Anti-Transgender Legislation And State Legislature Demographics, Sophie Christensen

Introduction

Anti-transgender legislation has been introduced in state legislatures at exponentially increasing rates over the past five years. 85 bills were introduced in 2020, climbing rapidly to 692 in 2024. As of April 3, 2025, 830 bills have already been introduced in 2025.*

Studies show that this legislation is harmful to the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender youth, even if bills are only introduced. This project seeks to understand the demographic factors of legislatures introducing and passing this legislation to assist advocates in electing legislators who will fight this legislation.

Background

Three of the Founding Fathers wrote the Federalist Papers in order to gain support for and explain the new system of government.

• The Federalist Papers provide valuable insight into the original meaning of the Constitution.

• Supreme Court Justices often look to the Federalist Papers when making decisions but do not always come to the same understanding.

• In Printz v. United States (1997), both the Supreme Court’s majority and dissenting opinions used Federalist No. 27 to support their arguments.

Background

During the Arab Spring in 2011, youth became the backbone of protests and a force for democratic change. Particularly in Tunisia – the heart of the Spring– youth had a dominant role in starting protests and toppling regimes. Extant literature's mixed findings on wealth’s positive association with democratization processes suggest democracy’s support depends on public opinion and age. Building off fieldwork and interviews with students in Tunisia, my study focuses on economic development and its impact on public opinion.

The Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, introduced in Ghana in 2017, marked a major shift in educational access by removing financial barriers at the secondary level. While several studies have examined its implementation and socio-economic impacts, limited attention has been given to its political consequences, particularly among young voters. This study examines the impact of the FSHS policy on the voting decisions of university students in the 2024 general elections. However, significant attention has not been granted to the causes and consequences of this shift on rhetoric surrounding immigration. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the access to abortion that had been established with Roe v Wade. As a result, states had autonomy to make statewide policies on this issue. Some states chose complete bans, some partial bans, and others provided continuing access to abortion. This article explores the dueling referenda of 2022 and 2023 in Kentucky and Ohio, respectively, following the Dobbs decision in 2022. Voters in both states voted to continue to permit abortion access in their states, yet access in each state is different. Profit Shifting And Tax Avoidance: Evidence From Us Multinational Enterprises, Dimitris Giakoulas, Kostas Gemenis, Nikolaos Daskalakis

In this paper, we investigate tax avoidance of MNEs through profit shifting to tax havens. Using macro data from US MNEs, we analyze at the host country level where US affiliates book their profits and where their actual production activities take place. We find that the effect of the corporate tax on excess profits is conditional on whether the host country is considered to be a tax haven. Among tax haven host countries, a difference of 1% in the corporate tax is associated with a change of 8-15% in excess profits, while the relationship between corporate tax and excess profits …

In Ohio, where are women more – or less – likely to serve in public office? The pipeline theory suggests that we should see a pyramid shape in women’s representation, with more women at lower levels of the political career ladder, particularly in local and county-level offices, and fewer women as we move up the hierarchy. With original data for over 6500 seats, we explore the presence of women serving in legislative office at the local, state, and federal level in Ohio. We investigate the effects of cosmopolitan and traditional county features on the opposition to three successful liberal state-wide initiatives on abortion and recreational marijuana using county-level data. Cosmopolitan/traditional variables include urban/rural living patterns, college graduates, average income and religiosity while control variables include turnout, poverty, race, region, and union support. We observe the results of these three elections to see the relationship between vote shares and factors such as income, education, rural/urban, and religiosity, controlling for other factors. What factors are associated with social workers’ political participation, and how does political confidence mediate those relationships? To answer this question, data were collected in 2020 through an original online survey of members of the U.S.-based National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Informed by self-efficacy theory, researchers conducted a structural equation modeling (SEM) path model with political participation as the outcome variable, and political confidence as a mediating variable. Exogenous variables included: one’s self-reported political orientation, belief that social work has a political mandate, gender, and knowledge about how to effectively participate in politics. Vaccine hesitancy is a term that has entered the spotlight since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. With concerns about efficacy, safety, and individual choice, many people have developed a hesitancy toward receiving any vaccine, creating concerns for public and global health. Through responses from local and state health departments about their actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and through analysis of state vaccine rates based on political affiliation, this study suggests that vaccine hesitancy is a current issue that is likely politically motivated. This thesis explores how presidential crisis rhetoric shapes public understanding of democracy in the twenty-first century. Through a comparative analysis of George W. Bush’s address following the September 11 attacks and Donald Trump’s speech at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it examines how presidents construct national identity, justify political action, and frame civic participation. Drawing from classical rhetorical theory, Bitzer’s rhetorical situation, Burke’s dramatistic pentad, and McGee’s theory of “the people,” the study argues that crisis rhetoric is not simply a reaction to events but a means of redefining the crisis. The care crisis stems from the social prescription of women as caregivers, leading to their overrepresentation in unpaid care work. Unpaid is linked to broader structural crises like economic inequality, poverty, and precarity, which are exacerbated by intersecting inequalities. The care crisis perpetuates women’s marginalization in economic and social spheres due to the invisibility of care work in the care economy. The care economy includes non-market and market-based care provision, involving public investments in social infrastructure and protection. According to the International Labour Organization, women perform 76.2% of all unpaid care work globally, dedicating 3.2 times more hours than men. …

This dissertation tackles a central puzzle regarding the recurring legitimacy crises of the Afghan state: why, despite decades of investment and efforts by state and non-state actors, has Afghanistan struggled to build enduring legitimacy? Vote-by-Mail significantly boosts municipal turnout in Utah, especially among Sometimes Voters and those aged 65+. Sometimes Voters show turnout gains of nearly ~19%, while voters 65+ increase by around ~22%. Although turnout rises across all groups, Rare and Habitual Voters show smaller effects. VBM most benefits occasional and older voters.

This study examines gender disparities in prosecutions under Oklahoma’s Failure to Protect child abuse statute. Women—often victims themselves—make up 95% of those charged and are more likely to be convicted. Many receive longer sentences than the abuser, raising urgent concerns about how child protection laws criminalize victimized caregivers.
