What factors influence the likelihood that a woman runs for, wins, and holds political office across the country? Is it easier to explain why a woman runs in, than that she ultimately represents, a certain district? I compare a series of state-level and district-level independent variables and relate them to two different dependent variables: that a woman ran for a district seat, and that a woman represents a district. The public sector is often lauded for its egalitarian principles and penchant for mutual cooperation, but competition is increasingly becoming the norm which may affect communication, efficiency, goals, and objectives. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects that competition and private sector practices have on public servants. A survey was sent to 700 employees of municipal governments in Massachusetts; 45 respondents completed the survey over the course of two weeks. The principle lesson learned from this research was that while public servants view competitive practices negatively, and nearly half of respondents viewed their performance evaluations negatively, neither …

This research focuses on identity as a source of opposition to national monuments. Whenever a new national monument or park is proposed, it faces almost constant opposition form local residents who often attribute their concerns to economic fears related to land use change, loss of industry, and threats to traditional practices like hunting or fishing. However, in most cases, national parks and monuments actually boost their local economies. Rather than taking an economic approach to analyzing community opposition to national monuments, this research uses identity as a lens to understand why communities continue to oppose new federal park land.

In Canada, particularly since the protection of minority rights under the Charter, rights rhetoric and judicial challenges have emerged as a critical means of redressing the inequity experienced by subordinated peoples and groups - thereby privileging law and its accompanying equality framework as an agent of enfranchisement. Undoubtedly, no other social group has witnessed such rapid advancement of their rights via legal activism in the Canadian policy landscape as has the LGBTQ community – including access to marriage. Recent changes in policies, laws, and public opinion have brought discussions about gender and gender-related topics to the forefront of cultural discourse. In spite of increased acceptance of gender nonconformity in public laws and Supreme Court rulings, we continue to see acts of hostility towards people who express their gender in nontraditional ways on both macro-system and individual levels. Viewing questions surrounding the issues of gender through an identity-oriented lens may shed light on some aspects of this complex topic. Queer And Trans After Obergefell V. Hodges: An Autoethnographic Oral History, Jackson Wright Shultz, Kristopher Shultz

Trans and nonbinary communities often cite different priorities in their activism than do cisgender queer communities. This paper seeks to explore the effects of marriage equality, as well as the prioritization of marriage equality on queer trans and nonbinary individuals using a combined methodology of autoethnography and oral history. The findings suggest that trans individuals in queer relationships may have difficulty reconciling disparate aspects of their identities, including their political and activist priorities. The authors conclude that providing queer trans individuals platforms to voice their opinions is essential to ongoing dialogue about the role of marriage in queer communities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals in the United States seem to be making strides in some social institutions, such as family, due to the recent ruling on marriage equality. Still, there remains a contentious relationship between sexual and gender minority youth, adults, and the institution of religion, for many faith systems. This study explores the relationship between religiosity, long theorized to act as a protective factor from offending, gender and sexuality. In contrast to even a decade ago, there are more queer people in the public eye, and an increasing number people embracing a diverse range of sexual identities in the United States. To be overtly homophobic in public discourse is now risky, with public figures facing increased backlash. At the same time, even after marriage equality has been achieved, queer people in the United States still face systemic barriers to lived equality. Where Do Women Stand?: Attitudes Towards Female Political Participation In India And The Us, Grace A. Carlson

Celebration of Learning

This project aimed to study attitudes towards gender inequalities in politics, both in the United States and India. Using original survey research and World Values Survey data, American and Indian attitudes towards women in politics were analyzed and compared. Ultimately, the project found that respondents in both countries still hold distinctly unequal views on women in the political sphere.

Cuban musician and singer Willy Chirino, the self-proclaimed inventor of the “Miami Sound,” was sent to the United States as a teenager in the 1960s under Operation Pedro Pan to escape the influence of Fidel Castro's communist regime. Throughout his career, he has used his music to spread a personal and political agenda; his rejection of communism and the Castro regime can be seen through his song lyrics, humanitarian efforts, and direct engagement in the world of politics.

Foster V. Chatman: A Missed Opportunity For Batson And The Peremptory Challenge, Nancy Marder

In 2016, the United States Supreme Court decided that the prosecutors in Foster v. Chatman exercised race-based peremptory challenges in violation of Batson v. Kentucky. The Court reached the right result, but missed an important opportunity. The Court should have acknowledged that after thirty years of the Batson experiment, it is clear that Batson is unable to stop discriminatory peremptory challenges. Batson is easy to evade, so discriminatory peremptory challenges persist and the harms from them are significant. The Court could try to strengthen Batson in an effort to make it more effective, but in the end the only way …

Although post-colonial theory was developed to examine the legacy of colonial powers, this project proposes that post-colonial theory can nonetheless fruitfully be used for a literary analysis of the Fair Housing Act to account for the typically non-colonial legacy of US segregation. Even though Chicago is not a city in the colonial context, the post-colonial discourse of violence, territorialization, and citizenship are useful tools for understanding the language in legislation that shaped American systemic segregation. Article 33 of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees states that host nations shall not expel or return a refugee to their home nation ‘where his life or freedom would be threatened.’ However, as demonstrated in three contemporary case studies in protracted displacement the interests of the sovereign state drive nations to craft strategies to limit cross-border refugee mobility. The refoulement of refugees escaping drug cartel violence throughout the Americas, internally displaced Haitians, and Syrian refugees in Jordan are all ‘managed’ by one of two methods. In this paper the author examines the struggle of the Kurdish people for self-determined social, political, and economic development in the whirlwind of conflict in the Middle East. It uses a case study of how a Kurdish minority in Iraq interact with multiple stakeholders in their struggle for nationhood, and implications of these interactions for overall Kurdish social and economic development.
