Public Opinion On The Third Term City Charter Amendment (October, 2001), Susan E. Howell

This survey of registered voters in New Orleans was conducted three weeks before the election and prior to intense campaigning. It should be considered a baseline survey. That is, this is the state of opinion that the Mayor faces in trying to change the Charter. As the referendum on the third term charter change amendment approaches, opposition remains strong. Over half of registered voters say they will vote against the amendment, and a third say they will support it.

The Baton Rouge Bar Association seeks to provide the public, lawyers, and the judges with some sort of evaluation of the judges in the Baton Rouge area. Since it is difficult for the public to obtain information on judges, the Bar Association relied on its own members and the members of the Louis Martinet Society to evaluate all judges, including city, state, and federal courts. Hopefully, the results will be useful to the public, the lawyers, and especially to the judges. The Historical Uniqueness Of The Clinton Welfare Reforms: A New Level Of Social Misery?, Larry Patriquin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This essay argues that the 1996 reforms to the American welfare state have no historical precedent. They are not a return to "the poorhouse era" and are radically distinct from Great Britain's new poor law of 1834, to which they are often compared. America is the first advanced capitalist country to jettison a significant element of its welfare state and, as such, is moving into waters that are uncharted and dangerous.
