"This Yankee Is Different!" Dwight D. Eisenhower's Southern Strategy In The 1952 And 1956 Presidential Elections, Michael E. Karpyn
"This Yankee Is Different!" Dwight D. Eisenhower's Southern Strategy In The 1952 And 1956 Presidential Elections, Michael E. Karpyn
Student Publications
As the Republican presidential candidate in 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower was advised that campaign trips into the solid Democratic South were a waste of time and resources. In his re-election campaign of 1956, however, Eisenhower managed to win a majority of the electoral votes in this region. This success, in part, capitalized on the changing political and social structures within the South. In addition, the fracture of the Democratic party over the issue of civil rights and campaign difficulties of Eisenhower's opponent in both elections, Adlai Stevenson of Illinois, also contributed to the Republican gains in the South, leading to …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
STEVEN VINCENT describes his attempt to come to terms with what he has seen in the killing fields of Cambodia, monuments to the Khmer Rouge's systematic destruction of Cambodians who had known or imagined life other than the rural peasant ideal their bloody torturers and murderers envisioned, even if this means not coming to terms with it at all but to accept its unacceptability, not to rationalize the irrational. Currently the senior writer for Art & Auction magazine where he writes about the international art world, and specifically the art market, he also contributes regularly to the Antique Collector, an …

James Wilson, A Man For All Seasons (Chapter 7 Of The Political And Legal Philosophy Of James Wilson 1742-1798), Mark David Hall
James Wilson, A Man For All Seasons (Chapter 7 Of The Political And Legal Philosophy Of James Wilson 1742-1798), Mark David Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
Excerpt: "This work began with the claim that James Wilson was one of the most important, yet one of the most frequently overlooked, founders. It has attempted to demonstrate that he merits examination because of his significant role in the founding period. Wilson's contributions as a member of Congress, constitution maker, law professor, and Supreme Court justice should not be overlooked. But his political significance does not necessarily mean that his political theory is worthy of attention."
Women In The West Virginia State Legislature 1923-1997, Jo Boggess Phillips
Women In The West Virginia State Legislature 1923-1997, Jo Boggess Phillips
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A total of 125 women legislators have served in the West Virginia State Legislature (see Appendix A). Although every state legislator, both male and female, has played a role in molding the destinies of the citizens of this state, the past 70 years have been an uphill climb for the women who have served in the West Virginia Legislature.
This thesis examines the careers of some of the pioneering women who broke the gender barrier and entered into the male dominated world of state politics and those who have followed their lead. This paper is by no means meant to …
The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Germany's Pursuit Of Power In The Twentieth Century, Joshua Hayes
The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Germany's Pursuit Of Power In The Twentieth Century, Joshua Hayes
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Germany faces a "German Problem" because of history and ideology. Branded an aggressor nation because of its role in the two World Wars, Germany is still attempting to succeed in a competitive, anarchic world similar to that described by Hobbes' State of Nature. I illustrate this international environment through game theory's Prisoner's Dilemma. Viewed in this manner, Germany feared defection by neighboring states and its actions to protect itself helped cause the First World War. Contemporary Germany has learned from its past experiences and has a new anti-aggression stance which competes with an old Faustian German ethos. I shall argue …

Las Maquiladoras Y Su Gente: A Look At The United States-Mexico's Industrial Past, Present, And Future, Stamate P. Skliris
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
My Senior Honors Thesis entails a close look at the U.S.- owned sweat shops which reside along the 2,000 mile border between the U.S. and Mexico. In my thesis, I discuss the positive and negative attributes of the Maquiladora Industry, in addition to their history, and a prognostication of what lies ahead for their future.
The Fall Of Sendero Luminoso, Anthony T. Daniel
The Fall Of Sendero Luminoso, Anthony T. Daniel
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
The Fall of Sendero Luminoso evaluates the rise and decline of the Shining Path movement, or Sendero Luminoso, in Peru. The social insurrection began in 1980 and seeks to establish a communist state in Peru through the use of guerrilla warfare. The 1992 capture of Sendero's leader, Abimael Guzman, significantly weakened the organization and its influence in Peruvian society has diminished. My thesis attempts to postulate the reasons for the collapse of the organization with a particular focus on how the practices and policies of Sendero inhibited the revolution from establishing a deep social foundation. I argue that Sendero's use …
Beyond The Gender Gap: Women Of Color In The 1996 Election, Carol Hardy-Fanta
Beyond The Gender Gap: Women Of Color In The 1996 Election, Carol Hardy-Fanta
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
National and State exit polls provide a wealth of information on the public opinions of women of color, beyond the choice of candidate and standard research questions of partisanship and ideology. Policy issues and ballot questions provide a window into the positions of voters who are women of color. (Many more than those analyzed for this paper are available in the exit poll datasets.) One of the major conclusions of this study must be to expand the political agenda of women and communities of color and insist on more representative polling with larger minority samples (especially for Asian Americans). Nevertheless, …
Law And Religion In Israel And Iran: How The Integration Of Secular And Spiritual Laws Affects Human Rights And The Potential For Violence, S. I. Strong
Faculty Articles
Because law and religion are by themselves complex cultural and historical issues, any study of the interaction between the two will be at least as complicated. If one is to understand both a State's current religio-legal regime and what reform measures are most likely to succeed there, it is necessary to understand at least a little of the nation's history and majority religion. Therefore, Part I of this article provides a brief sketch of the principles of the two majority religions at issue in this discussion and an overview of the history of both Israel and Iran. It explains why …

A Segregationist On The Civil Rights Commission, James R. Sweeney
A Segregationist On The Civil Rights Commission, James R. Sweeney
History Faculty Publications
In 1957 President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed to the newly created Commission on Civil Rights John Stewart Battle, a former longtime Virginia General Assembly member and governor who was also a staunch segregationist. Eisenhower appointed him to represent white Southern opinion and because of his national reputation for deft political conciliation. The article reviews Battle's personal background, political career, racial philosophy, and interactions with other figures prominent in the era's civil rights politics, including Father Theodore Martin Hesburgh, Harry F. Byrd, Sr., and J. Lindsay Almond, Jr. During his service on the commission during 1957-59, Battle's segregationist views kept him …
Political Formation Of Korean Americans In Los Angeles: Visions Of Political Power, 1992-1996, Edward J.W. Park
Political Formation Of Korean Americans In Los Angeles: Visions Of Political Power, 1992-1996, Edward J.W. Park
Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works
Since the Los Angeles Civil Unrest of 1992, Korean Americans have taken their first steps toward mainstream political participation and inclusion. From its initial stages, their struggle for political empowerment has been marked by profound partisan divisions. These divisions implicate a range of issues and point to pivotal concerns that organize and divide the political formation of the Korean American community. As the Korean American community is being transformed by its political engagement, mainstream politics in Los Angeles is also undergoing change as it confronts the new issues and complexities Korean Americans have brought to the city's political agenda.
