This dissertation is a case study of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s approach to soft power with a focus on Iran’s use of soft power in Afghanistan. This dissertation is unique as it a delves into the diverse conceptual prescriptions on soft power, especially from a non-Western perspective. Studies of soft power in the current International Relations discipline ignore the implicit widespread liberal democratic bias in the current understanding of the concept. Legitimacy is a contested concept in political science. The question of legitimacy has been addressed in various topics, including state formation, state building, and state failure. This research is an attempt to quantitatively test the relationship between state legitimacy and state effectiveness and development in the economy, politics, and society. By examining the literature on legitimacy and its sources, the research tests the following hypothesis: a state with better performance in macro issues, including economic performance, social welfare, and political participation, is more likely to enjoy a higher level of legitimacy. With growing hostilities towards the Ummah (Muslim global community and Diaspora) in Western countries and the fear of Sharia laws, the socialization of international human rights norms within religious institutions, makes for a timely case study. Specifically, this dissertation project aims to capture the process of norm transformation at the grassroots level by investigating the religious, cultural, and social encounter between Islam and the West by interviewing Shia women at a local mosque in Florida. In "Home Style" Fenno observes members of Congress and how they work in DC as well as in their district and with their constituents and he analyzes how important home style is to each member. A number of past sociopolitical studies have attempted to highlight the ways in which generational identity, which develops when people come of age in different times, affects political attitudes. In this study, I investigate generational influence on the degree to which individuals embrace collectivist values, as considered by examinations of social policy attitudes and trust in government. A measure of attitudes towards social policies arguably represent collectivist values because social policy is designed to prioritize the group over the individual. A subsequent measure of trust in government augments the discussion of collectivist values because the formation of democratic political institutions …

The article is devoted to descriptions of the compilation edited by M. Laruelle on an in-depth analysis of relations between Central Asia and Afghanistan over the past few decades. The authors notes that, in general, the authors of the collection conclude that Central Asia is a relatively underestimated neighbor of Afghanistan. Foreign literature often sets out the region in a historical and political context - as part of the Silk Road trade route, a clash of great powers in the Great Game, a conflict-generating source, which limits the scientific knowledge of Central Asian themes.

The article is devoted to issues of Uzbek-Afghan relations. It is noted that the high dynamics of Uzbek-Afghan relations is the result of a new foreign policy strategy of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Based on the analysis of the dynamics of development of bilateral relations, the author identifies concrete changes and successes in these relations. As a result, the author notes Uzbekistan will continue its efforts to promote the peaceful development of Afghanistan, which serves as a guarantee of security and prosperity of the entire Central Asian region.

Students of the American Founding routinely assert that America's civic leaders were influenced by secular Lockean political ideas, especially on the question of resistance to tyrannical authority. In the first part of this series, we showed that virtually all Reformed writers, from Calvin to the end of the Glorious Revolution, agreed that tyrants could be actively resisted. The only debated question was who could resist them. In this essay, we contend that the Reformed approach to active resistance had an important influence on how America's Founders responded to perceived tyrannical actions by Parliament and the Crown.

The Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University surveyed a random sample of adult residents of Kansas, age 18 and older, to assess their rating of the candidates of the 2018 Kansas gubernatorial election. The survey sample consists of random Kansas landline telephone numbers and cellphone numbers. From March 19 to April 2nd, a total of 1,405 Kansas residents were contacted by telephone, and 367 of them completed the survey, resulting in a 26.12% response rate (367/1,405). At a 95% confidence level, the margin of error for the full sample of 367 is 5.12%. A margin of …

In this paper, I seek to answer two principal questions: what motivates candidates in La Marsa to run on independent lists, and what differentiates each of La Marsa’s four independent lists from each other? Through interviews with candidates and from campaign materials such as Facebook pages, brochures, and videos, I have found that the fundamental lack of confidence in extant Tunisian political parties and processes has led candidates to align with independent, or citizen, lists for the May 2018 municipal elections. The central objective of this paper is to put the "marketization of the state" debate into context, both on the descriptive level and on the normative level, by viewing it through the prisms of the ideal types of interaction between states and individuals, and against the background of global competition. Human rights groups have called undocumented Central American migrants the ‘invisible victims’ of criminal violence in Mexico. However, the geography of the unauthorised migration route through Mexico is highly visible; its location, protocols and violent practices constitute common knowledge in the communities through which it cuts its path. This paper examines the visual cues of the route. Images of places, such as the trailhead, the river at the borders, the migrant shelter and the train yard, provide focal points that orient migrants to the physical terrain.
