Queering Latinidad: Latinx Politics Beyond Nativity, Melina Juarez

Political Science ETDs

Much debate surrounds the emergence of the term "Latinx." While some have argued against its usage, others have deeply embraced it as a way of representing the gender diversity found within the Latina/o community. Yet, these arguments do not transcend the boundaries of gender to include other facets of identity subverted within the concept of Latinidad. This project seeks to extend the boundaries of Latinx to include other areas of identity that are inherent parts of being a Latino in the United States, including sexuality, African roots, indigeneity, among others. This dissertation seeks to understand whether our rigid conceptualization of …

What Are The Three Characteristics Of Trumpism?: A Discourse Analysis Of Trump’S Four Major Campaign Speeches, Rachel D. Beeman

Political Analysis

Rachel's goal in this paper is to advance a moderate voice on a controversial presidency. She uses text analysis techniques and a program outside her comfort zone called ATLAS.ti, with the help of her faculty mentor Dr. Roseanne Mirabella, to analyze four campaign speeches by President Trump. She hopes future research will take advantage of text analysis to explore how rhetorical patterns and cues might provide insight into the characteristics of leaders and elected officials.

Predicting How U.S. Counties Will Vote In Presidential Elections Through Analysis Of Socio-Economic Factors, Voting Heuristics, And Party Platforms, Joseph Stoffa, Randall Lisbona, Christopher Farrar, Mike Martos

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, it is proposed that voters, devoid of any pressing concerns that could be addressed at the federal level, will tend to vote by their ideology for their preferred party. However, given pressing concerns, they will vote for whichever party can address these concerns despite party affiliation. This hypothesis is extended to the county level by assuming counties can be defined as the aggregate of their voting residence and as such their behavior can be predicted by considering their past voting history, socioeconomic makeup, and party platform.

Congressional Redistricting: Keeping Communities Together?, Kalyn M. Rossiter, David W. S. Wong, Paul L. Delamater

Geography Faculty Scholarship

The process of congressional redistricting, delineating boundaries for districts in which voters elect members to the U.S. House of Representatives, has always been an expensive and controversial process. Congressional districts (CDs) are redrawn due to changes in population reflected by the decennial census to ensure equal representation. Laws and regulations literature identifies eight criteria that may be considered when determining the boundaries of CDs and this article focuses on one of those criteria, maintaining communities of interest (COIs). This criterion requires states to preserve these boundaries when delineating CDs but fails to define a COI. This research proposes and evaluates …

Party Identification At Western Michigan University, Melissa Heinz Apr 2018

Party Identification At Western Michigan University, Melissa Heinz

Honors Theses

A high self-monitor is an individual who changes his/her political views to improve an impression made to others. This past election contained very controversial candidates making individuals very reluctant to show strong support for either party. My thesis topic examines the link between self-monitoring and party identification after the controversial election. I will be testing to see Western Michigan University students’ willingness to disguise political views based on what others think of them by using three different versions of the same survey. Many students are in positions on campus as well as off campus that require them to present themselves …

From Democrats To "Deplorables": The Trumpization Of The Republican Party, Lily Talerman Apr 2018

From Democrats To "Deplorables": The Trumpization Of The Republican Party, Lily Talerman

Politics Honors Papers

This thesis explores the transformation of the Republican electoral coalition from the party of Abraham Lincoln to the party of Donald Trump. By comparing the Trump coalition—which Hillary Clinton said was half full of “deplorables”—with previous Democratic and Republican presidential coalitions, the drastic change in the electoral habits of Southerners and white working-class voters is made evident. Trump’s appeal to these voters is due not only to his populist rhetoric but also to the presidential campaigns of Republican candidates Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, as well as to George Wallace’s independent and Democratic presidential campaigns. Trump’s unforeseen victory …
