This is a study of the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The paper attempts to make a prediction of the ruling based on factors relevant to the Court's decision. I studied the facts of the case, the briefs submitted by petitioners and respondents, Supreme Court precedents, interpretive tests, amicus curiae briefs, and voting patterns of the Supreme Court Justices. Based on this information, I came to the conclusion that I believe the Court will issue a conservative ruling in favor of petitioners, Masterpiece Cakeshop.

This thesis is a reflection of my general interests in intra-partisan electoral conflict. Empirically, my study is motivated by Aaron King's (2017) theory about the relationship between announcement timing in U.S. Senate primary contests and experience in the arena of federal elections. I develop a measure that credits candidates with the highest score if they are an incumbent Senator, then three lower scores ranging from higher office to no experience. I then examine how this measure relates to the timing of candidacy announcements inside nine upcoming Republican primary contests for U.S. Senate nominations. This thesis has examined the impact of restricted abortion access on different indicators of child maltreatment. Drawing from literature linking unwanted pregnancies to child maltreatment, I posited that given the proposed relationship between unintended pregnancies and child maltreatment, we should expect to see increased instances of maltreatment within countries that allow less of forbid women from accessing abortions. For this purpose, I created an index of abortion access to numerically rate a country's level of liberality or restrictiveness. This study seeks to explain the dominance of French companies in the luxury fashion industry. The study aims to prove that France's unique model of capitalism contributed to the strong position of French luxury fashion. By using the theoretical framework of the varieties of capitalism the study analyses France's variety of capitalism, the evolution of the French luxury market, and ultimately compare how French luxury fashion firms fit the needs of the luxury fashion industry. This paper investigates the relationship between the Schengen area in Europe and terrorism. The Schengen agreement was implemented in 1995; since then, internal borders between the contracting parties have been abolished. This paper emphasizes the rationale that Schengen made member-states more vulnerable to terrorist attacks because the agreement inherently involved less regulation. In order to test this rationale, this study uses James Q. Wilson's choice theory. This theory refers to the school of thought which maintains that rational wrongdoers act as if they weigh the possible benefits of criminal or delinquent activity against the expected costs of being apprehended. This thesis sought to explore the effect of participation in party politics on terrorist organizations through a comparative case study of Hamas in the Palestinian Territories and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The project was inspired by the existing literature on party-terror linkages and inclusion-moderation theory. The methodology used to test this relationship required analysis of the histories of the two organizations to identify each organization's years of participation and non-participation in party politics. Given that significant U.S. federal tax reform is taking place for the first time in over 30 years, this paper examines how changing specific tax provisions may affect the average individual taxpayer as well as the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Three potential federal tax law changes are addressed: repealing the estate tax, reducing the corporate statutory income tax rate, and offering a repatriation holiday for remitting the foreign profits earned by U.S. businesses. Four congressional sessions took place during the eight years of the Obama administration; these were the 111th (2009-2011), 112th (2011-2013), 113th (2013-2015), and 114th (2015-2017). This research seeks to answer the question: Does level of nationalist sentiment expressed within a country affect the restrictiveness of the country’s intercountry adoption policy? Current literature has examined the influence of the level of nationalism expressed in a country on adoptive parents in choosing from which country to adopt; however, no study has examined the link between nationalism and country-specific intercountry adoption policy. This study evaluates the effectiveness of these two programs during the summer of 2016 by wealth surveys and individual quantitative interview of participants. In the interviews, women were asked about their experience in the program, revealing indications of empowerment. The levels of women's empowerment proved to be the more positive results. The women showed high levels of self-confidence, autonomy in decision making, positive partner relationship, challenging gender norms, and perceived empowerment. Perceived empowerment and confidence was a stronger indicator of the effectiveness of these programs.

Abstract: This paper seeks to address the essential question: what happened during the presidential election of 2016 and what does this mean for the American party system? Using qualitative and quantitative analysis, this research suggests that the 2016 election is evidence that domineering policy demanders, such as the Tea Party Movement and Occupy Wall Street, and domineering politicians, such as Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, used the democratized media to force a top-down realignment of the American party system. With GDP growth for the 2016 fiscal year reported at 6.7%, it appears that the Chinese economy has departed from the three-decade period in which GDP growth averaged plus-10%. While both academic journals and media outlets have accredited this slowdown to a variety of factors, existing research has failed to conflate the economic and political factors into a comprehensive explanation. Feminism in general exposes the fundamental folly of Western political theorists’ view of human nature, which is based on Western, decently well-off, white men’s experiences and privilege. This view of human nature, which is not human nature at all, but rather a socially constructed definition of what men’s human nature is, is replicated in neoclassical economics and perpetuated in mainstream Western International Relations theory. Understanding the social construction of norms exposes how what is conceived in conventional theory as human nature and state behavior is unnecessarily limiting. When is the institutionalization of anti-corruption bodies possible in Latin America? Central America’s Cold War era internal conflicts destabilized the Northern Triangle’s governments and greatly weakened judicial institutions. The legacy of these conflicts led to the creation of parallel corrupt networks that infiltrated state institutions and perpetuated impunity and violence. This thesis uses quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the relationship between water availability and civil conflict through an ethnic conflict lens. It further applies the trends observed in this relationship to United States National Security concerns to provide real-world applications of the knowledge gained. Through the examination of charitable contributions in the wake of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, this paper strives to comment on donation tendencies among individuals in Mainland China. The data analysis portion of this paper employs the use of both binary logistic and linear regression models to determine the effects of carefully discerned influential variables on an individual's donation decision and extent of donation respectively. Said variables were chosen by a combination of their frequency in preexisting research and speculative causal theory. Disproportionality In Discipline And Achievement: Disparities In Mississippi's Public Schools, Kathryn James

Using federally available data on exclusionary punishment and academic achievement, this thesis explores the relationships between disparities in punishment and in achievement. A case study using individual incident referrals supplements these datasets by providing a more nuanced view of student misbehavior, and student types receiving referrals, before punishment occurs. Disproportionalities in in-school suspension rates are positively and significantly related to gaps in academic achievement at the district level. African-American students and repeat offenders were referred at disproportionate rates for subjective offenses, while white students were referred for objective offenses. The purpose of this research is to conduct a qualitative study examining cases of abuse in the child welfare system and offer policy recommendations to limit cases of abuse. After chronicling several cases of child abuse within the State of Mississippi's foster care system the following recommendations are offered. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between terrorist activity and public support for gun control. This thesis tests three hypotheses: 1) that out-group violence causes greater support for gun control than in-group violence, 2) that the method of violence determines support for gun control, and 3) that the results of the first two hypotheses are dependent on the conditional variables of gender, fear of Muslims, and residence in an urban or rural area. The attitudinal model of the Supreme Court is now a well accepted and valid way to explain the voting behavior of justices, as judicial prefer- ences dictate the eventual voting that occurs in cases. While many studies have looked at overall judicial ideologies through a variety of different mea- sures, this paper is the first that looks at judicial ideology and determines preferences within a single doctrine through a question level analysis us- ing ideal point estimation.
