Japan’s 2013 UN Arms Trade Treaty diplomacy exhibited neither the standard minimalist, subservient negotiating style nor policymaking restricted to the usual actors. Juxtaposition of the treaty and the 2014 arms export policy revision illustrates how traditional ‘‘peace diplomacy’’ can evolve into ‘‘proactive pacifism.’’

As the North Korean threat has grown, so has the case for greater cooperation between South Korea and Japan. Observers have noted, and in some cases bemoaned, the lingering historical hostility that prevents more robust cooperation. Despite the emphasis on their historical differences, both countries share a tragic experience: the abduction of nationals by the North Korean regime. Unfortunately, the issue has not promoted common purpose and resolve. Instead, the failure to coordinate on this issue has hindered diplomacy without enhancing the chances of a resolution to this tragic issue. 2017 PUBLIC OPINION SURVEY METHODOLOGY

As part of Forecast LA’s unique approach to forecasting in the Los Angeles region, the Center for the Study of Los Angeles conducted an outlook survey. The Los Angeles Public Opinion Survey involved 20-minute telephone sessions and online surveys with more than 2,400 adults (1,800 phone and 600 online) living in Los Angeles County. Survey respondents were asked about quality-of-life perceptions, personal economic wellbeing, economic concerns, overall life satisfaction, and various civic issues. LOS ANGELES, August 1, 2017 – Public support for hosting the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles is overwhelming, and nearly as strong as it was for the 2024 Games, according to a survey by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University. Without interventions to address homelessness among youth, the risk of homelessness for future generations is great. As a result, the federal government has invested in funding Transitional Living Programs (TLPs), though it is not clear whether these programs have achieved the intended outcomes of helping youth transition from homelessness to being able to sustain employment and avoid poverty through access to educational and workforce programs. This study uses Margaret Hermann’s Leadership Trait Analysis (LTA) to compare Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping and see if they have the same style. Through a content analysis of a leader’s speeches, researchers can gain insight into a leader’s motivation for obtaining office and power. In the course of this research, 167 speeches by Mao, and 79 Speeches by Xi were inputted into the content analysis program Profiler+ (Hermann, 2003). The analysis showed that Mao and Xi have some similarities in their LTA results, but the differences in their scores indicate different approaches to leadership. An analysis of the context …

This study utilizes all European states who are a member of NATO and seeks to understand their reason for intervening in 14 post-cold war conflicts. Specifically, this study seeks to address whether the involvement of the United States, their NATO membership, and the humanitarian extent of the crisis play a role in their intervention decision. When an internal conflict ends, many states are faced with a choice of whether or not the insurgents they were fighting against should become political figures they govern beside. Increasingly, peace settlements involve the proposed evolution of guerrilla groups into political parties, yet little is known about rebel groups' long-term effectiveness in governing (Vines and Oruitemeka, 2008). "What contributes to the differences in women's economic empowerment" To investigate this problem, a large N statistical analysis set up this comparative case study of Bangladesh and India that evaluates the relationship between women's access to employment in the formal labor market and women's access to ownership of accounts in banks and other financial institutions. The large N statistical analysis results illustrate a global pattern that the percentage of women working in the formal labor market is associated with a greater percentage of women having accounts in banks or other financial institutions. This thesis examines U.S. immigrant and refugee policy and policy discourse to understand the formation of Muslims as particular sites of risk as immigrants in the War on Terror. Theorists of international relations theorize securitization as a process in which state actors begin to use the language of security in considering the regulation and governance of a certain policy issue area. Alice Kang’s Bargaining for Women’s Lives is an impressive study of the competition between women activists and religious conservatives in Muslim-majority, francophone Niger. In this emerging democracy, Kang focuses on debates about women’s rights at the time when freedom of speech and assembly were being established. She explores how Niger handles women’s issues: who puts them on the national agenda, how they get framed and who decides. In a chapter discussing (unsuccessful) efforts to reform family law, Kang identifies the inability of colonial and post-colonial rulers to create central state structures as the problem since it left traditional Muslim authorities …

Heroes are not born; they’re made. This article examines the commonalities in the backgrounds of people who take heroic action on behalf of others to theorize the ways in which our society can encourage citizens to prepare themselves to act heroically. วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาบทบาทของอนุรักษนิยมไทยที่มีต่อการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศในช่วง พ.ศ. 2516 ถึง พ.ศ. 2521 อันเป็นช่วงที่เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งในเวทีระหว่างประเทศและในการเมืองไทย ทั้งนี้ ความไร้เสถียรภาพทางการเมืองภายในของไทยอันเกิดขึ้นจากการขยายตัวของพลังฝ่ายขวาในการต่อต้านขบวนการนักศึกษาและขบวนการเคลื่อนไหวอื่นจำนวนมากในบริบทของการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศในภูมิภาคหลังการประกาศถอนตัวของสหรัฐฯ ออกจากเวียดนาม ทำให้รัฐอนุรักษนิยมไทยต้องหาทางเลือกใหม่สำหรับการรักษาระบอบที่จะนำเสถียรภาพและความมั่นคงกลับคืนมา นั่นคือการตัดสินใจเลือกแนวทางการปรับนโยบายที่แตกต่างจากข้อเรียกร้องของขบวนการฝ่ายขวา โดยผลการศึกษาพบว่าอนุรักษนิยมไทยในบริบทของการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศนั้นไม่มีความเป็นเอกภาพ นั่นคือ มีทั้งอนุรักษนิยมที่มีบทบาทที่สำคัญในการปรับนโยบายต่างประเทศให้สอดคล้องกับสถานการณ์ด้วยการสนับสนุนการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตกับกลุ่มประเทศคอมมิวนิสต์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน และกลุ่มประเทศอินโดจีน และอนุรักษนิยมที่เป็นฝ่ายขวา คือ ต่อต้านคอมมิวนิสต์ ต่อต้านประเทศที่เป็นคอมมิวนิสต์ และต่อต้านการปรับนโยบายต่างประเทศต่อประเทศคอมมิวนิสต์ แต่ก็ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จแต่อย่างใด จึงอาจกล่าวได้ว่าอนุรักษนิยมฝ่ายขวาเป็นปัจจัยสร้างเงื่อนไขเร่งความไร้เสถียรภาพทางการเมืองภายในของไทย และสามารถสั่นคลอนฐานะของรัฐบาลได้ แต่กลับไม่ได้มีผลต่อการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศ

As a comparativist, searching for a framework for “comparative environmental politics” (as opposed to policy), I began studying the three “Principle 10 (P10)” environmental access rights (also known as the pillars of environmental democracy)i, first promulgated in the 1992 Rio Declaration. Since the late 1990s, these P10 rights, “access to environmental information,” “access to participation,” and, “access to justice in environmental matters,” are globally seen as promoting transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance. The relationship that Cuba has with the United States and global markets is shifting. This project will address the changing mindset of Cuban society in regards to the global markets and internal changes that have already drastically affected the island and will continue to do so. The structure of employment in Cuba has changed, allowing the private and self-employed sectors to grow, while attracting fewer and fewer state employees.
