Last November, we ran a little preview of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, pointing you to a few readings about this big “coming distraction.” Last week the US finally committed to attend the Expo, prompting a new round of Expo stories around the web.

Kansas Speaks 2009 Statewide Public Opinion Survey, Gary Brinker

The Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University surveyed a random sample of adult residents of Kansas age 18 and older to assess attitudes and opinions regarding various issues of interest to Kansas citizens. Surveying took place from April 28 to September 8, 2009, when 2,082 households were contacted via telephone. In 1,220 households, an eligible respondent completed the interview. This results in a cooperation rate of 62%. This sample has a margin of error of +/- 2.9% at a 95% confidence level (that is, there is a 95% probability that the true percentages in the population …

The cultural and political implications of landscape change and urban growth in the western U.S. are well-documented. However, comparatively little scholarship has examined the effects of urbanization on sense of place in the southern U.S. We contribute to the literature on competing place meanings with a case study from the rural “Sewee to Santee” region of northern Charleston County, SC. Our research highlights conflicting cultural, environmental, and racial politics and their roles in struggles over place meanings. Using focus groups, interviews with elected officials, and participant observation, we document initial African American resistance and eventual compliance with the prevailing anti-sprawl …

In this paper I contribute to the scholarship on public support for European integration by arguing that member-states’ positive images influence individuals’ support decisions. An attribute of this positive image is trust, which individuals utilize given the complexity of the integration process, the salient impact it has on their lives and the low levels of information individuals possess. The use of a member-state’s image is therefore a short-cut to evaluate integration’s impact on individuals. As the development of integration is strongly influenced by the relatively more economically powerful member-state, trust in Germany increases the level of support, more so than …
