The Political Personality Of U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Aubrey Immelman

This paper presents the results of an indirect psychodiagnostic assessment of the political personality of U.S. vice president Al Gore, Democratic nominee in the 2000 presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon.

Information concerning Al Gore was collected from published biographical and autobiographical accounts and political reports in the print media, and synthesized into personality profiles using the second edition of the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM-IV.

We discuss two contexts of responsibility for action in Mount Hagen, confession and compensation. Verbal confessions of either wrongdoing or resentment against wrongdoing are important signs of the exercise of agency, but if they are not made, it is expected that sickness will result. “Substance” thus takes over where “agency” fails, and the two are intimately linked. Compensation payments can be seen as nonverbal equivalents of confession or the logical result of it, and if they are not paid, sickness or a failure of wounds to heal is thought to be likely as a result. The Louisiana survey consisted of two phases, a general survey of the public and an oversample of people who had used the court system within the past five years. This emphasis on the users of the courts (1307 were interviewed) is a unique aspect of the Louisiana study. Various types of court users, i.e., jurors, witnesses, civil litigants, defendants, etc., have significantly different evaluations of the court system. Predictably, people who have the most at stake in the outcome, such as victims, criminal defendants, and people in domestic disputes, are the most negative toward the courts.
