Bushido was originally a code of conduct for the samurai, the warrior class of feudal Japan. The term literally means "the way [do] of the warrior [bushi]." Basic principles of Bushido developed during and in the centuries of warfare before the Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333). The term came into normal usage during the stable Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867), when the samurai were subordinated tot he will of the state and the literary classic Hagakure (1716) was written.

Japanese army and naval-infantry forces relied on a standard assortment of small arms in World War II. These arms can be grouped into rifles and carbines, pistols, light machine guns, and submachine guns. Heavy machine guns, while not normally considered small arms, will also be covered under this topical heading, Japanese small arms ammunition could be identified, in many instances, by the following colored bands: pink (ball), black (armor-piercing), and green (tracer).

Two forms of infantry weapons–grenades and land mines–complemented the small arms used by Japanese army and naval landing forces in World War II. These forces employed numerous types of hand grenades, which generally ranged in weight to 10 to 20 ounces.

This article will build upon earlier battlespace research by discussing higher dimensional warfighting and its potential impact upon future operations. Further, it will cover linear and nonlinear projections of the future battlefield, highlight recent research concerning five-dimensional {cyber} battlespace, analyze concepts and technologies underlying bond-relationship targeting and cybershielding and explore warfighting implications of redefined battlespace.

This is a paper about theory in political economy terms and political economy in theoretical terms. It unifies power transition theory and applies it to the central questions that now confront political economists. Will trade wars emerge as the security challenge declines? Increasingly, national security scholars recognize that the world in which we were born is passing away and, with it, many of the premises, conventions and structures of modern civilization. Research suggests that the transition into the post-modern era will usher in scientific, economic, social, political and military changes of a magnitude never before experience in American history. Terrorist Laser Employment Against Civil Aviation: Issues, Concerns, And Potential Incidents, Robert J. Bunker

This article explores civil aviation vulnerability to terrorist laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) employment by focusing on the laser as a weapon against aircraft, laser classes and accessibility, past patterns of laser illumination and lasing of aircraft, recent lasing of aircraft in the Los Angeles area, and future possibilities. Most importantly, this article provides transit policing professionals with an "early warning" concerning a new threat to civil aviation which may have now developed.

Hundreds of documents and articles have been published about nonlethal weapons (NLW) since the 1960s. However, few books had been published on the subject. As NLW significance becomes more recognized for the operational advantages they provide in the Western urban and "failed-state" settings, more books are appearing. Malcolm Dando's book A New Form of Warfare: The Rise of Nonlethal Weapons and Nick Lewer and Steven Schofield's book Nonlethal Weapons: A Fatal Attraction? The purpose of this paper is to promote an understanding of and research into a new category of weapons, designated nonlethal by military services, and less than lethal or less lethal by law enforcement agencies. The intent is to create an initial term and reference listing to help support joint force and dual use initiatives focused on identifying the potential drawbacks of integrating nonlethal weapons into our military services and law enforcement agencies.
