Offense Perceived, Appropriate Actions And Possible Solutions: A Research Of Censorship, Sharon K. Van Poolen

Masters Theses

Students at Western Michigan University were asked via a survey to read lyrics and indicate an offensiveness rating. Lyrics containing vulgar or sexual language or derogatory statements about religion received higher offensive ratings. Actions deemed acceptable in response to offensive lyrics include picketing and boycotting. Prevalent themes identified in the lyrics are antagonism toward religion, sexism and unhealthy sexual relations. Groups cited most frequently as potentially harmed by lyrics are children 5-12, adolescents and women. Respondents were questioned about participation in certain activities and what alternatives to direct censorship are acceptable. Most would prefer to be involved indirectly, for example, …

Older Americans' Attitudes Toward The Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act Of 1988, Christine L. Day

Political Science Faculty Publications

Congress repealed the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988, which expanded Medicare benefits, after vigorous protests by groups of older people nationwide. Surveys show, however, that older Americans were deeply divided in their opinions. This study examines four explanations for divisions among the elderly on this issue: symbolic politics, socioeconomic status, distrust in government, and direct self-interest. The results of probit analysis indicate that high income, younger age (under 75), Republican partisanship, and distrust in government all contributed to older Americans' opposition to government catastrophic health care coverage. Effects Of Defendant Attractiveness On Juror Decision Making, Mary Lewis-Downey

In a review of 30 different studies the hypotheses was presented that a defendant’s attractiveness will be a determinant in jury decision making. Attractiveness is known to have positive and rewarding factors attributed to it, so it is natural to believe that people might react more positively towards someone who is attractive than someone who is unattractive. The main technique used in the studies to research this phenomenon was the jury simulation technique. While there were a few studies that had negative results, most of the studies reviewed found that the attractiveness of the defendant was a significant factor in …
