Despite the pervasive trend in civil war of multiple sponsors backing rebels or the government, there is surprisingly minimal analysis on how the balance of support influences conflict duration. Building on the research of Sawyer et al. (2017), who find that the “fungibility” of external support leads to longer civil war, this thesis contributes a new scoring method for analyzing the balance of “fungible” (hereafter “convertible”) support among combatants (rebels versus government), discovering that a balance of convertibility contributes to shorter conflict. A great deal of research focuses on the question of why incumbents invite IEOs but do not explicitly explored the root cause of why cheating in elections occurs despite the presence of IEOs. The occurrence when incumbents in young democracies invite international election observers (IEOs) and nevertheless cheat in elections has not been fully explored. This research advances the following expectation: incumbents seeking international benefits and whose electoral institutions are not fully mature are more likely to invite IEOs and cheat in an election. Is India the regional hegemon of South Asia? If so, what kind of hegemon is it? India has long been considered the regional hegemon of South Asia, primarily based on relative power considerations alone. We critique this material basis for hegemony. Hegemons must act to establish their hegemony, and smaller states must acquiesce to some degree to establish the relationship. We follow the literature to identify three strands of behavioral definitions of regional hegemony—leadership, domination, and sphere of influence—each drawing on different theoretical foundations, liberalism, realism, and imperialism, respectively. Political scientists have argued that populism is an ideology that can occur on both the left and right, whereby people begin to see politics as a battle between the people and a powerful elite that fails to represent the people’s interest and are attracted to political candidates who vow to fight corruption. In this chapter, I examine how research in political psychology may help to explain the motivations underlying citizens’ attraction to populist ideologies and political candidates. I argue that the same cognitive processes driving people toward populism are those that undermine the intellectual virtues, which in turn, decreases support …

The Appointment Of Women To Authoritarian Cabinets In Africa, Alex Kroeger, Alice J. Kang

What explains variation in the inclusion of women in authoritarian cabinets? We theorize that leaders of electoral autocracies are affected by changing international norms of democracy and women’s rights to appoint women ministers. We propose two hypotheses. First, increasing dependence on aid from democratic donors encourages leaders of electoral autocracies to appoint more women ministers. Second, electoral autocrats uprooting democratic traits appoint more women ministers to minimize the reputational costs of their autocratization. Using data from authoritarian regimes in 38 African countries between 1973 and 2013, we find that increases in aid from democracies are associated with modest increases in …

The saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When it comes to the Supreme Court’s criminal jurisprudence and its relationship to racial (in)equity, progressive scholars often focus on the tartness of the lemons. In particular, they have studied how the Court often ignores race in its criminal decisions, a move that in turn reifies a racially subordinating criminalization system.

However, the Court has recently issued a series of decisions addressing racism in the criminal legal system: Buck v. Davis, Peña-Rodriguez v. Colorado, Timbs v. Indiana, Flowers v. Mississippi, and

นับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2549 ประเทศไทยเผชิญกับความถดถอยของประชาธิปไตยพร้อมกับการเปลี่ยนผ่านจากการเมืองของชนชั้นนำไปสู่การเมืองของมวลชน โดยมีปรากฏการณ์ที่มวลชนคู่ขัดแย้งสองฝ่ายต่างยึดถือความชอบธรรมคนละชุดและออกมาเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง ฝ่ายหนึ่งต่อต้านประชาธิปไตยยึดหลักความชอบธรรมแบบการปกครองตามจารีตประเพณีที่ดำเนินการตามอุดมการณ์หลักอย่าง “ ชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์” และอีกฝ่ายหนึ่งสนับสนุนประชาธิปไตยยึดหลักความชอบธรรมความถูกต้องตามกฎหมาย มีวาทกรรมจำนวนมากที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อสนับสนุนความชอบธรรมของขบวนการเคลื่อนไหว แต่คำที่ถูกผลิตซ้ำและมีอิทธิพลต่อการเมืองไทยคือคำว่า “คนดี”และ “ความดี” ซึ่งสิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือมวลชนที่ให้คุณค่ากับวาทกรรม“คนดี”และ “ความดี” มีแต่ในขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณเท่านั้น วิทยานิพนธ์นี้จึงมุ่งศึกษาความหมายของคำว่า “คนดี”และ “ความดี”ของแต่ละกลุ่มภายใต้ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณ สาเหตุที่ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณใช้วาทกรรม“คนดี”และ “ความดี”มาเป็นเครื่องมือในการสร้างความชอบธรรมและท้ายที่สุดวาทกรรมดังกล่าวส่งผลต่อการเมืองไทยอย่างไรในปัจจุบัน โดยใช้วาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ (Critical Discourse Analysis: CDA) มาเป็นเครื่องมือในการศึกษาเพื่อให้สามารถสะท้อนหลักคิดเบื้องหลังวาทกรรมที่ขบวนการเคลื่อนไหวยึดมั่นและนำมาใช้เป็นความชอบธรรมในการชุมนุม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าภายใต้ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณมีการให้ความหมาย “คนดี”และ “ความดี” อย่างหลากหลายโดยได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากศาสนาพุทธผสมผสานกับลัทธิขงจื่อ ขบวนการฯใช้หลักการทางศาสนาเป็นแกนหลักในการเคลื่อนไหวและสร้างความชอบธรรมให้กับตนเอง ข้อเสนอของขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณไม่เพียงแต่ขับไล่รัฐบาลเท่านั้น แต่พวกเขายังมีความพยายามเสนอรูปแบบการปกครองแบบใหม่ที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะให้ความสำคัญกับหลักคุณธรรมมากกว่าวิถีทางตามหลักประชาธิปไตยแบบสากลซึ่งส่งผลต่อการเลือกตั้งในปีพ.ศ. 2562 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

พลวัตทางการเมืองของตระกูลการเมืองท้องถิ่นภายใต้ระบอบอำนาจนิยม: ศึกษากรณีจังหวัดชลบุรี, อัฟนาน จรัลศาส์น

การวิจัยนี้เป็นวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพลวัตของอำนาจทางการเมืองและศึกษารูปแบบและวิธีการรักษาอำนาจทางการเมืองของตระกูลการเมืองท้องถิ่นจังหวัดชลบุรี ตั้งแต่เหตุการณ์รัฐประหารปี 2557 จนถึงการเลือกตั้งท้องถิ่นปี 2564 เก็บข้อมูลโดยการศึกษาเอกสาร และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลัก 15 คน วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงเนื้อหา และนำเสนอผลการวิจัยเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ตระกูลคุณปลื้มปรับตัวภายใต้ปกครองระบอบอำนาจนิยมโดยการไม่แสดงการต่อต้านการปกครองโดยคณะรัฐประหาร และตัดสินใจเข้าร่วมพรรคการเมืองฝั่งทหารเพื่อการฟื้นฟูอำนาจของตน แต่ผลกระทบทางอ้อม คือ ก่อให้เกิดกลุ่มท้าทายอำนาจสองกลุ่ม ได้แก่ 1) กลุ่มการเมืองในเครือข่ายพรรคก้าวไกล (พรรคอนาคตใหม่เดิม) ซึ่งเป็นขั้วตรงข้ามที่ชูนโยบายต่อต้านการสืบทอดอำนาจเผด็จการทหาร 2) กลุ่มการเมืองของนายสุชาติ ชมกลิ่น ที่แยกตัวออกจากบ้านใหญ่ชลบุรีหลังจากการแลกเปลี่ยนผลประโยชน์ไม่ลงตัวในการเลือกตั้งปี 2562 ทั้งสองกลุ่มกลายมาเป็นคู่แข่งสำคัญในจังหวัดชลบุรี โดยกลุ่มแรกดึงคะแนนเสียงจากคนรุ่นใหม่และชนชั้นกลางที่ไม่ได้มีความยึดโยงกับตระกูลคุณปลื้ม ส่วนกลุ่มที่สองดึงนักการเมืองบางส่วนที่ไม่เห็นด้วยกับการปรับแนวทางการบริหารเครือข่ายบ้านใหญ่ที่เน้นการอุปถัมภ์ช่วยเหลือผ่านอำนาจในระบบราชการมากกว่าการให้เงินส่วนตัวแบบดั้งเดิม อย่างไรก็ตาม ตระกูลคุณปลื้มยังคงรักษาโครงสร้างอำนาจท้องถิ่นแบบขั้วเดียวในจังหวัดชลบุรีได้ผ่านวิธีการเปลี่ยนขั้วทางการเมืองเพื่อเข้าร่วมฝั่งรัฐบาลในการเมืองระดับชาติ วิธีการจัดสรรผลประโยชน์ภายในเครือข่ายบ้านใหญ่ชลบุรีและสร้างเครือข่ายอุปถัมภ์เชื่อมโยงตระกูลคุณปลื้มกับประชาชนในการเมืองระดับท้องถิ่น

What is referred to as climate change today is the rapid warming of the climate, largely from human actions, and the effects that come with that warming. I explore the literature in several scholarly articles that explain why the harmful, traditional practice of child marriage is an issue that predominantly affects girls globally. I also utilize the feminist theory of international relations to support my analysis of child marriage as a gender issue. As climate change continues to ravage the world, mitigation efforts continue to be insufficient to rise to the challenge. Inaction on climate change has been traditionally explained by economic incentives, but some of the variability in climate policies cannot be explained by economics alone. Some variations could be accounted for by the deeply rooted national political culture of Anglo-settler colonies. The problem is economically costly, detrimental to physical and mental health, and damaging to political legitimacy, while also fueling a migration crisis and negatively impacting societal views on human rights. Social movements have sprung up in countries after their respective economies experience an economic crisis and the International Monetary Fund places restrictions on a country’s fiscal policy. Argentina’s piquetero movement and Greece’s anti-austerity movement have both mobilized after economic crises to protest the neoliberal shifts to their economics, yet their success at shifting those policies have not been studied sufficiently. The conflated pattern between poverty, rurality, and indigeneity in Mexico signifies drastic inequality between populations. Poor, rural communities often do not receive as much public services, infrastructure improvements, and employment opportunities as urban areas, which causes out-migration into the cities. Some of the few jobs available in rural areas are in the agriculture sector, either through small-scale subsistence farming or seasonal employment on a large-scale farm. In South Sudan, people are not engaging in violent altercations because of climate change. People are not deciding to kill other people because the average temperature of the world has risen 1 degree celsius, or harming their neighbor because of irregular rain patterns. Alas the link from climate change to violence is not as direct as that. Rather, climate change has played a non-direct role in the South Sudanese conflict. Nationalization has defined American politics in recent years as voters increasingly view state and local government through their national party loyalties. The 2010 midterm elections were intensely nationalized: Hundreds of races for the United States House of Representatives focused on President Barack Obama’s agenda instead of local issues. After election night, Republicans gained 63 seats in the US House, giving them their largest majority since the 1940s. One of the political victims of the election were members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a caucus of centrist, fiscally conservative Democrats in Congress. The Republican Party is known as the Party of Lincoln, they emancipated African Americans from slavery and worked to grant them equalities and rehabilitate them into the US. However, over the next few decades, the GOP began to devalue the Black vote in favor of White Southerners. Black voters support candidates who advocate for their social, economic, and political prosperity. Their loyalty shifts when the party advocates for policies that are harmful to their overall development. National research indicates that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 leaves Black girls behind in the pursuit of gender equity. Low rates of participation and high dropout rates in girls sports plague low-income, majority-minority high schools. This thesis investigates whether the national research holds true in Columbus, Ohio, specifically at West High School. Following from a series of interviews with coaches, teachers, and a student, I find that West High School’s athletic program is Title IX compliant, but girls at West High School still face severe barriers to sports participation. If we accept the purpose of civic education is to teach students how to be good citizens, I argue the way civic education currently exists and operates is failing to achieve this goal. Traditional and mechanical civics has been the norm in education for decades. This has failed to teach students how to be good citizens because it 1) often isolates students with non-dominant identities 2) it does not encourage the motivation nor skills needed for civic engagement after high school and 3) does not include race as part of the curriculum. Since Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election, numerous conservative factions have attempted to fill the void and become dominant within the Republican Party. One of the most visible factions vying for power are the National Conservatives, but this movement has received little examination in academic literature due to its recent formation in 2019. Economic Propaganda In The United States, Brooklyn Montgomery

This thesis aims to identify and analyze three different forms of economic propaganda: cultural, structural, and political. I first examine ‘Do What You Love’ culture and its impact on the labor force. Chapter Two explores the propagation of neoliberal economics as an objective study, and the final chapter analyzes the use of Black capitalism as a political mechanism to quell Black radical sentiment. In detailing these phenomenons, I investigate the implementation, normalization, and effects, as well as the material repercussions of these ideas and structures.

Across the United States, cities are expanding. It is the role of the city leaders to promote policies that benefit both current and incoming residents. While these policies have intended results, the realized benefits and damages are challenging to define because they are the result of individual choices and the unique characteristics of the city. As a result, policymakers need to consider a complex web of factors such as employment, taxation, housing, mobility, and environmental quality. This thesis seeks to analyze these overlapping factors to discuss how policymakers can increase well-being while mitigating potential harms.
