได้ที่ลดลงหลังเกษียณ 4) กลยุทธ์การตลาด ส่วนผลกระทบด้านต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นกับผู้สูงอายุที่นิยมเล่นพนันออนไลน์ ผู้สูงอายุประเมินตนเองว่าไม่ได้รับผลกระทบรุนแรงที่ชัดเจน มีผู้สูงอายุจำนวนน้อยได้รับผลกระทบด้านจิตใจและความสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัว

บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาระดับการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมและการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุในเขตพื้นที่เทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี 2) ศึกษาการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมที่ส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุในเขตพื้นที่เทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี 3) เสนอแนวทางการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมที่เหมาะสมต่อการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุในเขตพื้นที่เทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยแบบผสมผสานวิธี ในเชิงปริมาณ กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ ผู้สูงอายุในเขตเทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี จำนวน 374 คน ด้วยตัวอย่างแบบแบ่งชั้น เครื่องมือที่ใช้ คือ แบบสอบถาม สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และการวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุคูณแบบขั้นตอน ส่วนวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพใช้แบบ สัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกกับผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ จำนวน 20 คน โดยเลือกแบบเจาะจงจากปลัดเทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี เจ้าหน้าที่กองสวัสดิการสังคมเทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี และตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุในชุมชน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) การจัดสวัสดิการสังคมผู้สูงอายุและผลการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุโดยภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก 2) ปัจจัยทางการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมที่ส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุในเขตพื้นที่เทศบาลเมืองเพชรบุรี จังหวัดเพชรบุรี มีค่าสัมประสิทธิ์ถดถอย (R) = 0.728 ซึ่งส่งทางบวกทุกตัว มีประสิทธิภาพในการทำนาย ร้อยละ 53.10 นำมาเขียนเป็นสมการถดถอยได้ดังนี้ tot = 0.271 (X4) + 0.241 (X3) + 0.143 (X2) และ 3) แนวทางการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมที่เหมาะสมต่อการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตผู้สูงอายุ คือ 1) ควรส่งเสริมกิจกรรมการสร้างสายสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัว 2) ควรจัดตั้งศูนย์บริการผู้สูงอายุเพื่อแก้ปัญหาผู้สูงอายุที่อยู่ลำพัง 3) ควรจัดตั้งศูนย์เพื่อดูแลผู้สูงอายุที่ไม่สามารถช่วยเหลือตัวเองได้ และ 4) ควรจัดกิจกรรมที่สอดคล้องกับความต้องการของแต่ละช่วงอายุ

การเข้าถึงบริการด้านสุขภาพและความต้องการในวาระท้ายของผู้ต้องขังสูงวัยในเรือนจำ, ปริญญา หวันเหล็ม, ภาวิกา ศรีรัตนบัลล์

บทความฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสภาวะของบริการด้านสุขภาพ และการเข้าถึงของระบบราชทัณฑ์ไทยในการดูแลแบบประคับประคองและการดูแลในวาระท้าย โดยอาศัยแนวคิดสิทธิมนุษยชน สิทธิผู้ต้องขัง แนวคิดการดูแลแบบประคับประคอง และกรอบข้อบังคับระดับสากลและข้อกฎหมายระดับประเทศ ทั้งนี้ ยังมุ่งศึกษาแนวทางการให้บริการด้านสุขภาพในมิติของการดูแลในระยะท้าย ความต้องการของผู้ต้องขังสูงวัยในเรือนจำ และรูปแบบการจัดการกับการตายในเรือนจำ ผ่านกลไกของราชทัณฑ์ไทยที่มีทีมสหวิชาชีพต่าง ๆ เข้ามาให้บริการผู้ต้องขังในระยะท้าย การศึกษาครั้งนี้อาศัยการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ และมีข้อค้นพบประการสำคัญว่า สภาพความเป็นอยู่ของผู้ต้องขังป่วยต้องเผชิญความยากลำบากในเรือนจำ ซึ่งส่งผลให้เกิดความเสี่ยงต่อความเจ็บป่วยได้ง่าย สภาพแวดล้อมของเรือนจำไม่สอดรับกับวัยสูงอายุ อย่างไรก็ตาม ผู้ต้องขังสูงวัยในวาระท้ายของชีวิตได้รับบริการทางการแพทย์ที่มีมาตรฐานสากลเทียบเท่าการรักษาในโรงพยาบาลภายนอก ด้วยทีมสหวิชาชีพที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญ ทั้งยังมีบริการระบบการให้เยี่ยมออนไลน์สำหรับผู้ต้องขังในวาระท้ายในเรือนจำ และความต้องการในวาระสุดท้ายของชีวิตผู้ต้องขังในเรือนจำ คือ การได้ “กลับบ้าน” ที่นับเป็นข้อค้นพบสำคัญ และเป็นความหวังสุดท้ายก่อนสิ้นลมหายใจ

งานศึกษานี้ประเมินค่าตัวคูณทางการคลังโดยอาศัยกระบวนการทางเศรษฐมิติที่เป็นที่ยอมรับวงกว้างในปัจจุบัน โดยทดลองใช้ข้อมูลสะท้อนการใช้จ่ายของรัฐบาลที่แตกต่างกัน 5 ลักษณะ งานศึกษาพบว่าค่าตัวคูณการใช้จ่ายของรัฐบาลอยู่ที่ 0.25-0.49 ซึ่งมีค่าต่ำกว่า 1 อย่างชัดเจน ค่าตัวคูณดังกล่าวสะท้อนความไม่มีประสิทธิภาพของมาตรการกระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจของประเทศไทย ซึ่งเป็นประเทศเศรษฐกิจเปิดขนาดเล็กและมีสัดส่วนของภาคเศรษฐกิจนอกระบบในระดับสูง ทั้งนี้ ค่าตัวคูณการใช้จ่ายของรัฐบาลดังกล่าวประเมินขึ้นจากข้อมูลการเบิกจ่ายงบประมาณประจำปีของรัฐบาลที่มิได้คำนวณรวมการเบิกจ่ายงบประมาณในส่วนของการชำระคืนต้นเงินกู้และรายจ่ายเพื่อชดใช้เงินคงคลัง/ชดใช้ทุนสำรองจ่าย ซึ่งมีความสอดคล้องการดำเนินมาตรการรักษาเสถียรภาพทางเศรษฐกิจของรัฐบาลในทางปฏิบัติมากกว่าข้อมูลที่ถูกนำมาใช้ประเมินค่าตัวคูณทางการคลังในงานศึกษาในอดีต

การสังเคราะห์ภาวะความเป็นเจ้าบ้านบนพื้นฐานของการวิจัยสังคมเชิงประจักษ์ : กรณีศึกษามุมมองเกี่ยวกับผู้อพยพเข้ามาในพื้นที่ปลายทางยอดนิยมของทวีปยุโรป, ศิริพงศ์ ปาลกะวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา

จุดมุ่งหมายหลักของงานวิจัยนี้คือการสังเคราะห์นิยามและองค์ประกอบของแนวคิด “ภาวะความเป็นเจ้าบ้าน” ซึ่งมีรากฐานจากผลการวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์เชิงพหุระหว่างทัศนคติต่อผู้อพยพเข้ามาในประเทศของตนกับภูมิหลังทางประชากร การเมือง และสังคม ของเจ้าบ้านในพื้นที่ปลายทางยอดนิยมของทวีปยุโรป โดยใช้ข้อมูลจากฐานข้อมูลการสำรวจทางสังคมชาวยุโรป ผลการสังเคราะห์แสดงให้เห็นว่าภาวะความเป็นเจ้าบ้านคือภาวะทางจิตสังคมอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นทั้งสำนึกร่วมทางสังคมและความพึงพอใจส่วนบุคคลในฐานะเจ้าบ้าน เกี่ยวกับการยึดถือและปฏิบัติตามเป้าหมายและแนวปฏิบัติว่าด้วยการอาศัยอยู่ร่วมกับผู้อื่นในสังคมอย่างสันติ เพื่อนำไปสู่การเปิดใจยอมรับและให้การต้อนรับผู้อพยพอย่างมีไมตรีจิต นอกจากนี้ บุคคลที่มีทัศนคติเชิงบวกต่อผู้อพยพหรือมีภาวะความเป็นเจ้าบ้านอย่างเด่นชัด ประกอบด้วยคุณสมบัติสำคัญ 6 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) การมีส่วนร่วมทางการเมือง 2) การได้รับการตอบสนองความต้องการพื้นฐานอย่างเพียงพอ 3) การมีทักษะการคิดเชิงวิพากษ์อย่างรอบด้าน ตลอดจนรู้เท่าทันอารมณ์และความรู้สึก 4) การคำนึงถึงผลประโยชน์สาธารณะและผลประโยชน์ส่วนตัวอย่างสมดุล 5) การไม่ยึดติดกับอัตลักษณ์ของตน/พวกพ้องมากเกินไป และ 6) การมีความเห็นอกเห็นใจ/เข้าใจความรู้สึกของผู้อื่น รวมถึงมีมนุษยธรรมและให้ความสนใจแก่สิ่งรอบตัว

วัฏจักรแห่งอำนาจกับวิถีทางการเมืองของชาวสิงคโปร์เชื้อสายอินเดีย ภายใต้นโยบายพหุวัฒนธรรม, อภิรัฐ คำวัง

บทความวิชาการนี้เป็นการศึกษาอิสระ ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์ชาวสิงคโปร์เชื้อสายอินเดียในฐานะชุมชนลำดับที่ 3 ภายใต้บริบทนโยบายพหุวัฒนธรรม โดยศึกษาบูรณาการด้านประวัติศาสตร์ สังคมวัฒนธรรม และรัฐศาสตร์ มุ่งพิจารณาถึงการเลือกตั้งทั่วไปกับการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดี ผลการศึกษาในครั้งนี้ได้แสดงให้เห็นว่า ก) สิงคโปร์เปิดพื้นที่เชิงอำนาจทางการเมืองการปกครอง เชื้อสายอินเดียได้เข้าถึงอำนาจฝ่ายนิติบัญญัติผ่านการเลือกตั้งทั่วไป ระบบกำหนดให้มีเขตเลือกตั้งแบบรายกลุ่มที่มีเชื้อสายอินเดียเป็นสมาชิก (ตั้งแต่ ค.ศ. 1988) ในปัจจุบันสังกัดอยู่ในทั้งฝ่ายรัฐบาลและฝ่ายค้าน แต่การสร้างกลุ่มที่มีเชื้อสายตามอุดมการณ์และดำเนินตามนโยบายก็เป็นเรื่องยาก ข) ชุมชนเชื้อสายอินเดียมีประวัติศาสตร์ที่ได้เข้าถึงตำแหน่งระดับสูงในฝ่ายรัฐบาล และการได้เข้าถึงตำแหน่งที่มีอำนาจสูงสุดห้าในหกตำแหน่ง นั่นคือ ประธานาธิบดี รัฐมนตรีอาวุโส รองนายกรัฐมนตรี หัวหน้าผู้พิพากษาสูงสุด และประธานรัฐสภา อย่างไรก็ดี ชาวสิงคโปร์เชื้อสายอินเดียยังไม่ได้เข้าถึงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ซึ่งเชื้อสายจีนมีจารีตสืบทอดในตำแหน่งนี้มาโดยตลอด

ความเป็นธรรมทางดิจิทัล เป็นประเด็นที่ไม่ได้ถูกกล่าวถึงมากนักในประเทศไทย ถึงแม้ว่าเป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งในการเกิดความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคม โดยเฉพาะเรื่องการเข้าถึงข้อมูลข่าวสาร บริการ และสวัสดิการสังคมขั้นพื้นฐานของรัฐที่ประชาชนควรได้รับ ส่วนใหญ่เมื่อนึกถึงเรื่องความเหลื่อมล้ำในสังคม ผู้คนมักกล่าวถึงความเหลื่อมล้ำทางเศรษฐกิจและความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคมในภาพกว้าง ในขณะที่ความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคมถูกซ่อนไว้ในทุกมิติของชีวิต ดังนั้น การกล่าวถึงประเด็นชี้เฉพาะเรื่อง “ความเป็นธรรมทางดิจิทัลด้านสื่อและเทคโนโลยี” จึงมีไม่มากนัก นับว่าเป็นช่องว่างขององค์ความรู้ทางวิชาการที่ควรศึกษาทำความเข้าใจเพิ่มเติม พร้อมทั้งหาแนวทางแก้ไขอย่างเร่งด่วนเพื่อจัดสวัสดิการที่เป็นธรรมให้แก่สมาชิกในสังคมอย่างทั่วถึง โดยเฉพาะประชากรกลุ่มหลักที่จะกล่าวถึงในบทความนี้ นั่นคือ กลุ่มผู้สูงอายุ เพื่อเป็นการเปิดมุมมองทัศนคติที่หลากหลายและกว้างขวางขึ้น อีกทั้งยังช่วยลดวยาคติ (ageism) ของผู้คนในสังคมที่มีความเชื่อว่า ผู้สูงอายุเป็นกลุ่มวัยที่ล้าหลัง และตีตรา (stigma) ว่าเป็นกลุ่มประชากรที่ใช้งานสื่อเทคโนโลยีไม่เป็น ในขณะที่สถานการณ์สังคมปัจจุบันมิได้เป็นเช่นนั้นอีกต่อไป ซึ่งจากข้อมูลที่ผู้เขียนได้ร่วมกันศึกษาวิจัยในประเด็นนี้ ทำให้ค้นพบองค์ความรู้ชุดใหม่ที่แสดงให้เห็นว่ามีผู้สูงอายุเป็นจำนวนมากที่สามารถใช้สื่อเทคโนโลยีได้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว ชำนาญ และหมั่นพัฒนาทักษะตนเอง ศึกษาหาความรู้อยู่เสมอ เพื่อให้รู้เท่าทันสถานการณ์โลกที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ในทางตรงข้าม มีผู้สูงอายุจำนวนไม่น้อยเช่นกันที่ยังขาดความรู้และทักษะใช้งานสื่อเทคโนโลยีในชีวิตประจำวัน ทำให้พวกเขาถูกตัดขาดจากสังคมบางกลุ่มไปโดยปริยาย รวมทั้งไม่สามารถเข้าถึงข้อมูลข่าวสารและสวัสดิการของภาครัฐได้

การเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคมภาคเกษตรกับเส้นทางสู่ความยากจนข้ามรุ่น: กรณีศึกษาครัวเรือนเกษตรกรจังหวัดอำนาจเจริญ, ปิ่นวดี ศรีสุพรรณ

เกษตรกรถูกระบุว่าเป็นกลุ่มอาชีพที่ประสบปัญหาความยากจนมากที่สุดในประเทศไทย โดยเฉพาะครัวเรือนในชนบทซึ่งมีรายได้น้อย บทความนี้วิเคราะห์การเลื่อนชั้นของเกษตรกรในสังคมชนบทผ่านกรณีศึกษาครัวเรือนเกษตรกร โดยการถกเถียงกับแนวคิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคมภาคเกษตรที่ส่งผลต่อการเลื่อนชั้นทางสังคมและความยากจนข้ามรุ่น พบว่าครัวเรือนยากจนมีความพยายามในการยกระดับฐานะทางสังคมให้มีความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีขึ้น ทว่าแต่ละครัวเรือนก็มีข้อจำกัดและเงื่อนไขในการเลื่อนชั้นทางสังคมที่แตกต่างกันท่ามกลางการเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคมภาคเกษตรที่โอกาส ทรัพยากร และเงินทุน รวมถึงช่องทางการศึกษาของบุตรหลานเป็นเงื่อนไขในการตัดสินใจด้านการพัฒนาครัวเรือน นอกจากปัจจัยส่วนบุคคลแล้ว ปัจจัยเชิงโครงสร้างมีความสำคัญต่อการวิเคราะห์ผลกระทบต่อความยากจนของเกษตรกร และปัญหาด้านการผลิตซ้ำนโยบายที่ส่งผลให้เกิดความยากจนมักจะไม่ได้รับความสนใจในการเป็นข้อถกเถียงในเชิงนโยบาย

การเมืองและยุทธศาสตร์ของการรวมกลุ่มชาวนา : จาก “นาแปลงใหญ่” สู่ความยืดหยุ่นด้วย “กลุ่มขนาดย่อม, วีระ หวังสัจจะโชค

บทความวิจัยนี้ศึกษาความยืดหยุ่นปรับตัวของชาวนาต่อบทบาทของรัฐในการส่งเสริมการรวมกลุ่ม ผ่านนโยบายนาแปลงใหญ่และการตั้งศูนย์เรียนรู้การเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการผลิตสินค้าเกษตร (ศพก.) ว่า การรวมกลุ่มของชาวนาผ่านนโยบายนาแปลงใหญ่มีการเมืองและยุทธศาสตร์ตอบสนองต่อนโยบายรัฐในมิติของตัวเอง ผ่านการแย่งชิงทรัพยากรและงบประมาณของรัฐ โดยดำเนินการวิจัยด้วยวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ อย่างการสำรวจเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ และการจัดเสวนากลุ่ม โดยใช้กรณีศึกษา 5 พื้นที่ในจังหวัดพิษณุโลก ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ชาวนามีความยืดหยุ่นปรับตัวต่อนโยบายรวมกลุ่มของรัฐ ทำให้เกิดการรวมกลุ่มในมิติที่หลากหลายและไม่ได้เป็นไปตามเป้าหมายของรัฐ จนอาจกล่าวได้ว่า การรวมกลุ่มของนโยบาย “นาแปลงใหญ่” เกิดผลลัพธ์ที่ไม่ตั้งใจ กลับทำให้เกิดการรวมกลุ่ม “ขนาดย่อม” ของชาวนา เพราะสอดคล้องกับการปรับตัวและผลประโยชน์ของกลุ่มขนาดย่อมที่เห็นชัดเจนมากกว่ากลุ่มขนาดใหญ่ ด้วยการรวมกลุ่มขยาดย่อมสามแนวทาง ประกอบด้วย (1) การรวมกลุ่มขนาดย่อมด้วย “ความจำเป็น” ทางวิถีการผลิต การตลาด และสังคม (2) การรวมกลุ่มด้วยยุทธศาสตร์ในการช่วงชิงทรัพยากรและผลประโยชน์จากภาครัฐ และ (3) การปรับตัวสู่การรวมกลุ่ม เพื่อสร้างฐานทางการเมืองท้องถิ่นและการเคลื่อนไหวทางสังคม

This study used a qualitative case study analysis to answer the following research question: How are governments in the Global South tackling the challenge of preserving UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the face of climate change? This was done by investigating the adaptive capacity of the Chan Chan Archeological Site in Trujillo, Peru. The adaptive capacity of the site was evaluated using an adaptive capacity analytical framework that is composed of four determinants: learning capacity, room of autonomous change and access to information, access to resources, and leadership. To explore middle-power strategies, this policy paper examines the emerging bilateral defense partnership between Australia and the Philippines, scheduled for signing in 2026. Both Australia and the Philippines, as mutual defense partners to the United States, are faced with insecurity given the second Trump administration's comments towards a strict “America first” policy. Faced with constant threat from Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea, the Philippines, in particular, is vulnerable if America withdraws its military support. In 20th century Pahlavi Iran, Reza Shah and Mohammad Reza Shah instrumentalized the ‘woman question’ — women’s political, economic, and professional roles in a changing society — to consolidate their power and promote a modern state. Reza Shah utilized top-down and coercive reforms, including veiling and education, to strengthen his power, weaken religious influence, and create a visible national identity. In contrast, his son, Mohammad Reza Shah, instrumentalized gender issues and tied women’s rights to his personal image of progressivism. European right-wing populist (RWP) parties are increasingly touting their attention to women’s issues and representation, and this has coincided with stronger electoral performances. Thus, the following puzzles emerge: how have RWP parties harnessed gender frames, issue salience, and women’s representation as part of a mainstreaming process, and through what mechanisms are these strategies resonating with voters? I address these questions by comparing France’s Rassemblement National (RN) and Italy’s Fratelli d’Italia (FdI), tracing their developments from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. This dissertation comprises three essays that examine critical aspects of public and nonprofit financial management, focusing on interorganizational relationships, local government influence, and financial reserve management in times of crisis.

The first essay examines how interorganizational relationships, specifically nonprofit organizations’ board interlocks, relate to their financial distress, depending on the temporal and spatial contexts. Organization-level fixed-effects regression analysis with Kentucky nonprofits from 2018 to 2022 shows that nonprofits with board interlocks in urban areas were less likely to experience financial distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. I suggest that board interlock acts as an adaptive buffering tool that helps manage resource …

The question pursued in my research paper is this: Does the proliferation of extreme political discourse fuel party polarization along party lines in the United States? I hypothesize that the greater the number and the more extreme the tone of political statements made by powerful figures within a party, the greater the level of polarization between and within the parties. In drought-prone regions of Eastern Ethiopia, recurring droughts profoundly reshape everyday life in ways that deepen existing gendered inequalities. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Fedis district, including semi-structured interviews with women, project implementers, and government officials, as well as group discussions with community members, this study explores how women experience, navigate, and resist the gendered impacts of drought. By attending to the sociopolitical dynamics of drought and the development interventions that accompany it, I analyze how these forces restructure labor, land, food systems, and authority in ways that reproduce and exacerbate existing inequalities. Cults are typically associated with fringe religious or spiritual movements rather than political causes. Yet as American politics increasingly supplants religion as a central source of identity and belonging, our political culture has taken on more cult-like characteristics. This thesis develops a framework for identifying political cults by synthesizing scholarly work on ideological totalism, psychological manipulation, and group dynamics. It then applies this framework to assess the rise of anti-Israel protests on U.S. college campuses in the wake of the October 7th terrorist attack. The relative education model holds that educational attainment reflects existing socioeconomic advantages that are associated with participation rather than spurring political participation on its own. Yet, emerging research on compensation effects suggests that greater educational attainment leads to increased political engagement among more marginal populations in which political socialization is less likely to occur outside of schools. We argue that the relative education model will better describe the relationship between education and voting patterns among more advantaged groups. Malaysia’s economic growth and democratisation since 2003 have vaulted it into the ranks of the middle powers in the international system. However, Malaysia remains hesitant about its middle power status. It has assumed a counterhegemonic or pro-multipolarity role; it has supported some new international rules and institutions; it leads regional governance institutions; and it advocates for small countries on development issues. In popular lore, the failure of Canada’s once-biggest company, Dome Petroleum, was caused by the interventionist policies of the federal government or its misadventures drilling for oil in the Arctic. But these factors acted in varied ways on the company. Rather, corporate finance theories offer more insight into the dynamics that led to Dome’s takeover by the American oil major Amoco in 1988. Dome was unique in its unwillingness to issue new share capital during its growth phase and instead relied on easy debt financing. This study investigates the low political participation of Latinos in the United States, focusing on the strategies used by political parties, campaigns and non-partisan organization to increase voter turnout, as well as the mechanisms through which these strategies affect voting behavior. Current theories of political mobilization provide a solid foundation; however, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms that drive mobilization within the Latino electorate. Objectives: To investigate whether the 2021 U.S. presidential inauguration contributed to a widening of partisan divides in COVID-19 vaccine attitudes and uptake. Methods: We leverage the presidential inauguration as a natural experiment and analyze data from the Household Pulse Survey and CDC vaccination records. Using a difference-in-differences framework with continuous treatment, we examine how the transition differentially affected state-level vaccine refusal rates and county-level vaccination rates, based on varying levels of partisanship as measured by the Trump-Biden vote gap. Results: Following Biden's inauguration, vaccine refusal declined more in pro-Biden states. Distrust in government and vaccines accounted for approximately 80% of …
