If we wish to know what the founding generation meant by liberty, consult the election sermons and thanksgiving sermons of the day. The founders knew that “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17). They sought to live together as a Christian people according to Christ’s “perfect law of liberty” (Jas. 1:25). That is, “the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Gal. 5:1). This is what is written between the lines of the Constitution. The Bible is the charter of our liberty. It is the substance of our constitutional liberties.

Evangelical social scientists have typically sought to breathe life into the old social gospel by professing to operate from a biblical basis while remaining dependent on a secular liberalism that had earlier jettisoned any signs of its clerical origins. But despite their concern with “structural injustice,” they have formulated their recommendations in terms of the same unjust and coercive social structures that rob Peter to pay Paul while picking the pockets of both.

We now see a growing willingness among Christian leaderships to articulate and practice their faith publicly according to a consciously biblical standard of government. Efforts to bring all areas of life into submission to God hearken back to the earliest and best of our political traditions, namely the public Christianity that shaped the American constitutional system. M.
