Political Context And The Turnout Of New Women Voters After Suffrage, Kevin Corder, Christina Wolbrecht

Political Science Faculty Publications

Many observers expected new women voters to respond to their political context in distinctive ways. Some scholars anticipated that newly-enfranchised women—lacking political interest and experience—would be volatile and highly responsive to context. Others expected political isolation and norms proscribing political activity would insulate women from political stimuli.We test these competing predictions with a Bayesian approach to ecological inference and a unique set of aggregate data.We find that the responsiveness of women’s turnout is strikingly similar to that of men. However, the lesser impact of electoral competition, and the greater effect of electoral laws and prior suffrage activism, suggest that the …

The importance of educational evaluation relies on its aim to ensure the accountability of public schools yo the government and beneficiaries, and contribute to the improvement of quality of education in schools through the collection and analysis of data on school performance. This study highlights various conceptual frameworks and practical methodologies underlying the design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation systems in public education. Using these frameworks, the school supervision system employed in Egyptian primary education and its current challenges are examined and analyzed. Participatory development has become one of the central influences in mainstream development thinking, as a result many of the influential bilateral and multilateral agencies, including the World Bank, have joined the advocacy of participatory development. In practice, participatory development encounters many challenges. First, local communities may not be homogeneous. Second, the local people often tell questioners what they think the questioners want to hear, a process which Chambers calls "inadvertent ventriloquism". Third, not all members of the population have equal will and power. This creates a skewed form of local knowledge and increases the risk of distorting the wishes and …

Hungary: Holding Back The Tiers, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Hungary has a particularly complicated electoral system: a type of mixed system that incorporates three tiers of seat allocation, the use of a proportional allocation formula, and the allocation of a number of seats by a two-round system in single-member constituencies. Examination of the strategic incentives facing parties explains some surprising outcomes, such as the majoritarian impact on the party system and the possibility of the second strongest party in votes becoming the strongest in seats. Despite its complexity and alleged shortcomings, it is unlikely to be abandoned; it serves the interests of the largest parties, and these effectively wield …

Globalization, Migration Health, And Educational Preparation For Transnational Medical Encounters, Peter Koehn

Unprecedented migration, a core dimension of contemporary globalization, challenges population health. In a world of increasing human mobility, many health outcomes are shaped by transnational interactions among care providers and care recipients who meet in settings where nationality/ ethnic match is not an option. This review article explores the value of transnational competence (TC) education as preparation for ethnically and socially discordant clinical encounters. The relevance of TC's five core skill domains (analytic, emotional, creative, communicative, and functional) for migration health and the medical-school curriculum is elaborated. Teaching And Researching "The Politics Of Race" In A Majority White Institution, Byron D. Orey

In this chapter, I outline some of the challenges faced by people of color who teach at traditional white institutions (TWIs). In addition, I offer proposed remedies to address such challenges. Given that the primary foci of Research I universities are research, teaching, and service (generally in that order), this chapter places special emphasis on these categories.

I first suggest that departments attempting to diversify their faculty consider hiring more than one person of color. While I was contemplating whether to accept my current job, I was contacted by a woman of color who told me that she had just …
