Physician Representation In The National Government: The Washington Office Of The A.M.A., Maria Cherner Jan 1957

Physician Representation In The National Government: The Washington Office Of The A.M.A., Maria Cherner

Student Scholarship

This report provides a descriptive study of physician representation within the national government, specifically focusing on the structure and history of the American Medical Association Washington Office. The American Medical Association was established in 1847 to elevate medical education standards and promote the interests of the medical profession. Despite its long history, the Association did not establish a formal Washington office until 1944. This development was spurred by a growing need to inform physicians of pending legislation and to bring professional medical opinions to the nation's capital. The office initially operated with a minimal staff under its first director, Dr. …

A Study Of The National Education Association In Its Efforts To Support Legislation, Nancy Sue Hulse Jan 1957

A Study Of The National Education Association In Its Efforts To Support Legislation, Nancy Sue Hulse

Student Scholarship

This research paper examines the role and effectiveness of the National Education Association as a lobbying organization within the United States governmental process. The author begins by contextualizing the history and definition of lobbying, noting that while the practice is as old as legislation itself, it remains a controversial yet essential supplement to the formal mechanisms of government. The study highlights both the beneficial aspects of lobbying, such as providing legislators with expert data, and the potential for abuse when powerful minorities subordinate the general welfare.

The core of the paper focuses on the structure and methods of the National …

US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations

Published as a bundle of anthropological works sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, paper number 51 is an analysis of 25 pottery specimens from the Upper-Missouri area. These specimens are attributed to the Lewis and Clark expedition, to army personnel, and to other travelers. The origin of the pottery is uncertain, though there are indications that some pieces may have originated from Fort Berthold, Fort Buford, and Fort Stevenson. The paper offers background on pottery making in the Upper-Missouri, noting that the Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa tribes made paddle-and-anvil pottery rather than coil pottery. A Survey Of Bond Campaign Procedures Followed By A Selected Number Of California School Districts, John William Adamson Jan 1957

A Survey Of Bond Campaign Procedures Followed By A Selected Number Of California School Districts, John William Adamson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

California Schools have experienced an unprecedented growth during the past several years. Enrollments in many school districts within the state have more than doubled since the end of World War II.

It took California ninety years to enroll its first million children in school in 1940. It took only thirteen years to enroll the second million in 1953. It will take only an estimated five years to enroll the third million by 1958.1 Practically every California school system, therefore, is faced with the continuing problem of providing more classrooms to house these new pupils. To provide funds for additional …

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon Jan 1957

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Californians, in 1933 and 1934, were psychologically ready to act against prevailing social and economic conditions. Existing economic dislocations could not continue for long without peril. It was not clear whether the revolt would be toward fascism or extreme radicalism. There was at all events a growing popular reaction against those who had political and economic control of the State, and this was especially noticeable in the southern part of the State.

Greenwood informs Burdick that the Three Affiliated Tribes Tribal Council has reconsidered the enrollment of several applicants and that has delayed approval of the final tribal roll. Greenwood notes that since this distribution of funds will effectively comprise the last of the funds held in trust for the Three Affiliated Tribes, it's imperative that the rolls …
