THE YEAR 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the EDSA revolution that led to the downfall of the Marcos dictatorship and the restoration of democratic institutions under President Corazon C. Aquino. The celebration of “people power” is not just about those four extraordinary and triumphant days of non-violent uprising in February 1986. From a broader perspective, it is about a larger project and movement for democratization that goes further back than 1986 or even 1983, and in many ways remains an unfinished and continuing struggle at present. This essay explores the possibilities of igniting transformative political action among the youth through the creative exercise of giving meaning to their involvement. At a time when the youth are thought to have fallen to apathy, the author offers a way to effectively invite them to engagement. By showing them how their active citizenship is part of the broader action of building genuine democracy, the youth can truly become a force of hope for the country.

Betting On Democracy: Electoral Ritual In The Philippine Presidential Campaign, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

This article ofers an analysis of the ritual character of Philippine elections for national positions, particularly for the presidency. It is argued that the structuring of the electoral complex is akin to a ritual, specifically, a ritualized gamble or game of chance. The cultural figuration of elections is traced to long-term historical processes. The broad insights on Filipino political culture are supported as well as expanded by data collected by the lnstitute of Philippine Culture (PC), Ateneo de Manila University, from sixteen focus group discussions conducted nationwide before national elections were held on 10 May 2004.

While the current turmoil in global finance seems to support calls for
“transparency,” “accountability,” and “professionalization,” closer analysis reveals disjunctures in the dominant discourse on corporate governance, whose central element is the promotion of “investor confidence”
and “shareholder value.” This essay draws on the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu and Stuart Hall to examine how representations of the

The Global Governance Of “Good Governance”: Financial Regularization And The Construction Of Transparency And Accountability, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

“Good governance” has increasingly become political-economic common sense — often articulated in the call for transparency and accountability. But the question is: transparency and accountability to whom and toward what end? This essay examines the normalization of “good governance,” particularly as it is expressed as a financial discourse of corporate governance that gives primacy to the maximization of “shareholder value” and the promotion of “investor confidence” in the capital markets. I argue that this global discourse privileges institutional investors who are empowered to hold all stakeholders accountable to market expectations and valuations.
