This research paper aims to investigate the persistence of human rights violations in Yemen from 2008 to 2018. It examines whether this persistence of human rights violations is related to Yemen’s regime type, external actors such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Iran, and the United States, Yemen’s state of wealth and economic growth, and civil wars. While the study of war occurrence is among the primary considerations of the field of international relations, only recently has attention turned towards the study of war outcomes. This attention is best represented by the democratic victory proposition, which suggests that democracies win the majority of their wars by virtue of being democratic. However, elements of this study are currently incipient. In turn, this dissertation generates a novel set of variables to measure the impact of terrain on war outcomes, including measures of spatial extent, topographic heterogeneity, and land cover heterogeneity. This dissertation is a rhetorical criticism of the U.S. government’s response to Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who exposed illegal and unethical surveillance tactics of the National Security Agency and U.S. government. Informed by contemporary theories of democracy, this synchronic ideographic analysis examines the rhetorical strategies of U.S. government officials following Snowden’s disclosures. This dissertation contends that in laboring to absolve themselves of culpability, U.S. officials obfuscated Snowden and operationalized as an ideograph. This reification provides methodological development to ideographic analysis as it demonstrates how a political figure can become a rhetorical abstraction used for ideological purposes. In my three empirical chapters, I provide documentation for my claims that (1) the people did petition the General Government, such as through petitions and resolutions of instruction and, (2) the national representatives did acknowledge and respectively act on the people’s political documents, with attention paid to the defense of republican self-government, during the decades before and after Ratification. The evidence suggests that Americans did peripheralize the General Government before and after Ratification because of a belief in the republican values of freedom, virtue, and equality.

This study explores the factors that influence Mexican emigration to the United States. By determining the relationship between emigration and different economic, social, and demographic variables, this paper seeks to determine the relative importance of factors that drive Mexicans to leave their country. This paper looks at the following emigration push and pull factors: home-country economic conditions, employment opportunities, education quality, crime, drug-cartel related violence, social ties in the U.S., gender, age, and income. China signed its first turn-key communication satellite contract with Nigeria in 2004. The contract stipulated that China would design, build, integrate, launch, and complete in-orbit checkout for the Nigcomsat-1 communication satellite and then transfer control over to Nigeria. By 2018, China had contracted and launched another six communication satellites for various foreign customers. The customers, who are foreign governments, are geographically dispersed throughout South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Asia Pacific power structure is facing numerous challenges. Scholarship demonstrates Japan has encountered arduous obstacles as it balances Chinese and North Korean activity. As Japan attempts to expand its military capabilities, polling data shows that defense policy has conflicted with Japan's citizens and neighboring countries. The focal point of these contentions is Article 9 of the Japanese constitution which restrains the Japanese military to self-defense purposes. This study examines what factors contribute to United States' compliance with rule of law in response to terrorism. A qualitative analysis utilizing a comparative case study approach to examine the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations' response to domestic and international terrorism. This study tests what impact the location of terrorist attacks, nationality of terrorist actors, and presidential ideology have upon rule of law compliance. Results from this study illustrate the causal relationship between rule of law compliance and presidential ideology, while taking into account the impact of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

How do increases in environmental protests in China impact increases in the implementation of environmental policies? Environmental protests in China are gaining traction. By examining these protests, this study analyzes forty-one protests and their impact on government enforcement of environmental regulations. Stratifying this study according to five areas (Beijing, Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Sichuan), patterns began to emerge according to each area. This study examines the role of ethnic inclusion as a factor of regime stability in Afghanistan through an historical case analysis from 1880 until 2009. By utilizing case study research methods, the goal of the study is to examine all the past regimes in order to show whether there is a relationship between the dependent variable regime stability and the independent variable ethnic inclusion. This research examines the relationship between the number of refugees hosted by states and the economic ability of host states by using UNHCR’s refugee data and World Bank’s GNI per capita data. To identify the relationship between these two variables, this study uses two sets of panel data covering 145-178 countries, around 43-55 years and 3000-5000 observations. For the two sets of panel data, four models are produced to test the null and alternative hypotheses. The fact that Kant does not articulate a theory of distributive justice has not kept political philosophers from citing Kant as inspiration and support for whatever theory of distributive justice they favor - including those who argue that the notion of distributive justice is itself mistaken. This widespread reliance on Kant invites the question, "Does the Doctrine of Right imply a theory of distributive justice?"

การอธิบายเหตุการณ์การรัฐประหารทั้งในปี พ.ศ.2549 และพ.ศ.2557 โดยทั่วไปแล้ว มุ่งอธิบายเกี่ยวกับตัวแสดงหลัก เช่น ผู้ชุมนุมประท้วงทั้งกลุ่มพันธมิตร ฯ กลุ่มกปปส. นายทหารชนชั้นนำและกองทัพ แต่ไม่มีการอธิบายหรือการศึกษาในแง่มุมของความเคลื่อนไหวขององค์ความรู้ทางโหราศาสตร์และศาสตร์การพยากรณ์อื่น ๆ รวมไปถึงบทบาท หน้าที่ของโหรและหมอดูในช่วงการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองไทย งานวิจัยนี้มีจุดประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาและทาความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับบทบาท หน้าที่ของปัญญาชนทางโหราศาสตร์ (โหรและหมอดู) โดยพบว่า ปัญญาชนทางโหราศาสตร์ เป็นผู้ใช้องค์ความรู้ทางโหราศาสตร์ในการผลิตคำทำนายและคำพยากรณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเมือง และมีส่วนสำคัญต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองทั้ง 2 ครั้ง กล่าวคือ คำทำนายและคำพยากรณ์มีส่วนในการลดทอนความชอบธรรมให้แก่ระบอบประชาธิปไตย และขณะเดียวกันมีส่วนในการเพิ่มความชอบธรรมให้แก่ระบอบเผด็จการ โดยคำทำนายและคำพยากรณ์ถูกสื่อสารไปยังผู้คนในสังคมผ่านความรู้สึก 3 ประการได้แก่ ความรู้สึกหวั่นไหว ความกลัว และความหวังกับความมั่นใจ เพื่อให้ผู้คนในสังคมยินยอมและยอมรับในระบอบเผด็จการ นอกจากนั้น งานวิจัยนี้ยังศึกษาและทำความเข้าใจวิธีการสร้างสถานะ และความสัมพันธ์ ระหว่างโหรและหมอดูกับทหาร และชนชั้นนำทางการเมืองอื่น ๆ โดยพบว่า ปัญญาชนทางโหราศาสตร์ (โหรและหมอดู) มีการสร้างสถานะ ความสัมพันธ์กับชนชั้นนำทางการเมือง โดยเฉพาะชนชั้นนำทางการทหาร ผ่านความสัมพันธ์ใกล้ชิด ความเคารพนับถือและเลื่อมใส ในสถานะลูกศิษย์และอาจารย์ ซึ่งสถานะ และความสัมพันธ์ที่เกิดขึ้นมีลักษณะต่างตอบแทนกัน

การศึกษาวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา 1. ศึกษาการจัดตั้งองค์กรพัฒนาการและปัญหาของชุมนุมสหกรณ์กองทุนสวนยางอุบลราชธานี จำกัด 2. ทำความเข้าใจอำนาจทางการเมืองของชุมนุมสหกรณ์กองทุนสวนยางอุบลราชธานี จำกัด ผ่านทางการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับภาคส่วนต่าง ๆ เป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ หน่วยในการศึกษาได้แก่ชุมนุมสหกรณ์กองทุนสวนยางอุบลราชธานี และเครือข่ายของชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ ภายในจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี โดยศึกษาจาก เอกสาร รายงาน งานวิจัยต่าง ๆ หนังสือ สื่อทั้งสิ่งพิมพ์และออนไลน์ ประกอบกับการทำวิจัยภาคสนาม โดยใช้การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกต่อบุคคลที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดำเนินงานชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ ทั้งยังใช้วิธีการเข้าร่วมสังเกตการณ์ในการประชุมของชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ ข้อมูลที่ได้นำมารวบรวม และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศึกษาด้านการจัดตั้งชุมนุมสหกรณ์กองทุนสวนยางอุบลราชธานี จำกัดนั้น พบว่า การจัดตั้งชุมนุมฯ มาจากความต้องการรวมตัวของเกษตรกรเอง เนื่องจากเผชิญปัญหาต่าง ๆ ในการขายยางพารา ได้แก่ปัญหาราคายางพาราตกต่ำ ความต้องการศูนย์กลางตลาดยางพารา ทำให้เห็นว่าการรวมตัวกันจะช่วยแก้ปัญหาได้ และสามารถรับความช่วยเหลือจากภาครัฐได้ แต่ปัจจัยเกื้อหนุนที่สำคัญที่สุดในการจัดตั้งชุมนุมฯ คือการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐ เพราะภาครัฐเองก็ได้ประโยชน์จากากรรวมตัวของกลุ่มเกษตร เนื่องจากภาครัฐสามารถได้ข้อมูลจากเกษตรกรได้ดีในเงื่อนไขที่มีการรวมกลุ่มกัน ทำให้ภาครัฐสามารถแก้ไขปัญหาให้ตรงจุดด้านการสร้างอำนาจทางการเมืองให้กับชุมนุมสหกรณ์กองทุนสวนยางอุบลราชธานี จำกัด ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อำนาจทางการเมืองของชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ วัดได้จากความสัมพันธ์กับภาคส่วนต่าง ๆ ห้าด้านดังนี้คือ 1. ด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับนักการเมือง พบว่านักการเมืองเป็นคนสำคัญที่จะช่วยเจรจาต่อรองระหว่าง ชุมนุมสหกรณ์กับภาครัฐ เมื่อนักการเมืองมีอำนาจลดลงทำให้เกิดความอ่อนแอของชุมนุมสหกรณ์อย่างเห็นได้ชัด 2. ด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับภาครัฐส่วนกลาง จะเห็นได้ว่าเป็นความสัมพันธ์ในลักษณะที่รัฐให้การสนับสนุน และชุมนุมสหกรณ์ต้องพึ่งพิง ซึ่งไม่ได้มีอำนาจแบบเท่าเทียมกัน 3. ปัจจัยด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับภาครัฐส่วนภูมิภาค ประเด็นนี้พบว่าไม่มีความแน่นอน ไม่ได้มีลักษณะตายตัว หรือเป็นสถาบัน แต่ขึ้นอยู่กับ ตัวข้าราชการ โดยเฉพาะผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดและนายอำเภอ หากข้าราชการฝ่ายปกครองให้ความสนใจประเด็นปัญหายางพารา ชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ ก็จะได้รับการช่วยเหลือดูแลและประสานงานอย่างดี ทั้งนี้ขึ้นกับข้าราชการที่ย้ายมารับตำแหน่ง 4. ปัจจัยด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น พบว่าความสัมพันธ์ด้านนี้นั้น ขึ้นกับบรรยากาศและบริบททางการเมือง ในบรรยากาศที่มีประชาธิปไตยและมีการกระจายอำนาจ องค์กรปกครองท้องถิ่นมีสายสัมพันธ์ที่ดี และเอื้อประโยชน์ให้กับชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯอย่างมาก และ 5. ด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชุมนุมสหกรณ์ฯ กับพ่อค้าคนกลาง จะเห็นได้ว่าการรวมตัวกันของชาวสวนยางมีประโยชน์ให้เกิดอำนาจต่อรองมากกว่าชาวสวนยางในลักษณะปัจเจกบุคคล

การศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของการพัฒนาเมืองภูเก็ตกับการเมืองท้องถิ่น, สุดรัก หนูนิ่ม

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์การพัฒนาเมืองภูเก็ตกับการเมืองท้องถิ่น ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2540 ถึง ปัจจุบัน โดยมุ่งทำความเข้าใจความสัมพันธ์ในอำนาจของนักการเมืองท้องถิ่นกับพื้นที่เมืองในระดับนคร ภายใต้กรอบแนวคิดเรื่องเศรษฐกิจการเมือง โดยมีคำถามการวิจัยคือ 1) ลักษณะการพัฒนาทุนนิยมของจังหวัดภูเก็ตเชื่อมโยงหรือมีผลต่อการเมืองท้องถิ่นอย่างไรและ 2) ทุนนิยมชนิดใดทีเป็นปัจจัยขับเคลื่อนให้เมืองภูเก็ตเกิดการพัฒนา การศึกษาครั้งนี้ได้อาศัยวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการศึกษาพื้นที่เมืองของเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต ผลการศึกษาพบว่าทุนนิยมในเมืองนครภูเก็ตตั้งแต่อดีต จนกระทั่งปัจจุบัน ประกอบไปด้วยทุนนิยมเหมืองแร่ และทุนนิยมวัฒนธรรม โดยทุนนิยมเหมืองแร่มีทุนทรัพยากรเป็นพื้นฐานที่สำคัญหลังจากกิจการเหมืองแร่เริ่มซบเซา เมืองภูเก็ตมีสภาพเศรษฐกิจที่หยุดชะงัก จนกระทั่งนักการเมืองท้องถิ่นเทศบาลนครภูเก็ตได้เล็งเห็นถึงการนำทุนอุตสาหกรรมและทุนภาคบริการมาเป็นกลไกในการขับเคลื่อนเศรษฐกิจเมือง นับจากนั้นเพียงไม่นานทุนดังกล่าวก็ได้หล่อรวมเกิดเป็นทุนนิยมวัฒนธรรมขึ้นในพื้นที่เทศบาลนครภูเก็ต ก่อให้เกิดผลประโยชน์ทางธุรกิจในพื้นที่ขนาดใหญ่ซึ่งทำให้นักการเมืองท้องถิ่นที่เข้ามาแย่งชิงอำนาจในพื้นที่เมืองแห่งนี้ได้รับผลประโยชน์จากการเติบโตของเมืองนครภูเก็ตผ่านโครงการพัฒนาต่างๆ ทำให้พื้นที่เมืองถูกขยายและพัฒนาออกไป ระบบทุนนิยมวัฒนธรรมวัฒนธรรมส่งผลต่อเศรษฐกิจเมืองและเมื่อเศรษฐกิจเป็นตัวชี้นำทิศทางของการเมืองได้ การแพ้ชนะในการแข่งขันของการเมืองท้องถิ่นจึงเป็นการแพ้ชนะกันด้วยโครงการพัฒนาที่เกิดขึ้นในพื้นที่ซึ่งกลุ่มที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในการทำให้เกิดทุนนิยมวัฒนธรรมขึ้น คือ การเมืองท้องถิ่นเทศบาลนครภูเก็ตซึ่งเป็นที่ประจักษ์ว่ากลุ่มการเมืองที่ชนะการเลือกตั้งมาโดยตลอดระยะเวลากว่า 20 ปีมีมีเพียงกลุ่มเดียวคือ กลุ่มคนหนุ่ม ซึ่งสมาชิกในกลุ่มล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นนายทุนในพื้นที่ที่มีการสะสมทุนทางเศรษฐกิจมาตั้งแต่ยุคทุนนิยมเหมืองแร่ ดังนั้นนครภูเก็ตตั้งแต่ปี 2540 จนกระทั้งถึงปัจจุบันถูกขับเคลื่อนโดยทุนนิยมที่เรียกว่าทุนนิยมวัฒนธรรม
