Many critics of the concept of human rights argue that it undermines indigenous cultures, especially in the underdeveloped world. I agree that the concept of human rights often undermines cultures. Culture rapture is often a necessary aspect of the entrenchment of respect for human rights. Culture is not of absolute ethical value; if certain aspects of particular cultures change because citizens prefer to focus on human rights, then that is a perfectly acceptable price to pay. Human rights are rights held by the individual, without regard to status or position, merely because she or he is human. In principle, all …

In early 1981, at the height of the Solidarity revolution, I was accepted by lREX to spend the spring 1982 semester in Warsaw for my project on the development of the workers' movement and the formation of Solidarity. My family and I were to fly to Poland just after Christmas of 1981. But on December 13, martial law was declared, and the Polish borders were sealed. I had taken a leave of absence from Butler University, and we had already rented out our house, so we were stranded.

引言

中国的经济体制改革已经进行了将近二十年。在这一过程中, 居民收入分配的格局发生了很大变化。

本章试图对收入分配格局的变化,特别上收入差距扩大的状况作一考察。由于收入分配涉及的面很广,本章拟集中考察收入分配变化的一些重要方面。

为了更好地考察改革以来收入分配的变化情况,还拟对改革以前中国居民收入分配的特点作一简要的回顾与分析, 以便对这种变化的起点和背景有一个基本的了解和判断。

中国的经济改革是同经济发展或增长紧密地联系在一起的,换言之, 中国从计划经济向市场经济转换的过程是同从二元经济向现代经济转换的过程交织在一起的。中国居民收入分配格局的变化是在这样两个转变的过程中实现的。因此, 本章还试图从经济发展、经济改革以及与此有关的政策因素中去分析收入差距变化的原因。

在本章的最后, 我们拟对今后如何改进收入分配提出一些具有政策含义的建议。 本章所引用的资料, 有一部分来自于中国社会科学院经济研究所收入分配课题组(以下简称经济所课题组) 对1988年和1995年城乡居民收入分配状况所作的抽样调查, 有一部分来自于国家统计局以及其他渠道。凡未注明出处者, 均来自于上述两次抽样调查。

Female Empowerment: The Influence Of Women Representing Women, Angela High-Pippert, John Comer

The concept of political empowerment has been applied to ethnic and racial minorities, where it has been shown to positively influence political attitudes and participation. We examine whether political empowerment has the same positive consequences for women. Using data from the 1992 National Election Study and Almanac for American Politics 1990, 1992, and 1994, we explore whether women who are represented by women in Congress are more likely to be interested in and participate in politics, have a greater sense of political efficacy, competence, and trust, and evaluate Congress as an institution more favorably than women represented by men.
