The Rise Of Urban Texas, Char Miller, David R. Johnson
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Texas contains three of the nation's ten largest cities, but their existence has not yet affected the hold that the state's rural heritage has on Texas' imagination--or so Texans' attachment to two nineteenth-century cultural landmarks, the Alamo and the Chisholm Trail, would suggest. As the shrine of Texas liberty, the Alamo continually generates elegies to the manly courage and bravery of the fallen heroes of 1836.

The "L-Word": A Short History Of Liberalism, Terence Ball, Richard Dagger

Hence the question: Are these good or bad times for liberalism? To answer, we shall need a broader perspective than a survey of contemporary developments can provide. We shall need to look back, that is, to see what liberalism was in order to understand what it has become. Only then can we assess its current condition and prospects-and appreciate how politics in the United States is largely an intramural debate between different wings of liberalism.

PAUL H. SCHMIDT uses today’s understanding of addictive behavior to understand Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and her self-destructive actions. Assistant Professor of English at Georgia State University, Schmidt has published articles on 19th-century literature and autobiography. He is working on a book dealing with Victorian autobiography and editing the Fall 1990 special issue of Studies in the Literary Imagination on autobiography.
Willa Cather’s landscapes in My Ántonia, observes SHELLEY SAPOSNIK-NOIRE, illuminates both plot and character and propels the action toward its conclusion. A student in the writing department of Columbia University, Saposnik-Noire has had a one-act …

The Search For An American Public Theology: The Contribution Of John Courtney Murray, Gerard V. Bradley

THE SEARCH FOR AN AMERICAN PUBLIC THEOLOGY: THE CONTRIBUTION OF JOHN COURTNEY MURRAY by Robert W. McElroy. New York: Paulist Press, 1989. Pp. iii+ 216. $10.95.
Among the many services Robert McElroy renders in this fine volume is an extensive bibliography of Murray's published writings. A glance at it suggests another service. Murray wrote countless articles, but no books. (His most famous work, We Hold These Truths, comprised previously published essays.) Precisely because Murray's thought is scattered across several decades and many journals, this intellectual biography - a narrative of Murray's life thought - is most valuable.

From the Review
In a widely reported address at Tulane University in October 1986, Attorney General Edwin Meese chastised the Supreme Court for its habitual conflation of constitutional law and the Constitution.
Meese is no intellectual, and his remarks were not intended as academic musings; thus, the speech may have been appropriately judged from a political perspective, condemned by liberals and applauded by conservatives for roughly the same reasons. Unfortunately obscured by the …

Party Politics During The Compromise Crisis: The Virginia Congressional Elections Of 1849 And 1851, Jodi Lee Bennett Koste
History Theses & Dissertations
The Second American Party System developed in Virginia from the factions contesting the presidency between 1824 and 1840. Following its formation, Virginia voters adopted party allegiances and regularly supported their party in the various local, state and national elections. These voting patterns began to change with the elections of the compromise crisis, the period between the presidential elections of 1848 and 1852, when the "politics of slavery" dominated every contest. Defense of the peculiar institution became paramount and party lines were disrupted as a result. Virginia's Whig congressional candidates, unable to present themselves as safe on the slavery question, were …

Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
(First paragraph) In recent years the study of military intelligence, particularly when viewed from a historical context, has acquired new significance. As military historians attempt to find a correlation between wartime events and the intelligence activities supporting those events, many serious works in this field have emerged. Some accounts of World War II military intelligence deal with the subject in terms of its benefits to the field commander. Others take a more extreme view and argue that major wartime successes resulted more from good intelligence than from good leadership.
