StudyLA’s Los Angeles Public Opinion Survey is the largest general social survey of any metropolitan area in urban America.

Since 2014, StudyLA has surveyed more than 20,000 residents, offering a unique perspective on quality-of-life perceptions, personal financial wellbeing, overall life satisfaction, and opinions on various civic issues facing Los Angeles residents.

Background

Leadership matters. Diversity matters. Data matters. These three sentences are hardly news, but so often studies are limited to one of these areas alone or the intersection of only two of the three. This study was commissioned by the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti to provide a databased analysis of representation by sex and race/ethnicity in Mayoral appointed positions of leadership in the City of Los Angeles.

Background

In Los Angeles, city departments and bureaus are led by general managers. Some departments are either governed or supervised by a board or a commission whose members are usually appointed by the mayor and subject to confirmation by the council. These appointed officials oversee many aspects of life in Los Angeles, from affordable housing or airports, to cultural heritage or the harbor.

These positions are held by many individuals with diverse ethnic backgrounds and lives. As stated in the city’s charter, the mayor shall “strive to make his or her overall appointments to appointed boards, commissions or advisory bodies …

In the wake of nationwide demonstrations for racial justice prompted by the murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and countless other Black individuals, Los Angeles became a focal point for critical discussions around police and community relations.

ABOUT THIS STUDY

The 2022 Los Angeles Public Opinion Survey conducted by StudyLA involved 20-minute telephone sessions and online and faceto- face surveys with 2,002 adults (642 phone, 1,151 online, and 209 face-to-face) living in Los Angeles County. The survey was conducted in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean from January 4th to February 10th, and respondents were asked a range of questions about quality-of-life perceptions and various civic issues. The margin of error is ±3.0% for the entire sample.

This thesis examines the emergence and politicization of ethnic identity in the Kurdish populations of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Through a historical analysis of Kurdish revolts and nationalist movements the late imperial and colonial eras, it demonstrates that ‘Kurdishness’, or Kurdayetî, has been instrumentalized as ethnonationalism primarily in a defensive capacity, in response to external coercive pressures forcing the Kurds to ‘think like a state’ and view themselves in increasingly ethnopolitical terms. By illustrating the extent to which ethnonationalism was imposed upon the Kurdish people and the limited appeal it enjoyed in the first half of the twentieth century, …

We examine the effects of shocks on the invisible Presidential primary in the United States. First, we build on existing models using an algorithm simulating social network shocks. Findings show that positive shocks significantly aid the lead candidate’s chances of winning in the invisible primary. Negative shocks, however, are less detrimental to a lead candidate than positive shocks are helpful, as the leader is often able to survive a negative shock and still emerge victorious. Broad empirical tests demonstrate the importance of shocks as well. Beyond the importance of shocks, findings also suggest that Presidential candidate success in the invisible …

This paper seeks to analyze the reasons for democratization movements in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the late 1970s/early 1980s and mid to late 1980s leading to different political outcomes and democratization success. The analysis will dive into the history and politics leading up to the 1980s, and the context of political movements historically, but will focus on the 1980s. It will trace the context of the early democracy movement leading to the Gwangju Uprising in 1980. The internet meme Pepe the Frog is an excellent avenue for exploring the relationship between post-truth politics, new media, and viral ideas. While memes as conceptualized by Richard Dawkins are essentially timeless components of human society, internet memes as exemplified by the hijacking of Pepe the Frog by the Alt-Right and the Trump campaign are a novel force with uniquely dark implications for liberal democracy. The relatively high average returns on stocks are understood to be partly a function of the risk taken on by investors when investing in stocks. One source of this risk is the uncertainty regarding future government policy. This uncertainty, though, is not constant across time; it is greatest around elections, when new policies are unknown and the impact of the policies will be relatively immediate. As uncertainty resolves following the election, risk premia should decrease & prices should rise. This project collects, digitizes, and makes accessible the freedom suits brought by enslaved families in the Circuit Court for the District of Columbia, Maryland state courts, and the United States Supreme Court. This project places families in the foreground of our interpretive framework of slavery and national formation.

Using TEI encoding, we focused on outcomes, relationships between individuals and the claim for freedom made. Using these data sets, I focused specefically on mothers petitioning for their children. Of the 508 cases I utilized, 131 included children and a parental figure. I set out to distinguish the additional burden mothers had …

In 1808 the Transatlantic Slave Trade ended and in turn the government created a federally protected human market. As the South's demand for human labor force increased the domestic slave trade rocketed and in turn created even more turmoil for the Black population if the United States. Slave Traders and Man-Dealers took advantage of the market and kidnapped Free Black men women and children. While waiting to be sold enslaved people would be admitted into holding cells and jails; this was the creation of slave jails and Slave Bastilles.
