The Emergence Of Postcolonial Apologia: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Chinese Governmental Response To Western Accusation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Yiqing Ran

In my thesis, I examine how the Chinese government developed postcolonial apologia throughout its dispute with the US government over policies related to COVID-19. I focus on the shifting rhetorical strategies used by the Chinese government to defend China from accusations by other nations, especially the US. I determine that the Chinese government's response to the Western accusation during the COVID-19 pandemic progressively shifted from participating in the Western system to questioning Western centralization and adding Chinese interpretations to the existing world order. How Race Impacts Political Ideology And Partisanship In The Queer Community, Sarah Shakeel

The impact of race on political ideology and partisanship has been studied for decades, with consensus on some things and debate on others. Similar literature on the queer community—while not as longstanding—certainly exists. However, there is not enough academic work on the intersection of race and sexuality and the way this impacts political behaviors. This paper has attempted to fill this gap. We found that queer POC's are not necessarily more liberal or more Democratic than queer Whites. Nevertheless, looking deeper at cross-racial trends, we do find some interesting relationships.

How do judicial institutions and the choices judges make affect how the law develops? And how does existing law in turn affect judges' decisions? In this dissertation, I address important aspects of both of these fundamental questions of judicial politics. First I explore why courts create inconsistent legal doctrine. Because judges cannot describe how the rules they craft will apply to every conceivable factual variation in cases, they must describe them more abstractly. This dissertation incorporates the study of heuristics into the field of judicial behavior. Heuristics, or mental shortcuts used for quick decision-making, have repeatedly been shown to affect the ability of everyday humans to make rational choices. Experimental evidence suggests that judges are no less susceptible to this type of decision-making, relying on their own preconceived prejudices and sympathies to make decisions regardless of the legal or ideological characteristics of a case. I construct Thomas Carlyle's political philosophy in the contexts of twentieth-century and contemporary political philosophy by dialoging and contrasting Carlyle with the work of John Rawls, Alasdair MacIntyre, Jacques Ellul, and Sayyid Qutb, among others. I also focus my attention on Carlyle as a philosopher who is an intermediary between ancient Platonism and nineteenth-century American Transcendentalism. Carlyle's Sartor Resartus is a Platonic text that provided a foundational inspiration for Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and American Transcendentalism writ-large. Despite Carlyle being a chief source of inspiration for American Transcendentalism, his political theory did not inspire the development of a …

Perhaps the most important question in American politics asks what motivates a voter on Election Day? Voter’s decisions affect the direction of our country over the next four years. A long running debate in political science deals with the rationality of voters, concerning itself with the main indicators of vote choice, which include party versus policy. The paper advances these debates to the 21st century, addressing the results from the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 general elections using data sets from the ANES Data Center. This dissertation explores democratic governance at the local level: responsiveness, transparency, and the emergence of discriminatory policies. First, in Chapter 1, I consider whether citizens in overlapping governing units are represented by their elected officials. In other words, given a patchwork system of overlapping local institutions, can residents direct public policy? To answer this question, I implement a framework that takes into account multiple overlapping governing institutions: cities, counties, school districts, and special districts. Scholarly work and media coverage both point to the negative effect that the rhetoric and policy of former US President Donald Trump had on the lived experience and wellbeing of immigrant groups explicitly targeted by it (i.e., the “Trump effect”). Many commentators express concern that democracy in the United States is under threat, whether from the pressure of concentrated wealth and structural racism, government secrecy and authoritarian tendencies, an outdated constitutional structure and old-fashioned corruption, or perhaps a combination of them all. Against this background, this Article argues that the Supreme Court’s treatment of procedural rights for determining standing—the key that opens the door to federal court—is an overlooked factor in contributing to democratic erosion.
